Any other adults going back to school?

So I was a bit of a rebel when I was younger. I got kicked out of school but they still let me do my GCSE's. I did ok in them although I missed my maths exam because I had a hairdressers appointment 🙈 so I only got a D.

I went on to do a level 3 BTEC which I managed to pass despite spending most of my time in the pub.

When the time came to apply to uni I was as jealous of all of my friends who already had jobs so I passed on uni and went and got myself a job.

I've worked in admin pretty much my maths joke adult life. It's literally a job to pay the bills but with a mortgage to pay and 4dc to feee it's a necessity.

For a while now I've dreamed about becoming a midwife. I'm really passionate about it.

Finally decided this summer that I'm going to bite the bullet and make my dreams a reality.

My diploma doesn't have enough UCAS points to get me into the midwifery degree so I'm pretty much starting over

I've signed up for an access course at college which will be 3 days a week. I also have to do a night class to get my GCSE in maths.

I will still be working at least 16 hours a week in top of this and will be looking into doing some volunteering maybe with LLL.

So anybody else going back to school?

Me. I’m starting next Monday to redo my English and Maths GCSEs. If I get on ok my aim is to do an access to education course next year and then onto university.

Scary time but I can’t wait 😊

Northernsoullover · 09/09/2019 06:39

I already started two years ago. Its the best thing I have ever done. I just wanted to say good luck with it. I've another two years to go as I had to do a foundation year in place of an access course. Every month that passes I feel a step closer to a decent career. I still work 16 hours a week so its a bit of juggling but I am far more dedicated to studying than I was as a teen.
You won't regret it.

HermioneSnape42 · 09/09/2019 06:52

Thanks Northern. It’s a long road ahead of me personally but I’m taking it slowly to ease myself back in. They did offer to let me do my access course at the same time as my GCSEs but I decided it wasn’t right for me.

threeamclub · 09/09/2019 06:54

Yes me! It's my first day today, I'm doing an access course too, 3 days a week as well as my maths GCSE. Nervous & excited, I'm 20 and did a BTEC at 16/18 years old but need a more specific qualification for my choice of uni/degree hence the access course :)

Had a long road with MH issues and dropping out of school at 14, having to be hospitalised etc so it's a big deal for me to go back and be able to manage it all on top of depression and anxiety.

HermioneSnape42 · 09/09/2019 07:13

Good luck threeam Flowers

3boysandabump · 09/09/2019 08:44

Good luck for next week @HermioneSnape42.

@Northernsoullover I really coaster through college last time and spent most of my time in the pub 🙈. I'm really determined this time though and now I have a goal in mind that's going to keep me focused.

Good luck for today @threeamclub.

The drive in was much easier than my commute to work was so that was a bonus. Car park is heaving though so I'm going to have to make sure I'm here early to get in. Also need to find out where I get a parking permit from so that can be a job for later today.

There are so many teenagers kicking about the campus I feel like I stand out like a sore thumb 😂. They're all dressed up to the nines as well and I'm here in my mam trainers and leggings (I did do my hair and make up though lol)

Hope it’s going ok 3boysandabump

I’m dreading being the oldest and most untrendy person in the college Grin

3boysandabump · 09/09/2019 14:13

Well I've just found out that there is a whole floor with study space etc that the teenagers are not allowed on so I'm probably going to spend a lot of time there 😂

Good afternoon everyone! Sorry for not coming back to this thread yet, been a busy few days and today is my day with no classes- I slept until 1pm and it felt so goodGrin

I'm in Monday, Tuesday & Thursday each week 9.30-2.45pm. I'm doing an access to humanities & social sciences course and we have already been given 2 assessments!

How's everyone else doing?

littlemama18 · 11/09/2019 15:45

I'm starting level 2 accounting next week Grin I've wanted to do it for years and my DS is old enough now that I feel it's the right time! I can't wait, good luck with your course!

3boysandabump · 11/09/2019 22:16

@threeamclub hope you enjoyed your rest!

So far I've only really done an induction day but my psychology tutor gave us a reading list so I went today and borrowed the books and I've started reading the first one.

No assignments yet for me but we'll see what tomorrow brings.

Does everyone else just have to hand in written work or do you have exams as well? I have one exam (except for maths that's another 3) and the rest is written work.

I think we're going to start out UCAS applications next week as well which seems so early considering we haven't actually started any work yet.

Good luck for next week @littlemama18

Northernsoullover · 12/09/2019 00:24

I'm so excited for all of you! Is it UCAS time already? Its going to fly by. When I started my first assignments reached the dizzy heights of 50-55%. Its been lovely watching my marks go up. The one thing that surprised me about university was how many mature students there are. You won't be alone.

KeepHimJolene · 17/09/2019 11:15

The thread I need! I started an access course last week, am twice the age plus a few than the next eldest student. Love the content of the course, hate being the only one with experience in my field. It's going to be a lonely year.

threeamclub · 18/09/2019 01:34

I'm overwhelmed with all the work we have already, I had to stay home today (Tuesday) due to being so unwell with anxiety and fatigue related to my health condition. Feel awful for missing lessons and I just feel sick to my stomach about the year ahead. Sad

Hope everyone else is coping wellThanks

3boysandabump · 18/09/2019 12:22

Oh no @threeamclub sorry you're feeling like that.

A few people have dropped out of my class because they were a bit overwhelmed.

Please don't do that. Once you've had a few more lessons it shouldn't look as daunting.

I think it's a bit harder going back after time away from education.

I've been looking into the access requirements for the uni's I want to apply to and I found out I need distinctions in every unit of my course 😳

I'm trying to be quite strict with myself and every night From about 9 when all the dc are in bed I'm sitting and working/revising/reading textbooks. Only time I didn't was when we were away at a festival at the weekend. Just need to keep the motivation going.

Hope everyone else is getting on ok.

OP posts:
3boysandabump · 18/09/2019 12:24

Oh and meant to ask @KeepHimJolene which course are you doing?

It's good that you have experience already. I have absolutely none in the area I'm hoping to get into so writing my personal statement is proving quite difficult.

3boysandabump · 06/10/2019 16:46

How's everyone getting on? Has anybody had to had work in yet? We've been taught all our first module work now so it's just getting everything written up and handed in.

I've started my ucas application as well and I've been looking into getting some volunteer work to strengthen my application.

Has anybody been on any uni open days? I have one booked for the 26th.

OP posts:
3boysandabump · 23/10/2019 13:01

Don't think anybody is still looking at this thread but on the off chance...

Has anybody sent a UCAS application off?
I sent mine Friday and have had one sort of rejection. It was from a uni I didn't really want to go to tbh but basically they won't accept my GCSE maths as pending and have said I need to do a functional skills by January if I'm to be considered for interview. I think I'm going to look in to doing it just in case any other universities ask.

Have handed in 1 piece of ungraded work which I haven't had feedback for yet.
Also completed some group work which was a nightmare. Every group in the class had issues with people not turning up or not pulling their weight. I hope to god we don't have to do anymore group work.

If anyone else sees this how are you all getting on?

OP posts:
loutypips · 23/10/2019 13:24

I did it a few years ago when my dd was 3. Gave up work and just concentrated on my studies. Graduated three years ago, and hopefully will go back to do a masters.

Twoofmum2 · 27/10/2019 19:09

Well I have lasted a term!
We have been lucky and they have eased us in gently. Had one mock and one test assignment so far.
Assignments are beginning in November and then it's one after another after another, so hoping to keep on top of everything so it doesn't get too much.
I agree with group work being a pain, the teacher has started to get annoyed with people not showing up (quite often than not)
We are working on personal statements at the moment, hopefully sending off everything to UCAS shortly, starting to freak out over the thought of going to uni!

3boysandabump · 27/10/2019 20:29

I went to an open day at one of the uni's I've applied to yesterday. It was amazing and I'm more determined than ever to get in! Just need to practice, practice, practice my interview now because I'm not the best at interviews and even though I have a lot to say I forget it all when I'm sat there.
