A-level: How much harder is Further maths than regular maths?

or is FM more like parallel level of difficulty, rather than the next stage on of difficulty? I'm asking after a conversation about when do people hit their 'ceiling' with math, wondering if FM is just a bit harder or much harder than regular maths so more likely someone could hit their ceiling with it.

Hoping NobleG is around & I'll get her attention. Thanks in Advance.

I don't think we're disagreeing Keneft. That's why I said it was stupid if that's what they are doing. Yes, the OP should ask and make sure that there isn't some automated process that would disqualify her application.

"I don't see that's inconsistent with accepting a student who already has Maths, and then takes Further Maths, Chemistry and Biology in Year 13"

I agree.

Can I resurrect this thread?

DD looking at doing Maths, Further Maths and Geography at A level. She is predicted level 8 in GCSE Maths and enjoys the subject. At the moment she is considering maths at Uni, but given this is the third change of her A level choices by the end of y13, it could all change again!

Although school offer F Maths, DD says they may not go ahead with it as low on numbers. Don’t know if this is true.

Entry requirements for maths at some Uni’s don’t ask for F Maths but would DD be at a disadvantage if she didn’t take it. H of 6th form says no but reading other posts on here I’m not sure Hmm

I’m concerned that DD could take F Maths, Maths and Geography but then decide not to take Maths as a degree how things will work out for her? I’m concerned that she could struggle with F Maths and is then left with 2 A levels. School do F Maths in Y13, so how would we know in Y12 if she would cope? I guess the answer is to take 4 to start with and see how “normal” A level Maths is going and decide from there.

Advice, thoughts please?

Definitely take 4 to start with. Far too many eggs in one basket with just those three.

Lack of FM shouldn't be a problem if the school decides not to run a class, although it will rule out Imperial and Oxbridge but (and sorry to be blunt), an 8 at GCSE isn't Imperial or Oxbridge calibre.

She'd also need to be aware that a lot of kids on her degree course will have done FM - but by no means all.
