Y13 Summer term: Finishing Lessons, Starting Exams and leaving Sixth Form

catslife · 22/04/2018 15:07

So our dcs are now on the last term of sixth form, finishing off lessons and starting their exams.
How did that happen - doesn't seem that long ago since they started Y12.
This is the thread where we support each other as our dcs revise and start their exams, finish off coursework, leave sixth form and make plans for what to do with the rest of their lives. This may involve going to uni or other alternatives.
Every Y13 parent is welcome to join in whether new to these threads or if you have been with us for a while - the more the merrier.

Just a passing observation. Dd is off to yet another 18th birthday party at the weekend. It seems to be a thing round these parts that the boys who are having a 'bit of a do', the parents join in and invite all their mates as well. Not one single girl has done this but at least 5 boys have. Weird.

LoniceraJaponica · 10/05/2018 06:49

Wow, so many high acheiving DC on this thread. Are there no posters with DC who aren't achieving A/A* on mumsnet?

I don't think they release the geography coursework scores before results day.

doistayordoigo · 10/05/2018 07:29

Has anyone else firmed an offer that is unconditional if firmed? DS has, but it is still showing on UCAS that he has accepted a conditional offer. The information on the uni website said it would change after deadline day, but nothing has happened yet. Don't know whether we should contact the uni to check or leave it on the assumption it will change eventually?

chocolateworshipper · 10/05/2018 07:48

LJ me! DD has 7 GCSEs at C or above (only one of them is an A) and is not doing A levels - only BTECs

UrsulaPandress · 10/05/2018 08:32

I've often wondered that about ID. Who wants to carry their passport around with them?

TheSecondOfHerName · 10/05/2018 09:31

DS1 is probably looking at CCD, although it might be higher if he's lucky with the questions that come up.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 10/05/2018 09:46

Happy birthday to lobster's dd.

As I have said before I really think we need to have ID cards. You need ID for so many things these days and if you don't have a current passport or a driving licence then it makes life really difficult.
Ds had neither and wasn't likely to need either for their intended purposes and registering at university was a bit of a nightmare. The same happened to dd when she opened a bank account.
It must cause so many problems for people who don't drive and never have a passport because they can't afford to travel abroad.

You needed ID to vote in 5 trial areas at the recent elections. Ways to disenfranchise folk.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/05/2018 11:58

Lonicera these threads have always had a really good spread of parents with kids across the academic spectrum. That's why it's been such a great support for many of us I think, that we are all in it together, no matter what the expectations. I hope that no one feels inhibited from talking about their dc wherever they are on the academic spectrum.

That is a weird observation Ursula!

catslife · 10/05/2018 12:28

dd has always been considered as fairly average and obtained Bs and Cs at GCSE. I am expecting results in the B,C,D range and will be pleased with these. She does achieve As for some aspects of her courses but not others. She is rather selective in what she tells me though.

I think I read somewhere that to actually introduce ID scheme would cost many millions/billions, and they would be charging 30 per ID at least, and then some people would be disadvantaged by that initial cost, (compared to having a recent bill/birth certificate sort of proof leading to another sort of id like a student card) It is not as simple as just "ID" card, and there are all the data implications, once people don't have ID they become second class citizens, and when they do, they are being "tagged" in some way data wise.

Luckily ds does have a passport, I might think of getting him a provisional driving licence too, good idea.

Lobster love the cake making and balloons. I made ds a cake myself, but it was vairy simple, I think he was most disappointed and would have liked everything to be a bit more glam/think dancing girls/boys and streamers.

Kitten (I think it was Kitten, apologies if I'm wrong) I was thinking of doing just that for ds's 18th , inviting lots of my own friends and relations. Perhaps it is fear of what 18 year old boys get up to without hierarchical structures. Ds is not a natural host.

Doistay ds's unconditional is still appearing as a conditional, and his insurance is still there, tho it is not supposed to be anymore! Still, I don't think it makes much difference, ds's conditional from that first uni is still pretty low (104 tariff points) He should be able to get that (gritted teeth)

Second I am hoping against hope that ds will get CC and a Distinction in his Btec. English is pretty ropey. And I know all the things that go wrong...having myself got a E first time I attempted English A level...as I think we have discussed on this thread before, in the old days A levels were really hard Grin

Nettleskeins · 10/05/2018 12:44

Anyway, I think I am projecting too much when I say I@m Hoping, I hope that DS is hoping, after all it is his exams and I need him to start caring about them a lot more than ME^!!!!!

UrsulaPandress · 10/05/2018 13:01

It was never the parties. Never thought of the hosting thing. DD is a bit of a natural

FantasyAndHope · 10/05/2018 13:45

Bit strange ursula
Happy birthday to mini lobster

Dd is booked in for surgery on her eye after exams

Still no phone call from dr apparently they can’t get a phone call for 2 weeks Hmm

puppypower1 · 10/05/2018 14:08

Great to hear surgery is booked Fantasy

Happy birthday to Lobster DD

Lonerica - no strings of A*/A here either.

UrsulaPandress · 10/05/2018 14:28

Wit woo. DD got 56 out of 60 for her English coursework.

raspberryrippleicecream · 10/05/2018 16:27

That was back quick Ursula well done to your DD!!!

Lucycat · 10/05/2018 16:31

We've got DD a provisional license to use as ID even though she's not learning to drive. Living in a big city she hasn't felt the need to, as seeing her steer a shopping trolley is proof enough of her lack of spatial awareness 😂
She does have a passport too so they just use the photo from that and it arrived in less than a week.
It must be birthday season, my DD is 18 next week - before exams thank goodness.

HesMyLobster · 10/05/2018 16:36

Wowzer! More amazing coursework scores!
Well Done Ursula's DD!

The Birthday girl got a birthday gift of 38/40 for history and 40/40 for French!

I have to hold my hands up and admit to making DD's Birthday a bit of an "invite all my own friends" event!

My brother is the landlord of a pub in town so we're going there for cake and the buying of the first legal drink. I invited grandparents, aunts, uncles who are local too, and then it snowballed into most of our friends!
DD and her small group will tolerate us oldies for an hour or 2 before heading off to the more happening bars in town!

Leaving me to drink wine and reminisce with my lovely friends WineGrin

TheSecondOfHerName · 10/05/2018 16:46

Nettleskeins DS1's weakest subject is also English (Literature). He got an E in the mock and 20/40 in the coursework, so a C might be optimistic. It wasn't a subject he chose, and (unlike his other two subjects) he doesn't seem to have much of a passion for it. He has at least read all of the texts, but has not given much thought to learning quotes.

UrsulaPandress · 10/05/2018 19:07

Well done to your DD Lobster.

FantasyAndHope · 10/05/2018 20:20

Well done ursula and lobster

Dd is busy making friends in a group chat with all the people who have ‘firmed’ that uni

UrsulaPandress · 10/05/2018 20:54

Gosh how did she get in touch with them Fantasy? Was it facilitated by the Uni?

FantasyAndHope · 10/05/2018 22:20

Yes ursula as soon as they sent offers out the university emailed all offer holders about joining a group for students of September 2018 intake
Very useful group!
