Thread 25 - Covid Cohort - Christmas Trees, No Omicron Please!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 12/12/2021 17:15

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided, for anyone interested, they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Yes crazy, ABB should be very achievable, especially if exams go ahead. Fingers crossed.

Zebracat · 21/12/2021 13:47

@BlueMarigold. The offer was ABB or BBB if firmed. She will want to go to offer holder days before deciding. Only 2 offers at the moment.

ExquisitelyDecorated · 21/12/2021 13:49

My two don't really do parties either, like when they were younger they still sometimes go bowling / go-karting or similar in a small group but not actual parties.

Great to hear of more offers coming in Smile.

Piggyinblankets · 21/12/2021 13:58

@crazycrofter

Grin I can imagine my DD’s reaction if I suggested celebrating her 18th with the grandparents (much as she loves them!)

I know, I was surprised about the hotel too. Mind you, they all seem to have fake ID at this age anyway so they can go clubbing. Dd won’t on principle, but she has felt she’s missing out a bit this term as there’s been fewer gatherings/parties and more clubbing nights. On the plus side she’s been having weekly sleepovers with her best friend to watch through all the Marvel films and they’ve only got 4 left now!

Ours live 3 hours away... they didn't add much to the 'occasion' tbh!
Alsoplayspiccolo · 21/12/2021 14:01

Yay, singing! And what a fabulous first offer to get!

DD has just had her first offer too - BCC from Reading , reduced from BBB because of her ADHD.
Not as exciting as Exeter, but she’s happy to have one in the bag, and it’s the only one that offers English, film and theatre.

Wheresthebeach · 21/12/2021 14:09

Yeah for singing and also - lovely news.

DD isn't into parties either. Very much a movie and sleepover kid. Went out to dinner with 9 friends recently which was lovely. The noise and drunkenness just puts her off large events.

crazycrofter · 21/12/2021 14:16

Dd is into parties AND movies/sleepovers! She's just into socialising of any kind, whether with one friend or hundreds....

Brilliant @Alsoplayspiccolo! I will bear that in mind when ds is in this position in 2 years, as I've looked at the unis dd was applying to and they don't seem to do contextuals for ADHD. Will that be her insurance offer?

Zebracat · 21/12/2021 14:20

Well done to baby piccolo That’s a great offer. Ours had a very sedate celebration for her 18th, with 2 friends for tea, and a family dinner in her favourite restaurant at the weekend. She keeps moaning about how pathetic it was now, but it was, more or less what she wanted, altho slightly affected by one of those incomprehensible fall outs in the friendship group, which reduced the tea party from 4 to 2. She’s scared of clubbing and of alcohol, altho she is beginning to have a glass of fizz if offered. Any mention of bars puts her off universities. It is a bit of a worry.

ealingwestmum · 21/12/2021 14:20

Delphigirl another joining yours on the McGill application. That’s a Plan B option and subject to so many other variables, including getting an offer from them!

estherfrewen · 21/12/2021 14:22

Not been about much recently but great to see so many offers so close to Xmas! DS has had Lancaster offer reduced to BBC due to access programme thing so very happy.

DS never been to proper party. Likes cinema and sleepovers but is not a sociable person! He just isn’t interested yet. Probably change when at Uni. 18th is in January and will be the three of us going for a meal or perhaps the three of us and an escape room. Basically the three of us!!

ealingwestmum · 21/12/2021 14:27

That’s great Piccolo, good to get that first once in.

ealingwestmum · 21/12/2021 14:28

Has your DH made it back from Dubai ok?

Alsoplayspiccolo · 21/12/2021 14:57

Thanks, ealing, yes, he arrived back last night - timed to absolute perfection, as the company coach dropped them where DS was performing in a concert, and they arrived just before it finished, so we all went home together Smile
Not so great is the news that 3 of his flight party felt ill last night and have tested positive. DH is waiting for the results of the PCR they all took on arrival at Heathrow, but today’s LFT was negative so fingers crossed.

crazy, it’s the only one of her 5 that offer contextual for disabilities, but she didn’t know that when she applied. It was her safety choice but she’s not sure whether it will be her insurance until she’s visited.

Delphigirl · 21/12/2021 16:10

Hey Ealing join the Canadian contingent! (It’s just us at the moment 😁).
So DS had his interview for Southampton which went really well - he was made the standard offer (ABB) on the spot but was told that because he had interview so well and his specific LDs they would take him even if he dropped 2 grades. So he is really pleased and it has been great for his confidence too. I’m delighted for him!
Just waiting for Dalhousie but I guess that will be after Xmas now. I’m finally on holiday so have been wrapping and sorting all day!

Delphigirl · 21/12/2021 16:11

Oh @Alsoplayspiccolo, fingers crossed your DS doesn’t get it… mind you it is so prevalent and transmissible now I expect we will all get it in the next few weeks. But I will keep my fingers crossed for him!

singingstones · 21/12/2021 16:27

Great news Also! Especially as it's the one with that unique combination of subjects. We might have been a bit slow out of the blocks but catching up now!

crazycrofter · 21/12/2021 16:29

DD’s also just had her grade 6 singing result - a merit. I haven’t told her yet as she’s working!

Nard75 · 21/12/2021 16:37

Well done to everyone getting the offers it is great to get them in the bag before Christmas.
@crazycrofter congratulations to DD on the singing exam.

ealingwestmum · 21/12/2021 16:42

Lovely news for her Crazy when she’s finished work!

ExquisitelyDecorated · 21/12/2021 16:51

Great news on the offer @Alsoplayspiccolo, Reading seem to be good on the contextual offers, I spoke to them at the Open Day and they had a big list of criteria and said "whatever it is you get an offer two grades lower. Fingers crossed for negative for DH, it is all very nerve-wracking at the moment.

Well done to DD @crazycrofter.

DS has had a second offer, from the Royal Agricultural Uni, 56 points (it's a foundation degree). That's his two favourites quickest off the mark.

crazycrofter · 21/12/2021 16:54

That must be lovely @ExquisitelyDecorated to have his favourites already. I wonder if today is the last day for sending out offers at most places? Or maybe tomorrow actually - the university I work for is closed from Thursday until the New Year.

ealingwestmum · 21/12/2021 16:59

👏👏 ED!

ZittiEBuoni · 21/12/2021 17:12

Great to hear about all these offers for Christmas - well done to all, and congrats to crazycrofter's dd on her singing result.

My brother lives near Cirencester, ExquisitelyDecorated, it's such a gorgeous part of the country. We're supposed to be visiting next week but who knows...

Ooh great news! They are good on the Student Support side at Southampton they do research in it too which Insee as a good sign.
