A student has died of meningitis at Bath Spa University Sad

Bronzegate · 13/11/2019 18:21

How horribly sad.

raspberryrippleicecream · 13/11/2019 18:22

Oh Lobster, hope your DD is ok too.

DD has no water bills as it's Scotland. Small bonus! Apparently she is still sleeping with her bedroom window open anyway so the cracked pane doesn't bother her. They aren't prepay though, so hope the bills don't give them a shock! She was pleased with herself for researching and changing suppliers to a cheaper one.

DS1 is all inclusive, including TC licence and insurance which is great

Bronzegate · 13/11/2019 18:23

I do wonder whether they need to start including Men B in the routine teenage vaccination schedule.

raspberryrippleicecream · 13/11/2019 21:28

Ah, sorry I posted my reply to Lobster before I saw Gin's post. Mobile not refreshing quick enough.

Very sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/11/2019 22:00

That's a worry Lobster. In the States they give a dose of MMR to everyone in close contact with an infectious person. It could be worth looking into?

Gin that's awful :(

dd now not only has lots of thermals and layers, but has a new mahoosive radiator in her room and it's properly warm.
I feel a bit daft for posting her clothing, should have given her college a chance to sort it.

Gin how awful, very very sad.

DD and friends have done --way too
Much-- some research on mumps and discovered it can lead to viral meningitis, so were insisting on hourly checks of the patient which included testing for light aversion and an examination of legs and torso for any sign of a rash. Poor girl just wants to rest!
Fortunately her Parents have now made the 8hour round trip to collect her and take her home for a week or so.
Hopefully she'll be more comfortable, warm, and safe from her housemates' "care"!

I did ask about additional vaccinations, However according to the GP (and google) apparently the virus is contagious for a few days before symptoms even appear. DD and the others have all probably been exposed so if they're going to get it, they'll get it - no point in quarantine or boosters now.

Ahh that's good news Kitten, brilliant that they sorted it so quickly for her Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/11/2019 07:36

You might find this a useful piece of research Lobster. www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1703309

In a fit of paranoia (actually because I'm immunosuppressed) I've asked dd to see if she can get a third dose privately.

NICE agrees with you though :) I'd trust them. Ignore me! cks.nice.org.uk/mumps#!scenario

It's actually very reassuring :)

Smilephew!
Thankyou Kitten. Will obviously be watching DD like a hawk for any sign of symptoms.
Fingers crossed the mmr works for her and the rest of her housemates 🤞

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/11/2019 08:49

I'll be crossing my fingers for her too!
Sorry if I caused any alarm - as is typical for me, I went into uber over research mode Blush

Thank you OhYouBadBadKitten for the NICE link. Always good to see evidence-based advice.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/11/2019 14:09

Agreed!

You'd fallen off my TIO

DD has started her job and is contracted to do 30 hours a week but only until after the January sales. She has heard rumours that they might keep her on but she says she cannot stand the piped music through the store!

DH has had his double heart bypass surgery after much toing and froing so I am now on full caring duties Hmm.

Sunndowne · 14/11/2019 17:16

Gosh ursula that's a big op. Wishing speedy recovery and rest for you soon.

Knotaknitter · 14/11/2019 17:24

Ursula I hope that he has an uneventful and speedy recovery - he'll be back on his feet just in time for Christmas then? That would be the real issue for me, being Florence Nightingale AND chief elf at the same time.

How is the pseudoSpaniel doing? Is he a Good Dog?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/11/2019 17:36

I hope he recovers very very quickly Ursula and that you aren't getting too knackered with caring duties.

DD has started her job and is contracted to do 30 hours a week

How on earth does she have the time to work that many hours?
Best wishes to your DH for a speedy recovery.

UrsulaPandress · 14/11/2019 18:00

She has really buckled down surprisingly. She is either working or doing University work, with no faffing. Lots of 4-8 shifts or 11-4 at the weekend.

NotaSpaniel is doing ok thanks. He’s not affectionate in the slightest and keeps himself to himself. Gets me out of the house. Thankfully 😜

Sunndowne · 14/11/2019 18:02

Haha florence nightingale and chief elf!!!Halloween Smile Female duties. I'm being catered for one day at sisters and few days at ma in law. My contribution is I'm tutoring all nieces and nephews!!!!Smile

marmiteloversunite · 16/11/2019 06:58

Ursula I hope your DH has a speedy recovery. He has timed it just right to avoid the Christmas preparations. I hope he is being a good patient, not too frustrated or needy.

UrsulaPandress · 16/11/2019 08:02

Dd is working 20 hours not 30. Doh

Ginfordinner · 16/11/2019 08:08

I was beginning to think she was Hermione Ursula Grin

UrsulaPandress · 16/11/2019 08:12

Lol. It’s still a lot though.

And some idiot went home in her coat the other evening so she was stranded with no money, cards, bus pass or keys.

Security went through the cctv the next day and established who it was and she eventually brought it back. But not without nearly 24 hours of stress. Apparently she realised as soon as she left the store but just went home. Who does that?
