Somethingsmellsnice

DS1 in his his first year studying History. He is currently doing an assignment about the Winter of Discontent. The lecturer suggested that students could interview their parents for source material! Sadly for DS1, I was five years old in 1978-79 and not even living in the UK.

Stickerrocks · 31/01/2019 16:16

Well Kingscote am I lazy or incompetent? Grin

Something DD was thoroughly disappointed when her college announced that they were going to start an ultra modern history A level in September, whilst she is starting with the Stuarts upwards.

We've had an email from college saying that they are currently open for tomorrow, but to stay tuned. Was it really only 11 months ago that our schools were sending home work for them all to do electronically?

KingscoteStaff · 31/01/2019 16:23

Lazy, Sticker, definitely lazy...

In a serendipitous moment yesterday, DS's essay on MacCarthyism coincided with DD's essay on Arthur Miller and they swapped helpful points over the kitchen table! They are definitely being less vile to each other these days and even co-operated on buying us an anniversary present.

Somethingsmellsnice · 31/01/2019 17:04

TheFirstOHN I was in the UK and was 14/15. I do remember the powercuts!

Somethingsmellsnice · 31/01/2019 17:05

Can I assume people realise my previous username

TheFirstOHN · 31/01/2019 17:27

Wilson? Is that you?

Somethingsmellsnice · 31/01/2019 17:30

Sh×t on it! Rumbled Wink

sandybayley · 31/01/2019 17:49

I can't keep track of the name changes! Confused

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 31/01/2019 17:50

Thanks, TheFirst, I needed a clue. You are just a baby! I was 14 then as well. ‘Crisis, what crisis?’

Well, the Gordon Gecko shirt must have helped, DS1 has been offered the job. He’s just holding out on the leading online book supplier who said he’d hear next week.

Where are all his rejections? I had loads back in the day. Now they just seem to ghost you (or offer you a job!) I guess a predicted first beats my Desmond. Wink

Females?

Stickerrocks · 31/01/2019 19:00

Excellent news Ellen.

whistl · 31/01/2019 19:35

I have just been very rude to a teacher. It was parent's evening and a HoY who enabled Ds1's bullying to go on for an extra 18 months was in front of me to speak about DS2 who is in her class. It's the first time I've seen her since it happened.

DS1 didn't get mentioned once, but he was in my mind all the time and I couldn't help myself. My eyes just narrowed when i looked at her. I'm sure she had no idea why because she'd have forgotten what had happened to DS1 long ago. She is naturally cold but I was really abrupt and unfriendly, boarding on hostile. And I was quite challenging in the way I asked questions.

I feel bad now!

Welcome back, IDS. I guess you aren't a fan of the former tory leader, then?

Great news Ellen very well done to your DS

KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse · 31/01/2019 20:42

Phew! Caught up at last! I've been trying to read all the posts so I could join in with the late dyslexia discussion but it's all moving too fast!

Anyway we are going through that now with dd. A good friend of mine is studying for a masters which will qualify her to carry out dyslexia assessments. She asked if she could assess dd as part of her coursework because of her low English grade compared to maths and science.

I wasn't expecting her to find anything really but in the initial assessment she scored her as definitely warranting further assessment.

She thinks we should speak to college about her using a laptop or extra time. Dd is thinking about it.

With her it's not really reading or spelling. It's word recall and speed. She gets her words muddled when talking and it's worse when she's anxious. She's always been the same and was a very late talker.

I totally get the bad mother thing. All that stress last year about English language. Extra time would have made so much difference. Sad

She was assessed in y6 but they said she performed too well for the tests to measure anything. The tests were for 7-11 year age range and she was a bright 11.5 yo at the time.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 31/01/2019 21:02

Sorry, whistl but that’s funny. I bet she does know why. Karma.

Kick is she at a different sixth form college to school? Good opportunity to get her assessed with no preconceptions.

Horrible grandma?

Stickerrocks · 31/01/2019 21:08

Oh my goodness. Al, I can think of now is Horrible Grandma's horrible dog being squashed by a Christmas tree. I'm watching Dinnerladies and I'm torn between which is the best comedy. Maxine Peake has liked a tweet of mine. I'm in heaven!

Stickerrocks · 31/01/2019 21:09

Who is Al? All, all, all.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 31/01/2019 21:10

Thanks for all the congrats re DS1. He’s not accepted it yet, not sure if it’s too much like evil corp for him. Wink Truly, he has surprised me, he’s getting interviews all over the place. I think he quite fancies living in London for a few years. This job he’s just been offered is in our home town so not terribly exciting for him, even if it is a big multinational.

Just to balance this, I’d be happy if DS2 gets any sort of job one day.

Oratory1 · 31/01/2019 21:17

Interesting the different impacts on different dc. DS is supposedly bright too (not in comparison to some on here - but ended up with 7/8/9 s at gcse) but it was clear early on there were issues - didn’t read properly until year 3/4 so allways playing catch up and had poor SATs and year 11 entrance exams. I guess it’s a combination of intelligence, character, schooling, determinatine and the precise nature of the spld combination and other strengths/difficulties that determine its impact. But whatever the story they should all get any extra support and consessions going to help them compensate for their difficulties whether they’ve overcome some of them themselves or not.

Somethingsmellsnice · 31/01/2019 21:24

Kick definitely follow up.

Stickerrocks Yes females Wink

Comefromaway · 31/01/2019 21:29

Hi - Alex here with my name change.

I’ve got really behind with the thread. Things have been busy. There are issues with ds (he’s not sleeping, getting exhausted and being sent home from school but blood tests clear and hospital won’t do anything at this stage (dr suggested melatonin but hospital won’t. )

Dd is happy and doing well. She’s had assessments this week. She isn’t happy about an issue with English & we have contacted Head of Dept about in our opinion, poor teaching and use of Wikipedia for class notes from one teacher.

Stickerrocks · 31/01/2019 21:32

Good to hear from you again. That's Lit not Lang, isn't it.

Has anyone applied for UNIQ summer schools?
