Thread 25 - Covid Cohort - Christmas Trees, No Omicron Please!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 12/12/2021 17:15

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided, for anyone interested, they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Congratulations, can't keep up with all these offers!

How exciting @whoamitojudge, will she have a zero hours contract or contracted hours? I am wondering how many short haul flights there will be in Jan, things can only get better for her after a potential lock down start!

singingstones · 20/12/2021 21:51

She’s nearly finished, got her last big exam on Wednesday so if all goes well her first flight will be on 4th Jan[/quote]
Wow that's amazing - you must be so proud of her, she has obviously "flown" through her training!
Good luck for the last exam on Weds and for starting her career Smile

icanbewhatiwant · 20/12/2021 22:17

Congrats on all the offers. I can't keep up with them all. Ds has only had the Sussex offer so far. But as that's the only one he wants, he's happy. But would be great to have more.

We've just booked our summer holiday next august, near St Austell (just 3 of us, I'm assuming ds1 and ds2 aren't coming) I wonder what the covid situation will be like by then. Seems weird that by then, hopefully ds2 will be preparing for university and ds1 will have moved back home from university after finishing his degree.

crazycrofter · 20/12/2021 22:26

After saying she was wondering when it was coming, dd got an offer from Nottingham earlier! She’s currently at a big 18th birthday party at a hotel in the city centre - what are the chances she picks up covid? Hmm

Well done on all the offers received and to your dd @whoamitojudge

Zebracat · 20/12/2021 22:58

We got an offer too, from Birmingham for Anthropology and History.

BlueMarigold · 21/12/2021 06:31

Congratulations @Zebracat!

Is Birmingham the top choice? DDs offer was AAA but AAB if firmed.

Volterra · 21/12/2021 08:17

Congratulations on all the offers !!! Fingers crossed that chances are low Crazycrofter. Another of DD’s housemates has had a positive lateral flow so that’s 4 of them now from their group of friends , 2 in DD’s house, One of their friend’s had unfortunately chosen last weekend to visit, his Mum has cancer. Really hope he doesn’t get it,

20newnames · 21/12/2021 09:17

Been away from the thread for a few days and it’s moved quickly.

Congrats on all the latest offers!

Piggyinblankets · 21/12/2021 10:01

So many offers!

Weld done all.

No new news form us. Still waiting for Bath.

Booked theory test yesterday.

ChristopherTracy · 21/12/2021 10:01

Yay - well done all!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 21/12/2021 10:09

Some fabulous offers coming in!
whoamitojudge, it’s so lovely to hear how brilliantly your DD is doing - definitely living her best life!

No uni news here, much to DD’s frustration. However, DH made it back from Dubai safe and sound last night, so we’re happy Smile

DoggerelBank · 21/12/2021 10:10

So much good news! Congratulations, everyone. May you all have a fun-filled and Covid-free next few days and weeks.

crazycrofter · 21/12/2021 10:23

@Piggyinblankets

So many offers!

Weld done all.

No new news form us. Still waiting for Bath.

Booked theory test yesterday.

Waiting for Bath here too!

Has your ds added his final two choices yet?

Piggyinblankets · 21/12/2021 10:24

Yes, Bath was one of them. And Sheffield who have sent an offer.

I knew Bath might be quite late so just tapping feet (im)patiently.

Meanwhile , offer holder days booked at York and Birmingham. Anyone heard of any at Sheffield?

BlueMarigold · 21/12/2021 10:35

@Piggyinblankets how did you book the offer holder day at Birmingham? Did they send a link?

Seeline · 21/12/2021 10:42

Congratulations on the many offers! Fab news.

DS got his uni coursework uploaded yesterday with 20 minutes to spare 🙄 My blood pressure is gradually coming down. However, still having to do most things one handed so Christmas preparations are definitely well behind schedule.

Piggyinblankets · 21/12/2021 10:44

DS got an email, yes.

NCTDN · 21/12/2021 11:29

For those of you whose chills head already turned 18, what did they do to celebrate? DD has a lot of friends not yet 18. They went to a party in a wine bar the other day but got kicked out at 8.30 because they were 17. She doesn't know what to do for hers next month.
I'm really bothered that another lockdown might screw all plans up anyway. I'm dreading it Sadbecause of the detrimental effect on her mental health.

NCTDN · 21/12/2021 11:29

Chills head? HmmConfusedMeant children...

singingstones · 21/12/2021 12:38

DS has his first offer Xmas Grin
Exeter ABB which can include Welsh Bacc

ealingwestmum · 21/12/2021 12:55

Yay singingstones, great first offer in the bag!

ealingwestmum · 21/12/2021 13:00

NCTDN, it is a challenge, limited public venue opportunities unless you opt for zero alcohol, most do not want to risk their licence.

DD had a home party in Sept, circa 45. DH was in charge of the 'bar', which was basically beers and cocktails, that were progressively diluted down as the party went on (big 7 litre tap jars), and the star of the show....karaoke. And delivery pizzas. It worked well, was intimate given size of our house, but I didn't have to clear up any vom, and a good time seemed to be had by all.

crazycrofter · 21/12/2021 13:03

That's brilliant @singingstones and not too high either?

Dd was confused by her Nottingham offer as it mentioned AAB and ABB. I haven't had the chance to look at it as she was at a party last night, she's now out with a friend doing some Christmas shopping and she's working at Sainsbury's 4-11. I wonder if it's ABB if firmed and AAB if an insurance?

@NCTDN dd isn't 18 till June but she's been to lots of 18th parties. Last night's was at a hotel, there was food and an open bar. Apparently her friend's dad just told the venue they were all over 18?!

Piggywaspushed · 21/12/2021 13:10

I'm surprised a hotel did that tbh. They could lose their licence. Most hotels do a wristband thing.

When DS was 18 we had grandparents up and a glass of fizz. No one has 18ths round here! Or at least not boys in either DSs friendship groups...

crazycrofter · 21/12/2021 13:15

Grin I can imagine my DD’s reaction if I suggested celebrating her 18th with the grandparents (much as she loves them!)

I know, I was surprised about the hotel too. Mind you, they all seem to have fake ID at this age anyway so they can go clubbing. Dd won’t on principle, but she has felt she’s missing out a bit this term as there’s been fewer gatherings/parties and more clubbing nights. On the plus side she’s been having weekly sleepovers with her best friend to watch through all the Marvel films and they’ve only got 4 left now!
