Thread 23 Covid Cohort Stepping Into Christmas, Tests, Mocks & Interviews

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 12/11/2021 18:33

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Great news @JustHereWithMyPopcorn!

ealingwestmum · 23/11/2021 13:11

ah that's great JustHere, it is real for him now!

ZittiEBuoni · 23/11/2021 13:13

Fantastic news JustHereWithMyPopcorn and please don't feel that dd's struggles mean you can't celebrate! I honestly love reading everyone's good news Smile. Is Birmingham one of his top choices?

Horace123 · 23/11/2021 13:16

Congrats on all the offers and thinking of everyone dealing with difficulties.

DS received second offer today - from Exeter and needs 36 points so should achieve that quite easily I think (I hope!).

estherfrewen · 23/11/2021 13:26

Lots of offers today! Fab news @Horace123

AnneOfCleavage · 23/11/2021 13:43

Lots of DD's friends are having their first tattoo for an 18th present too ealing but they've chosen something small and concealed mostly. What does yours have in mind, do you know?

Zitti could your DD drop an A level or two to ease the pressure. With two A levels you can still do a foundation course through Uni. Very good point re grading for outside candidates. Not sure how it works.

DD has now heard from her 5th Uni and now will have 5 interviews prob in January so that will be exhausting. Hopefully some will be online.

Well done Horace's DS on Exeter offer. Is the 36 points UCAS points? Never heard of points so low given out or maybe I've misunderstood.

Still so tired and am back on my bed resting after hoovering and washing the floors. DD wiped out too and school piling on h/w and work load. She'll need another week off to get over it at this rate. May have to step in and tell them to ease off.

estherfrewen · 23/11/2021 13:51

Oh spooky! Just heard DS has got interview for history for cambridge. He has to email back as it clashes with his mocks

Wheresthebeach · 23/11/2021 13:53

Oh it's hotting up with the offers.

Great news @JustHereWithMyPopcorn @Horace123

@estherfrewen - oh I bet he's thrilled to have heard from Cambridge. Well done.

We'll on be moving onto worrying about grades next...

icanbewhatiwant · 23/11/2021 13:56

Congratulations on all the offers. Ds still hasn't even started on his PS yet. So we are a long way off.

Fruitygal · 23/11/2021 14:07

@estherfrewen fab news for him x

Fruitygal · 23/11/2021 14:09

@Horace123 First offer I’ve heard of from Exeter and they are reporting very very few early offers unless international so great news!!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 23/11/2021 14:16

Thanks everyone, not his top choice @ZittiEBuoni but a good reserve. I think we might be waiting a while for the other unis to respond.

Well done to @Horace123 DS and also fab news for @estherfrewen DS!

ealingwestmum · 23/11/2021 14:16

something small and concealed mostly

This is the hope Anne! Something flowery is my guess, I've not seen the final design yet.

So pleased esther, hope the clash gets resolved easily.

Fabulous Horace, it's great to have an offer that's well within their reach.

DoggerelBank · 23/11/2021 14:16

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn Fantastic! Well done, MiniPopcorn.

@ZittiEBuoni Sorry life is so tough for her at the mo. She's lucky to have such a supportive mum.

ZittiEBuoni · 23/11/2021 14:19

Ha, we must have manifested that Cambridge interview by posting about it estherfrewen - exciting!

Congrats Horace123 on the Exeter offer!

DoggerelBank · 23/11/2021 14:21

Oh, and lots more offers and interviews. What a talented bunch of DCs you all have!!!

@AnneOfCleavage I think 36 will be IB. Max is 45 points, but that is INSANELY hard. AAA in A level offer often translates as 36 points.

Fruitygal · 23/11/2021 14:24

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn congratulations on the first offer for DS - is it one he’s planning on putting first or second?

@ZittiEBuoni sorry you are going through it so many DCs like yours amongst our friendship group but one friends DS graduated this week a year later as he was struggling during 1st year uni and swapped courses. Found a little tribe and a new course and they have supported each other (Along with ongoing professional help and uni support) - the change is amazing. Has a new job and has developed an musical artistic interactive experience for a corporate client which is frankly stunning. Things get better over time and so good you are close and can talk.

Tattoos!?!? There are no words 😂🤣😂I told the kids that motorbikes 🏍 and smoking were banned pursuits by my parents but tattoos would be my add on. My only concession is IF they got into to the Olympics games I’d allow them a small set of Olympics rings in a hidden spot! ( An Oscar or a Nobel prize maybe considered worthy too!!😂🤣😂)

ProggyMat · 23/11/2021 14:32

Well done on all the offers!
@estherfrewen fabulous news on the interview!
DD has an Exeter offer: AAA

Heifer · 23/11/2021 14:34

I love how we discuss so many different topics that mostly in some way relate to our DS/DDs but it's ok if not :-)

Tattoos - DD isn't interested but she did get her bellybutton pierced in the summer - with my blessing suprisingly. My views have changed a lot now over the years. Years ago I would have thought no way would I allow my DD to do this or tattoo - but then I realised it's her decision to make not mine, and do you know what - I like her piercing. She loves it so I like it, it made her happy. - I've changed ;-)

estherfrewen · 23/11/2021 14:37

Thanks all - yes definitely Mumsnet hive mind responsible for that interview!

estherfrewen · 23/11/2021 14:40

Ooh great news @ProggyMat!

We always said only the Olympic rings as an acceptable tattoo! But in reality once he is 18 we couldn't exactly stop him.. .. luckily doesn't want to - yet

ealingwestmum · 23/11/2021 14:58

I completely get you Heifer. DD’s had a nose ring for over a year now, and it’s only recently that teachers have noticed - obviously masks have hidden a multitude of sins, whilst being a great contributor to conditions like spots!

But, she’s still the same girl, and I put first and foremost, do I like you as a person, are you turning out to be someone I am proud of. Apart from the domestic spats that comes with parenting, on the whole, she is and this keeps my appearance bias in check Smile

ealingwestmum · 23/11/2021 15:03

I can’t wait to see his swim career start again esther in uni, and those rings may just come back at you Grin

crazycrofter · 23/11/2021 15:10

Wow, well done on all the offers, I can’t keep track of them!

Dd had a piercing phase over the lockdowns. She added about 4 holes to each ear and I was worried she didn’t know when to stop! She doesn’t tend to wear more than 3 per ear now though. She’s also got a belly button piercing and recently had her nose done. When she got home she decided it was the wrong side and did the other side instead using her piercing kit! I was a bit cross as she’d wasted £30 plus I thought it might get infected but it hasn’t.

She just texted to say she’s decided on psychology and she’s got an extension on her PS til Sunday. I’m not going to show her the video I watched earlier about why you shouldn’t study Psychology!

estherfrewen · 23/11/2021 15:17
