And UEA is a fine institution!

Piggywaspushed · 12/09/2021 11:32

I suppose contact hours woukd be hard because of variability by subject.

stoneysongs · 12/09/2021 11:38

The ones who have selected Winchester, Chichester (never had Suffolk), Lincoln, Anglia Ruskin etc have been more successful. York is another place kids who want to manage anxiety levels head for and seem to prosper.

This kind of info is much more useful than much of what's in the league table.

stoneysongs · 12/09/2021 11:41

And I agree re conflating subjects - DS is interested in neuroscience so worth looking at biosciences and psychology, but those tables are completely different.

Piggywaspushed · 12/09/2021 12:15
@Piggywaspushed I live in Suffolk on the border with Norfolk. I've never actually been into Ipswich town. Ds2 used to play football and we've visited football pitches around the edge of Ipswich. But I've never been into the town.

Ds1 is at UEA. That is way down that league table for biology. Number 48.
The redeveloped waterfront is really nice! Otherwise, a very ordinary place. The area past the Orwell Bridge on the south side, is really pleasant and there's a great farm shop!

icanbewhatiwant · 12/09/2021 12:24

@Piggywaspushed Ds played a football match somewhere. We went under the Orwell bridge and drove along next to the river for a while. That was a lovely area that I wouldn't have seen if it weren't for the football. I shall have to go into Ipswich town sometime.

Piggywaspushed · 12/09/2021 12:28

Yes, that's the bit I mean. The Royal Hospital School is out there. Lots of water!

icanbewhatiwant · 12/09/2021 12:30

It was Shotley @Piggywaspushed had to look on google maps. That was a nice area.

ZittiEBuoni · 12/09/2021 12:41

Piggywaspushed - which universities are good for anxious students is exactly the kind of info we need and can never find. Much more important for dd than league tables.

Piggywaspushed · 12/09/2021 12:49

Yes, agreed. Often MN posts about this but they attract some not very nice posters...

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 12/09/2021 12:53

Alwyn Turner is at Chichester @Piggywaspushed
Yes to advising comparing all the tables and all the years!

There is lots of background research that needs to be done for course selection. It makes it harder if your DC can't decide on a subject. I'm very lucky as I work in HE and Dd has known since year 9 that Music was the strongest possibility for her (History, Sociology and Marketing /Event Management) have also been in the mix.

Dd has just left for the Southsmpton open day (only a short drive) i'm at home with the doggo and trying not to be too 'invested' . Music at Soton has held second place in the Guardian tables Durham top. If you look at the courses it includes the conservatoires so rather a blunt tool..which rather proves the point in discussion.

This is one of the reasons Winchester and Chichester are on DS's list. In fact they are probably favourite of all those we have looked at.
OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 12/09/2021 13:18

Always good to look at the ones with strong teacher training backgrounds...they tend to do really well on the student support side of things.

Piggywaspushed · 12/09/2021 13:21

Oh whoops, I meant Chichester! Silly me! DS's teacher went there and everything Blush

Decorhate · 12/09/2021 13:38

@Delphigirl That’s one of the reasons I’ve started offering to help with the UCAS applications at my school. Some of the kids have turned down really top ranked unis in favour of others & sometimes it’s because they think they will be more expensive etc. (and that’s often not true) or there is family pressure to stay close to home.

Decorhate · 12/09/2021 13:40

In terms of pastoral care, a young man I know had a very good experience with Surrey when he had stuff going on at home.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 12/09/2021 13:41

They are very similar cities tbf

University websites tend to not be very easy to navigate...those that have good student support do have quite a lot of info, you can often see what research they are participating in, projects /builds, staff appointments...how well they work with the SU is also a good indicator. Dd was v put off by applying to Bristol I suspect some of that was down to the fact they have a reputation for NOT being supportive of students with mental health issues. I don't know how true this is... point is any rumours are worth looking into they may just not be going the extra mile to support the students, if you need somewhere that does it won't do.

DD is at Wireless today, she’s having a great time but messaged me and said that they didn’t check her and her friend for their lateral flow test result on the way in 😷

icanbewhatiwant · 12/09/2021 15:13

Now ds3 is suddenly poorly. He said he felt fine one minute. Then he felt ill with a headache and feeling tired (he's 12) he has a temperature, we've done a LFT which was negative. So I ordered a pcr online. So he needs to isolate. Looking online it looks like the rest of us don't need to isolate as either double vaccinated or under 18. I hope that is correct. Ds2 won't be happy if he has to miss school. Ds1 won't want to miss work. I don't think it's covid though. He only went back to school weds too.

Piggywaspushed · 12/09/2021 15:14

Oh well, presumably she will test when she gets back...DS didn't get checked at a thing last week either.

whoamitojudge · 12/09/2021 15:46

@Piggywaspushed Yes she will. She has had her first vaccination already and said she will do a lft daily.
I hope you are feeling better
@icanbewhatiwant I hope your ds is better soon

Monkey2001 · 12/09/2021 15:53

Covid and Freshers flu are rife in St Andrews, they have had a much more normal Freshers week than last year, with opportunities to get drunk every night! DS2 in bed with a heavy cold, not like him at all. Might get Covid test if not better tomorrow. LFTs seen to be a waste of time!

Piggywaspushed · 12/09/2021 16:21

Hope your DS is OK ican. Lots of rest.

Yes, under new rules none of you needs to isolate if he has symptoms, is awaiting PCR or is positive.

Oblomov21 · 12/09/2021 16:21

@Zandathepanda

So sorry to read about dd.

Oblomov21 · 12/09/2021 16:24

Orange just got back from Southampton open day. I was probably sat next your dd, at one point? in the PS talk. Wink
It was all very busy, and I never even managed to get the bus to visit the accommodation. Sad
