OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 12/11/2021 18:33

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Need to catch up but just noticed on WIWIKA thread for those who have applied to Cambrige - there is a post on 11th Nov @ 20.00 from Rachel Lister, Head of Recruitment & Marketing at Cambridge Uni, showing 2 videos and she is taking questions.
@Piggywaspushed @ealingwestmum

ealingwestmum · 14/11/2021 07:53

Thank you Heifer

Happy 18th to your boy ican! Love the outfit choice Smile

Piggywaspushed · 14/11/2021 07:53

Thanks, I'll look! She does pop up from time to time on there!

Fruitygal · 14/11/2021 08:06

@icanbewhatiwant hope your DS is not too tired today to enjoy his birthday - Happy 18th

crazycrofter · 14/11/2021 08:09

Happy 18th @icanbewhatiwant ds!

@Fruitygal we had it last Christmas so pre-vaccine and dh has long covid too. He’s waiting to be referred to a long covid clinic. It’s very debilitating 😢

Fruitygal · 14/11/2021 08:13

@crazycrofter my DH refuses to go to GP but the fatigue is crippling him but his sibling has breathing issues which I think is far worse. Hope your DH gets a referral asap and some support.

EwwSprouts · 14/11/2021 09:26

Happy birthday to spider-man!

Monkey2001 · 14/11/2021 09:46

Yes, Happy Birthday Spiderman! Love the idea of a morph suit - may make it to my Christmas surprise list! DS2 used to live in Spiderman or
Mr Incredible with false muscles, but that would give him a great opportunity to flex the real ones!

Sorry to hear about the Long Covid. @AnneOfCleavage make sure you rest very well for as long as you feel rough as I have heard that overdoing it too early is a cause of Long Covid. But on the positive side, I think it is really unusual if you are double vaccinated so try not to worry about it.

@Volterra my post to you seemed to disappear! Hope you get a good outcome from your tests, let us know on here of any news.

Wheresthebeach · 14/11/2021 09:50

Congrats to your DD's offers @AnneOfCleavage - hope the final ones comes through.

Fingers crossed you recover quickly from Covid. It can be a b*h - that's for sure.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 14/11/2021 10:06

Happy birthday to your DS, icanbewhatiwant!

Thanks for all your kindness and advice, re school fees.

ZittiEBuoni · 14/11/2021 10:30

Sorry to hear about health issues AnneofCleavage and Volterra and alsoplayspiccolo anxiety over school fees. Wishing you all the best.

And happy 18th to icanbewhatiwant DS!

We've celebrated our great week of mocks, but I'm feeling slightly trepidatious again now because the real challenge of dd going back into class is rearing its head again. I think we'll make today as calm and relaxing as possible.

icanbewhatiwant · 14/11/2021 10:31

Looks like it's chopped his head off. But I can't tell till I post it. Thought I'd make you all smile....

That's not very appropriate the part you can see before opening the photo 🙈

Fruitygal · 14/11/2021 10:33

@Alsoplayspiccolo good luck with it all -….. as for the DCs flying the nest. Struggled when first one left for uni but they pop back mid term for family events - some times I was close by for a work course and would pop over on way home to take DS out for an early dinner. Last one leaves in sep 2022 and we’ve planned a 2-3 touring holiday for October which will support us with the transition - currently I have 1 DS at home after Msc but I imagine he will be working and living away after Christmas

Wheresthebeach · 14/11/2021 10:44

@icanbewhatiwant - ah...Happy Birthday Spiderman!

DoggerelBank · 14/11/2021 11:04

@Monkey2001 Manchester still on the cards here, along with Edinburgh and Glasgow - but we still seem a long way from getting an application in. Biotechnology course at Manchester looks interesting (to me at least - DS is as word-free as ever on the subject): microbiology, biochem etc with some modules on the business side of biotech, startup finance etc. Older DD will be studying there next year as the continuation of her St Andrews medicine course, so DS had initially ruled it out ... until he discovered there was an app that can alert you if someone [or at least their phone] is nearby, so you can run and hide.
Anyone know if Manchester interviews for every subject, and if so, whether they're more Oxbridge-like or group-based tasks or just a friendly chat?

Alsoplayspiccolo · 14/11/2021 11:15

Doggerel, not sure if it helps, but Manchester ask for an essay to be submitted on application for their film course - the only one of DD’s potential choices to do so.

Piggywaspushed · 14/11/2021 11:19

Manchester interviews for some subjects. Based on experiences, it's not an interview. It's a promotional chat to persuade students to firm it!

One of my students last year, they guy didn't turn up! (Virtually). Needless to say , it wasn't made a firm choice...

(not film piccolo!)

ealingwestmum · 14/11/2021 11:19

Manchester definitely doesn’t interview for every subject Doggerelbank, and I believe it is more like a friendly chat. I will report back later this week if different.

ealingwestmum · 14/11/2021 11:20

Lots of cross posting!

Volterra · 14/11/2021 11:57

Thank you all very much, you are all lovely 😊 Will let you know how it goes. I’m fortunate that i’ve been able to have a private appointment (GP said he couldn’t refer me as didn’t meet NHS criteria but felt something was wrong) and have bloods, xrays and MRI booked so should hopefully have better idea in a month.

Hopefully this is the worse bit and once we know what it is they can get me up and running again, I’ll settle for fast walking 😀

Piggywaspushed · 14/11/2021 12:47

I hope everyone who is struggling with health feels better down or finds appropriate advice/ help/ solutions.

Hang on in there AoC and pace yourself.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 14/11/2021 13:02

Happy 18th to your DS @icanbewhatiwant!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 14/11/2021 13:03

@AnneOfCleavage sorry to see that you have Covid, I hope it's mild and you recover quickly.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 14/11/2021 13:10

@Alsoplayspiccolo the school have handled that appallingly, I hope you manage to resolve things with them, what a time to be threatening that!
