Corona Cohort: Statements Scripted, Grades Predicted

Monkey2001 · 20/09/2021 23:04

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

From OrangeCinnamonCocktail:

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@Seeline sorry to hear about your DD, I hope she feels better soon. DS is still not right but is back in school, he's quite tired most of the time though.

@Piggywaspushed I saw you PS count on the end of the last thread which made me laugh - DS's is 3999! Grin, I told him to paste it in to his UCAS thing to make sure it doesn't get cut off and he assures me he has done this and its fine (not sure I believe him tbh! Hmm). He still needs to get it checked by the teacher but, as everywhere else, they are dealing with the Oxbridge/medics etc first.

DS has had some good news last week, the additional tests he sat for Biology have been marked and they have moved his predicted grade up which meant a collective sigh of relief in this house. He now has 3As predicted and an A* achieved in his EPQ. He now needs to ace his LNAT and hopefully he'll get some offers once he sends his application in.

Decorhate · 21/09/2021 12:21

@Delphigirl That is very concerning about your Ds’ friend as I know medics will have had lots of advice from the uni about how drug taking will scupper their careers.

Sorry for the delay in digging out historic data - unfortunately they don’t give it specific to those courses so is averaged with other similar subjects. For Southampton the most common grade was BBB and 79% had AAB or lower. For Cardiff most common grade was BCC and 78% had BBB or lower.

cariadambyth · 21/09/2021 12:21

Thanks for the tag @OrangeCinnamonCocktail, Im embarrassingly excited to be included!
All the drug talk is a bit of a worry.
DD has written the first draft of her PS and handed it into her form teacher who seemed very pleased with it luckily.
Sorry to hear of ill children, heavy colds seem to be doing the rounds don’t they?

Decorhate · 21/09/2021 12:24

@singingstones

Bristol - most common grade AAB, 69% had AAA or lower

Notts - BBB was most common grade, 82% AAB or lower

Sussex - BBB most common grade, 81% AAB or lower.

Decorhate · 21/09/2021 12:27

@Ewwsprouts Again, those specific courses are not given, it’s the average of all biosciences:
25% AAB
26% AAA
16% AAA
21% A A A
12% A A A

Monkey2001 · 21/09/2021 12:34

People looking at actual grades for courses, don't forget that some of the lower ones might be contextual.

Placemaking. Thank you for the new thread @Monkey2001

Hattifatteners · 21/09/2021 13:05

DS just started at uni and the whole drug thing terrifies me. I am not streetwise and I have never personally been in contact with drugs. Apart from walking past people who smoke weed. Can't really avoid that in London. Need to check with DS what it is like where he is.
On a positive note, DD passed her driving test today Grin

ealingwestmum · 21/09/2021 13:08

Nice one Hatti, well done to your DD!

ChristopherTracy · 21/09/2021 13:14

congrats @Hattifatteners!

Monkey2001 · 21/09/2021 13:23

Well done @Hattifatteners DD!

@Monkey2001 Yes I think there needs to be much caution this year & achievable courses chosen in case the number of places is reduced due to the universities not wanting to get caught out again or lots of students deferring until 2022.

Oblomov21 · 21/09/2021 14:24

Well done Hatti dd! 🚗

Delphigirl · 21/09/2021 14:39

Thanks v much @Decorhate.

whoamitojudge · 21/09/2021 15:17

Thank you for the tag. I’ve just caught up with the last thread. It’s been very interesting to read about the whole uni process.
DD is back at college and so far learning the exact same things in L3 as it was in L2 and is becoming very disheartened already. She’s got to retake her maths and I’m wondering what she will decide to do once she’s passed it if the course is still the same!
She’s very hopeful now that the travel restrictions have been eased as maybe the airlines will start recruiting again ✈️

stoneysongs · 21/09/2021 15:52

Thanks very much @Decorhate
That's actually quite heartening.

Decorhate · 21/09/2021 16:14

@singingstones When older Ds was applying & many of his choices had high standard offers, I had a frank chat with a very helpful person at one uni who revealed that they would normally let in everyone with one dropped grade & many with more than one.

Isthisjustnormal · 21/09/2021 16:56

Well done @Hattifatteners' dd! @whoamitojudge: that sounds so frustrating :-( Fingers crossed that the changes in travel restrictions mean some easing of pressure for the travel industry now.

stoneysongs · 21/09/2021 16:58

That is excellent news @Decorhate
I am starting to feel slightly optimistic for the first time in a while!

EwwSprouts · 21/09/2021 17:18

Thanks for the tag @Monkey2001

@Decorhate Thanks that is really useful to know. 50% have at least 1 A* and you have to assume it will be more popular this year given the recent Times league table. No idea of predicted grades yet.

Another here with no experience of drugs, no friends known to do drugs and I drink very little. I've tried to steer DS well clear of drugs as there is history of mental health issues in the family. So far so good I believe.

crazycrofter · 21/09/2021 17:19

Aaagh, dd is now wavering over Occupational Therapy! Ultimately she wants to work in mental health and she might want to train as a therapist. There seems to be so much overlap between the different professions - OT, mental health nurse, psychotherapist, counselling psychologist etc. It's a real minefield to try to get to the bottom of! And as I've done all the reading, she's now feeling at a bit of a loss. She really needs to do the research herself, but she's too busy socialising. She also needs to start revising...

Sorry to hear dd is becoming disheartened @whoamitojudge. Maybe the first few weeks are recap before they move on to new things? It might be worth checking with the college?

Piggywaspushed · 21/09/2021 17:22

Do you think it's to do with her dissatisfaction with the available unis for OT at all crazy?

stoneysongs · 21/09/2021 17:26

Hopefully the timing will work out just right for her @whoamitojudge
