Placemarking - DD has had a very rough introduction to 6th form (multiple additional needs - none disastrously severe but all too much as a whole) but we’re hoping she’s got into the groove now: mocks OK, so I’m trying to catch up on all the things I need to know. I’ve learned so much in just half an hour on this thread, so can I say thank you on behalf of all the lurkers.

Stickerrocks · 09/02/2019 11:57

You're welcome. We go off at a tangent every so often, but our DC are such a varied bunch (maths, sciences, humanities, musicians, dancers, sporty, health issues, additional needs, super-bright, bog standard teenagersheading for apprenticeships, heading for uni, hopefully not heading for trouble) that we can normally find someone who has been there or can guide us in the right direction.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 09/02/2019 12:21

242 DS3 has always wanted to be a maths teacher, since he was in primary school. DS1 knew he’d want to work in software but the path to that isn’t so rigid. For instance, he dropped computing as a subject after AS and continued with maths and will finish his maths degree this summer. He’s been offered 4 jobs so far as a software graduate trainee and has one more interview lined up.

We are a diverse bunch, Lorca. Even within my own 3 DC I have one high flyer, one middling and one with SN. If I can find any sort of job for DS2 in the next couple of years I’ll be happy!

TheFirstOHN · 09/02/2019 12:24

DS2 made his own way to the Physics Masterclass (his first solo overground train journey). The day went well, apart from him getting a bit drenched by the rain when walking back to the station.

Welcome to FindPrimeLorca
Glad to hear things are settling down for your DD now.

LimitIsUp · 09/02/2019 13:16

Kickbishop - I am thinking of going to this careers fair with ds (only in Y10 but keen on geography). I think there are quite a lot of career options with geography geoscience careers

KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse · 09/02/2019 15:25

Thanks limit. That looks great! Sadly we are over four hours away Sad

I'll keep an eye out for something more local.

Comefromaway · 10/02/2019 14:53

Dd is back in the country. She’s had a fantastic time in Holland.

This is possibly a bit outing but tomorrow she’s part of a choir singing with a BGT winner.

Stickerrocks · 10/02/2019 15:49

That sounds very exciting. How is the physio/injury recovery coming on?

Comefromaway · 10/02/2019 20:44

It’s doing well thanks for asking. Which reminds me she wants me to book a pointe shoe fitting now she’s getting back to strength.

Stickerrocks · 10/02/2019 21:00

I read a really interesting piece in a book about a company which makes pointes. I hadn't realised the degree of precision required and how quickly they go through them. Fascinating stuff.

Comefromaway · 10/02/2019 21:02

It’s an entire art form in itself along with the fitting.

idsisatwat · 10/02/2019 21:19

Somethingsmellsnice Thanks for the info. We’re beginning to narrow them down a bit now. And, even more importantly she actually spoke to us about it all, instead of the usual grunts we get!
She’s now booked an open day at St Andrews, and has decided not to look at Exeter. Mainly because the subject she wants to do is taught at Penryn Campus. Which would take us all day to get to.

I now need to catch up on the thread. Grin Though I don’t think the 70’s should class as history as it makes me feel too old

idsisatwat · 10/02/2019 21:24

@[whistl] nope, definitely not a fan! Doesn’t help that I work for one of his previous department’s

bpisok · 11/02/2019 00:47

So anyone else's DC fed up of unifrog already? DD has reverted to her big spreadsheet already 😀

Comefromaway · 11/02/2019 00:57

What is unifrog?

KingscoteStaff · 11/02/2019 06:00

DS is spending a lot of time on Which University and also on something called Tab (?) - there is one for each institution.

TheFirstOHN · 11/02/2019 07:10

I'm not sure The Tab is representative of the university experience. 🤣

LooseAtTheSeams · 11/02/2019 07:53

Couldn't get on with unifrog. Think I will challenge DS to produce a spreadsheet and use Whatuni at half term.

NotEnoughTime · 11/02/2019 11:11

Hi everyone
Can I join in please?
I have a DS in year 12 hoping to go to University next year or a Conservatoire or an apprenticeship or a gap year or .... Grin
So, lot of things to consider.
It would be nice to bump along with you all for the ride if that's ok.

NET
ps Comefromaway My DS and I are going to see this next month-can't wait. Have you seen it yet or planning to?

veiledsentiments · 11/02/2019 11:47

Half-term started here today. Huzzah! Three days of peace on my way to work. Don't think she has any plans as of yet, but hey, she's 17, so who knows. Found a beach we can take the 5 month giant, bouncy pup too where we can let him off the lead and he can swim, well kind of, he's not very good at it yet. Husband is on the way back from the vet with old dog, who has just had major gum surgery, so giant, bouncy pup is going to have to be on best behaviour.

Somethingsmellsnice · 11/02/2019 12:05

Hello NotEnoughTime

Welcome to the thread. We are a mixed lot on here with mixed grades - with arty kids, scientists, mathematicians, humanity specialists, some Oxbridge hopefuls, others also looking at apprenticeships, other unis (at all levels) and post 18 plans.

There have been a number of name changes along the way too and sometimes it takes a while to work out who they were before but mainly we are all here to hopefully support the kids and other parents (who let's face it sometimes need more support than the kids do!)

Comefromaway · 11/02/2019 14:25

Hello from me as well.

I used to be Alexander Hamilton but I decided it was time for a change. (I guess you are sensing a theme here)

We go to see Come From Away next week during half term. Everyone seems to be giving it amazing reviews.

NotEnoughTime · 11/02/2019 14:40

Thank you somethingsmellsnice It's great that there is a real mix on here. I totally agree with you that we need a hand hold too. It is my first time going through this situation and I never went to University myself so I'm very worried that I will steer my DS in the wrong direction.

Thanks also Comefromaway You will have to let me know what you think of the show. Funny enough my DS's number one play is Hamilton!

veiledsentiments · 11/02/2019 14:59

My 17 year old plays Hamilton all the time too. Must be an age thing! Mind you, they also play Neil Diamond at "gatherings". Thanks to my parents, I'm non too keen.

Comefromaway · 11/02/2019 15:04

Hamilton was one of the best pieces of theatre I have ever seen. But I am really, really looking forward to Come From Away.

Veiled - my ds plays 80's music - all the time. He says its better than most of the crap today!
