So sorry Something hope you get some good news and good things happen soon

bpisok · 25/02/2019 22:16

My Nan always said that luck ran in 3s - so hopefully the rest of 2019 should be good. Really scary that you were all in the house though.

The area I live in is a nice part of town in a rough borough. Last year there were 1.5k violent/sexual offences....lots of stabbings too.
But apparently my postcode doesn't warrant special consideration!

LooseAtTheSeams · 25/02/2019 22:21

Something so sorry to hear that Thanks

whistl · 25/02/2019 22:51

Something that's horrible. Don't let it all wear you down. Burglars don't realise how much upset they cause. Or at least, I hope they don't.

How frightening for you all something Flowers

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 26/02/2019 10:39

I'm sorry to hear that, something. Flowers

I had a similar experience 9 years ago. We were burgled as we slept, they stole my car to use as a getaway vehicle and abandoned it after setting fire to it to destroy any evidence. It was very annoying as the car was the most valuable thing they stole! Insurance paid out but the lack of bank cards and car made the next few weeks tricky.

I've managed to block out any fear. I was divorced within a year or so and have to spend many nights alone in my house so I just had to get on with it.

All that trouble and inconvenience for the few hundred quid they gained. Angry

whistl · 26/02/2019 13:56

just an aside. remember when people were getting tagged into new GCSE threads but they weren't getting the notifications?

Well MN have emailed me today about having been tagged on a thread and they now include a link to where to set what notifications you want. For anyone who still wants to know how to do it, here it is:

That's awful Something - you've been through the mill [flower]

We set our house alarm overnight to 'night set' (so the sensors are active downstairs but not upstairs) and our alarm is monitored by a response centre. Thinking of getting CCTV too

LimitIsUp · 26/02/2019 14:04

Oops Flowers

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 26/02/2019 17:41

I have that set to ‘notify me etc’ but it still doesn’t work.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 26/02/2019 17:48

My DS3 has just been asked to join the ’boost’ group at his school which aims to support those with high aspirations for university. I think they’ve just noticed he’s actually pretty good at maths. Grin His GCSE results weren’t spectacular by any means so he’s been flying well under the radar! Better late than never. He’s going on a visit to Oxford, St Catherine’s College, tomorrow with the group for a taster day.

whistl · 26/02/2019 18:21

That's great news, EllenJane!

I’m quite chuffed for him. He’s always been in DS1’s shadow, somewhat. Nice to be recognised on his own merits. Smile

I do find it tricky among my friends not to sound like I’m showing off about my DSs’ academic abilities but it’s fine to be proud of sporting prowess and many of my friend’s DC are more popular and dare I say, attractive than my DS. All these things are as much an accident of genetics as of good parenting, so it’s nice to have MN to celebrate these little successes. As a divorcee and with my parents both gone there’s nobody closer to share them with. Smile

242Mummy · 26/02/2019 19:26

Oh EllenJane share away! We'll celebrate your DS's successes with you - there's plenty of affirmation for all our DCs.

Not much happening this side - it almost seems 'down time' till next term when there will be exams and hence revision, then UCAS prep and parents' evening. Maybe it's just as well we get a little respite before it all goes full steam ahead!

Oratory1 · 26/02/2019 19:45

Lovely news Ellen and share away !!

LooseAtTheSeams · 26/02/2019 19:48

Ellen love it! Well done to him and I hope he has a great time! Star

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 26/02/2019 20:08

Aw, thank you for indulging me!

TheFirstOHN · 26/02/2019 20:32

EllenJanesthickerknickers
I'm glad they're recognising his potential.
Hopefully it will open up some opportunities for him.

KingscoteStaff · 26/02/2019 21:22

Ellen I feel that all the contributors to this thread consider themselves Honorary Aunties to all the DC, so it’s great to hear of success for any of them!

Stickerrocks · 26/02/2019 21:55

...I wonder how different our epic threads would be if rather than being honorary aunties, this was on Dadsnet not Mumsnet.

Tonight I have been to an Oxbridge potential evening. There must have been around 300 parents there. They have received 31/121 offers from Oxford and 31/78 offers from Cambridge. They stressed that not all offers will turn into a firm place. Around 20% of those were for young people with some grade 7s (I think they were deliberately using new grades) rather than straight grade 8s and 9s, as some applicants were from poor schools or dodgy postcodes or for music/art based degrees. They suggested doing your EPQ in your preferred subject OR further maths as a 4th A level, but not to do both. Anyone taking 4 subjects is already stretching themselves thinly, so they shouldn't take on anything else. I have paraphrased all that.

Stickerrocks · 26/02/2019 21:56

Something did you get a decent night's sleep & how are you bearing up?

whistl · 27/02/2019 01:50

EllenJane share away! It's nice to hear about all our DC doing well, and sad to think of your Not being fully recognised until now. I am glad it's happening now though.

I can relate to your sporting prowess point though. Sometimes through primary and secondary school it seemed like teachers were so keen to find something to celebrate other than academic success that they'd go over the top about sporting, artistic and musical achievements. Or maybe those things just make for better assemblies? (A bit like celebrating good attendance records, or improved behaviour!)

Do you know what the school will do? Maybe assign someone to make sure their personal statements and university applications do them credit?

LooseAtTheSeams · 27/02/2019 07:40

It's sometimes a bit embarrassing for me to admit just how unsporty my children are (and they are really uninterested!!) because everyone else seems to do at least 3 sports round here. They are good at music but far fewer children care as much about it. DS2's school is much bigger on sport than music, needless to say so DS2 stays well under the radar! (He's fine with that.)
DS1's mock results were a very mixed bag and I suspect it's down to exam technique. I know he spent a lot of half term working on psychology because he knows what went wrong so hopefully this is a positive experience in the long run. English went well so no worries there. Philosophy went half well and half what happened there???!

whistl · 27/02/2019 08:25

DS just got his exam results back yesterday. He only has the raw scores but we think they are going to be A(star), A(star), A for the A levels.
The AS level grade boundaries are so close that it's hard to tell how his score will be counted: C is 51% and A is 62%.
So we are pleased!
