Thread 25 - Covid Cohort - Christmas Trees, No Omicron Please!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 12/12/2021 17:15

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided, for anyone interested, they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

I don't have allergies, skin, hair or nail problems. I hope my breath and body don't smell either. My concentration and memory worry me. I lose everything. I've been known to hide things and can't find them. I took ds2's iPod away once (going back a few years) it was missing for 3 months. I found it by accident and when I found it I could clearly remember hiding it there. But I couldn't before I found it. I can also get to the top of the road in the car and have absolutely no idea where I'm going. I have to think carefully before I decide which way to turn. I also find some of things that dh does really, really irritating. In fact lots of things irritate me that would never have bothered me a few years ago.

NCTDN · 17/12/2021 20:48

@ExquisitelyDecorated

I've got most of them too. I never realised about the tinnitus either. My hair and nails are still OK though. Bit worried about no 18 with the amount of coughing I've got going on ATM Blush
Yep I'm coughing too a lot and I understand the issue with no 18!
Fiddlersgreen · 17/12/2021 20:48

I have 20 out of 40 of those symptoms and I’m 37! Hmm

Seeline · 17/12/2021 22:24

I have all bar about 5! I didn't know about tinnitus or the burning mouth/tongue, so that's two more. I had the impending doom thing about 3 years ago, but that changed into anxiety. I'm 53. I keep wondering about hrt but never get round to it.

DS announced that one of his uni housemates tested positive yesterday, the day after DS came home, so he's testing daily now. Apparently he hadn't seen much of the lad for the three days before he came home so , fingers crossed.

Wheresthebeach · 17/12/2021 22:40

@Heifer OMG the tinnitus is menopause.??? Like the others it easier to say what I’m not suffering from…

ExquisitelyDecorated · 17/12/2021 22:52

I have recently started using the Balance app to record meno symptoms, it has a wealth of useful info and you can make a diary to show your GP.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 17/12/2021 23:47

@Alsoplayspiccolo fantastic news for you all!

@ExquisitelyDecorated - that is a great idea. I found that I kept forgetting what symptoms I had. I have no idea how true that list is by the way - It was posted on a group I'm on (I say on, my friend added me after discussion but I don't often read anything). I really should go and see the Dr but apart from the meh feeling I get, I don't think anything is serious enough to make be bother to go - there you go, 1 of my main symptoms is not being bothered enough about anything!

So 3 offers out of 5 for DD so far. I'm guessing that's it now until January? Booked on a offer holders open day in February - same time as @BlueMarigold apparently - do you think we should have a secret signal or code so we know who we are? I don't think DD would be too impressed if I went up to everyone and mentioned naice ham, soupy the bat or shopping lists! God you can tell I don't venture outside of here anymore I don't know anything Mumsnetty... I've just searched and found I first posted in 2006 and often frequented Behavour/development, parents & style and beauty (that shocked me). I also spent a lot of time in The Bar and made some friends in there that I am still in contact with on FaceBook and have even meet 3 in real life!

Good luck with keeping Covid free and those that family members have it - hope they are ok.

I've got a weekend of cleaning/tidying and preparing for a dinner party for 10 for DDs 18th on Monday. I need to cater for vegans, vegetarians, Halal, fussy eaters too. I have decided to go tapas style so basically cooking LOTS of different dishes in the hope that everyone likes something. DH and DD have promised to help to. DH does a great paella.

I'm actually looking forward to it as not had a dinner party for years. If only I didn't have to spend most of tomorrow getting the house in some kind of order (main symptom of my PM is can't be arsed/don't care it's a tip) but I do care that DD will care so I will need to crack on.

I am really looking forward to planning what they are eating after cleaning - I haven't let myself plan that too much as it's the part I love so am making myself do it after cleaning as a reward.

I did manageto find a few on the list I don’t have, HRT was a disaster for me and I think triggered the swelling and pain in my joints which is ironic as I tried it to help with that. Hate the vertigo, hadn’t realised that could be part of it.

I’ve been here since pregnant with DS, time flies! Some people on DD’s course have gone down with covid after clubbing on Monday, she saw them briefly on Tuesday. She’s due back tomorrow and been testing, fingers crossed. .

ExquisitelyDecorated · 18/12/2021 07:23

I've been here since 2009, so missed the baby stage (I was on BabyCentre). I have made a few RL friendships through MN over the years, there's one thread I've been on the whole time I've been on MN. I'm involved with the Woolly Hugs projects as well so chat with them. I've had lots of different names though.

Still coughing this morning, think I'll be mostly staying at home the next few days.

ealingwestmum · 18/12/2021 08:40

I keep wondering about HRT but never got round to it

That’s me too Seeline, same age, 3 years now post M. The lack of sleep and 24 hour hot flashes are what’s doing me in the most. Every time I think I’ll make a GP appt, we have another covid surge, and I think they’ve got better things to dealing with.

Wishing all of you with party planning, returning DC etc a virus-free run. DD’s been diligently holed up in her room, low and tired but otherwise not too bad.

Wheresthebeach · 18/12/2021 09:20

Hope everyone stays well over the holidays. DSS and DSD have covid but very mild, thankfully. Both have other health issues, especially DSD who has lung issues so we were very worried.

Did someone say there were offer holder days for Southampton available? I thought I read it, but I've asked DD to check and she can't see anything...

Both DD and I are asthmatic so we're being careful right now, even a cold hits us harder than most so if we can keep DD covid free (esp as mocks in Jan) that would be great.

Decorhate · 18/12/2021 09:40

@Wheresthebeach Ds2 had some marketing stuff in the post from Southampton yesterday. I just glanced at it but think there was a section on offer holder days. They definitely ran them when ds1 was applying 3 years ago as we went along. They did a very nice buffet! Things may be different now of course.

Delphigirl · 18/12/2021 09:40

Hi everyone! I’ve also been here since pregnant with DS2 in 2003 (was one of the old guard) but when the whole fungals thing exploded I had a good few years off and then slowly started rengaging incognito. Ho hum. Seems like a million years ago!
DS got an ABB offer from S’hampton for Env. Geoscience and has arranged his S’hampton Oceanography interview for next week. The offer didn’t mention an offer holders day @Wheresthebeach.
So only response we are waiting for is from Canada…

crazycrofter · 18/12/2021 10:23

@Wheresthebeach dd had an email from Southampton about offer holders days - the email title suggested it was just about virtual ones but when she clicked to book there were in person ones available too. She’s booked for mid Feb.

BlueMarigold · 18/12/2021 10:34

I am a newbie compared to most of you. I joined Mumsnet to see messages but didn’t really participate until joining this thread when waiting for GCSE results.

Wheresthebeach · 18/12/2021 10:34

Congratv@Delphigirl! Thanks @crazycrofter we’ll look at the emails. @Decorhate hopefully we’ll get the same - no post yet

Monkey2001 · 18/12/2021 10:42

@Heifer love the sound of the dinner party. Also love to hear that I am not the only person who has let the house turn into a tip in recent years! We were always a bit untidy and I was nervous about joining a school babysitting circle but was VERY happy when I babysat for someone with a house even messier than mine!

Have you worked out how to label your dishes on Monday? Flags for type or coloured serviettes or full disclosure of ingredients?!

Oblomov21 · 18/12/2021 11:39

I'm feeling covid fed up today. I was supposed to be going to out friends for cocktails and tart. My mum phoned last night to say they've decided it was best to not come for lunch over the Christmas period. Which she wouldn't be able to do anyway if the 2 week covid breaker rules whispers are actually announced tomorrow, which Dh thinks is too little, too late. And he thinks it won't be just 2 weeks, once it starts they'll have to keep it going. I fear schools won't open in Jan, I think it'll be on line.

How miserable.

BlueMarigold · 18/12/2021 11:52

What two week covid breaker rules? 😓

ZittiEBuoni · 18/12/2021 11:55

I don't even want to think about it.

Going ice-skating today, cinema tomorrow, lalala can't hear you.

EwwSprouts · 18/12/2021 12:01

Talking to a teacher last night & they had official guidance to take stuff home at the end of term, first time they've had advance warning...

We were out last night with friends and DS went to the 6th form winter social. Given DS has been with all the same people in school this week and DH and I are both working at our places of work it didn't seem like an increased risk. What was really interesting was where we went was full (about 400 people) and we were in the youngest 10%. On that basis I'm not sure any lockdown will stick. We live in a conservative and Conservative area.

I'm just post a fairly late menopause. No anxiety but like @Kingscote running out of patience with fools!

Piggyinblankets · 18/12/2021 12:06

We didn't... mind you , my school is very much fingers in ears. But there has definitely not been any official guidance from anywhere.

Not sure whether we will go and see DH's mum on Tuesday We usually meet in the Cotswolds in a pub but she's not keen and suggested a Starbucks. Ermmmm.... no Covid in Starbucks??
Her DH has leukaemia so probably best to stay away from people but they are quite easily offended.

Meanwhile, my spleenless DF is in bed with 'the worst cold he has ever had' (he has lots of 'worst colds') and stepmum tell DS1 they've done one lateral flow. FFS. I despair. I already explained to her once that you are supposed to get a PCR for symptoms!

EwwSprouts · 18/12/2021 12:23

Piggy Friend is a headteacher and she said missive from Dept of Ed. She's no drama llama.

Piggyinblankets · 18/12/2021 12:26

The D of E letter says to make sure risk assessments etc are up to date. I assume sensible heads are putting things into place. I did tell my colleagues to make sure they took their laptops home!
