I tried to sing the title... It kind of works...

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Thank you Monkey, that’s really helpful. What a great idea with the pasties.

Commiserations Oblomov, fingers firmly crossed for good news soon.

Isthisjustnormal · 02/12/2021 07:49

@singatones: I can’t remember (sorry) are your kids ND? Ds was only diagnosed (autism) at 13/14 or so (I think!) but found the process and the dx really validating- I was very unsure how it would ‘play out’ as we’ve always known he has ‘traits’ but assumed a dx wouldn’t make much difference. But I can imagine that could be very different as an adult with strategies in place!

Zebracat · 02/12/2021 07:50

You really are a wonderful bunch. Well done to everyone looking out for their babies. Mine is changing her options today to include Royal Holloway. Thanks so much for all the brilliant suggestions.Got my 2nd lot of tests today, feeling nervous.

Isthisjustnormal · 02/12/2021 07:57

Good luck with the results @Zebracat: Rotal Holloway is lovely (fairly local to us too): Ds looked round and loved the space but not the course unfortunately!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 02/12/2021 08:05

Sending you good luck vibes today, Zevra - I really hope the tests show nothing concerning.
Excellent news about RH - DD has applied for liberal arts there (it’s RH’s course that got her interested in liberal arts; she had never considered it before).

singing, DH believes he has ADHD, after living with DD and recognising all the same traits. I knew there was something going on with him, but now know it’s no coincidence. However, talking to DD’s co sultans and a psychiatrist he was referred to for assessment, the attitude seems to be, “ you’ve got this far in life, so you must have strategies to cope”.
Trouble is, DH struggles with lots of aspects of adulting and I have to pick up the slack. That aside, why would you ignore someone who is asking for help? He hasn’t had any choice BUT to find ways to manage, but life would be a lot easier and more enjoyable if he had a bit of support. (Would you refuse someone with a broken leg crutches, just because they’ve had to find a way to cope because they haven’t been offered them??)

EwwSprouts · 02/12/2021 08:27

@Zebracat Good luck with the tests.

@singingstones Watched My Family & Autism last night which you might find interesting. If you want to skip the young children part, the last third includes adult diagnosis.

Volterra · 02/12/2021 08:30

Good luck today Zebracat 🍀

Piccolo I think sadly the answer to your question is due to how under pressure those services are but could be wrong.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 02/12/2021 08:41

Volterra, that may well be the case, but it felt as though the attitude first and foremost was that adults didn’t need a diagnosis. DH has struggled for decades and has had all sorts of issues (debt, problems with work etc); it took him so much courage to ask to be assessed, so just to be waved off with, “ what difference would a diagnosis make? You’ve made it this far” was a huge set back.
No mention of limited resources, just “ why bother?”.

AnneOfCleavage · 02/12/2021 08:46

Hope your email does the trick singing. Are they predicting a C as they hope he gets a B so it shows how amazing the school is? Had same with DD and my email did work and she got her B prediction she needed. Crossing everything 🤞🤞🤞

Great news for your DS Fruitygal hope the next stage goes well.

Mmm pasties. Can you send one this way Monkey. He won't forget this very kind act.

Good luck to those with mocks coming up. DD's start on Monday and finish 14th I believe. She also has two dance exams on the weekend in between so she's having a wobble.

Came home and was so exhausted she went to bed at 8pm. Not to sleep but curled up all cosy. Think she still has the Covid aftermath exhaustion. I'm still having coughing bouts but back at work a week now.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 02/12/2021 08:49

@singingstones that is awful if she did laugh but even if she didn't it was still nasty to tell him to re-think his choices like that! Can he speak to the physics teacher to get the grade changed? In our school the teacher has to change it and submit evidence to say why the change. Seems to me 1 mark off an A is reason enough!!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 02/12/2021 08:51

Ah, in my outrage I didn't see your follow up post singingstones so glad you've done that. (braver than me!)

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 02/12/2021 08:52

Good luck today @zebracat

Volterra · 02/12/2021 08:55

It’s rubbish Piccolo and I agree with you. I am just very cynical at the moment about things like that. My GP sounded really depressed about the box ticking he has to do to be able to do a referral and how it means he can’t refer people in some cases as they don’t meet the criteria - even when he thinks there is something as he did with me.

Anne, your poor DD and you too. Hope you both get back to normal soon.

Heifer · 02/12/2021 09:04

Fingers crossed @singingstones that your email works - I did for me and I was so pleased I was encouraged on her to push.

Everything cross for you @Zebracat.

loving the sound of delivered pasties @Monkey2001 can you tell us where you got them from?

Good luck to all re Mocks. DD is taking her this week. Not going well apparently - keeps running out of time. She is getting really cross with her school for not supporting her. She is still waiting to be reassed re dyslexia etc. I am going to wait until Monday then chase again.

Personally I'm still feeling really rough, temp come down from 38.4 to 37.4 but cold moved to chest so lots of coughing which is keeping me awake - am knackered. I didn't feel this bad when I had Covid! Dr signed me off until Monday but I was hoping to be better way before then, looking unlikely now.

singingstones · 02/12/2021 09:12

Crazy and Isthis I think a diagnosis might help me to understand and maybe stop stressing about some of the things I feel I am not good enough at, iykwim. But on the other hand it is a bit of a shock to think that I might be ND. I also think it would help my family, but they will not believe it unless (and maybe even if) a psychiatrist says so. The DC are NT as far as I know. Starting to wonder about DS now.

Also I completely understand - of course adults will have had no choice but to manage as best they can, but that is no reason they and their families shouldn't have support! I am not looking for any major intervention but a diagnosis (or not) might help and maybe more information and finding other people in a similar position.

Anyway sorry for the derail, keep those offers coming so I can update my mad list Grin

Good luck to oxbridge and medical DC who must have interviews coming up. And Oxbridge medics Sandy!

singingstones · 02/12/2021 09:20

Thank you Eww, I will watch that.
Thank you all for the good vibes re grades. Anne I can't work out their strategy at all - spoke to my teacher DN last night and he said, ask them, if they are predicting a C after he got a B in the mock, how come the exam is such a poor predictor. Do they think he cheated or did they just set a useless paper? Grin

Good luck Zebra, everything crossed for positive news. And get well soon Heifer and others under the weather.

Oblomov21 · 02/12/2021 09:26

Monkey Dh orders a box of pasties from time to time. They are beyond fabulous.

Good luck Zebra.

Singing, I think you should look into this, investigate. Mn is very helpful re adult SN aswell. There is lots of advice and good tips. Because of Ds1 AS diagnosis, I too recognised years ago that I have many traits. I can be very abrasive if I'm not careful and I need to keep that in check.

ealingwestmum · 02/12/2021 09:56

So many battles having to be fought right now, fighting for fair predicted grades, UCAS forms to be sent off, correct medical diagnosis's, and getting back to good health, both physical and mental. Flowers

crazycrofter · 02/12/2021 10:29

Sorry to hear the mocks aren't going well @heifer. Dd has more next week and we still have no idea if she'll get extra time or not. I looked back in my emails and the SENCO said on 19th Nov that she'd get back to me after she'd met with the assistant head on 22nd! I've heard nothing.

There's such a contrast between her experience and my ds'. Her grammar school is considered more 'prestigious' and sought after round here than his is, but I'm not impressed.

Shimy · 02/12/2021 10:45

@Oblomov21 Sorry to hear about the rejections, don’t lose hope yet PWC might still pipe up. Deloitte etc are extremely competitive, DS has been applying for their 1 weeks work experience/insight week for the last Yr now and has never been successful, funnily enough he got the PWC one.

@singingstones Good luck!

@Zebra Wishing you all the very best with the tests and hoping you hear the good news you want.

@heifer Get well soon.

Wheresthebeach · 02/12/2021 10:51

Hopefully someone sensible gets involved @singingstones. That all sounds terribly unfair, and frankly handled appallingly.

@Oblomov21 - Sorry to hear your news. That sucks.

oh Monkey they sound fab.

Oblomov21 · 02/12/2021 12:11

Well, I've just got back from London from diabetic clinic, where I was severely told off because I haven't been paying it enough attention, not testing enough, and it's the worst it's ever been.
I will need to action this immediately. Sad

ExquisitelyDecorated · 02/12/2021 12:31

Oh no @Oblomov21. DH (t1) has constant problems with testing enough because they won't prescribe him enough test strips. I read last week that NICE are proposing that flash monitoring should be available to all T1 people, do you have that?

Oblomov21 · 02/12/2021 13:01

I do Decorated. No excuses, just taken my eye off the ball. I will need to re-focus.

singingstones · 02/12/2021 13:12

Oh no Oblomov - I hope you can find your focus again and get on top of things. Those DS's need you in tip top condition!
