Y13 Summer term: Finishing Lessons, Starting Exams and leaving Sixth Form

catslife · 22/04/2018 15:07

So our dcs are now on the last term of sixth form, finishing off lessons and starting their exams.
How did that happen - doesn't seem that long ago since they started Y12.
This is the thread where we support each other as our dcs revise and start their exams, finish off coursework, leave sixth form and make plans for what to do with the rest of their lives. This may involve going to uni or other alternatives.
Every Y13 parent is welcome to join in whether new to these threads or if you have been with us for a while - the more the merrier.

That's harsh for your DS2 TheSecond! 🙁

DS has just handed me his exam timetable proper....I'm to "look after it"

watfordmummy · 08/05/2018 21:40

We start next week Pre u in Philosophy and Theology, and don't end until 25 June.

Completely agree doesn't seem any time since I first dropped him at reception.

FantasyAndHope · 08/05/2018 22:38

Thanks puppy

God that is rough, dds are back to back pretty much but after half term second

LoniceraJaponica · 08/05/2018 22:42

I thought all the A levels apart from art and spoken language exams were after half term. DD's first one is on 4th June. No revision at all done today Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/05/2018 07:08

There are a small number of maths papers before half term too.

Nettleskeins · 09/05/2018 08:46

ds1 went to his first ever Gig in Camden last night, a delayed 18th birthday present which he organised himself with an older cousin. He forgot his Id and had to order Coca Cola from the bar, which is no bad thing. He was Very tired this morning but I'm happy, and he's happy, that he managed to do something fun for once which involved people and independence. oh and music!!

He's started to talking about a possible Gap Year....Confused if he doesn't get the grades, this is actually quite a mature reflection for him as usually he just says, oh I've got an unconditional I AM GOING To UNI.

so much changes in even two months

LoniceraJaponica · 09/05/2018 09:21

It's great when your children start showing independence. Due to social anxiety DD is nothing like as independent as I was at her age. I worry about her going somewhere out of her comfort zone because she will just withdraw into herself, or cry.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/05/2018 10:09

Social anxiety is a bastard :( it steals so much from people.

Do they get free dentist and prescriptions until the end of August? Been trying to work out if dd needs to fit appointments into half term or whether they can wait until the summer hols.

I think that when dd goes off to uni I'll offer to pay for a prescription prepayment certificate for her, so that she needn't worry about prescription costs at all.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 09/05/2018 12:36

kitten yes they get free health costs until CB stops or would stop which I think the letter said was 5 September for dd.

She might qualify for free NHS costs depending on her loan amount and accommodation costs. It is worth checking out once you know the details. It is form HC1 which you can download from the internet.

DD seems to be fairly happy with her maths revision but not with physics. In fact she is so panicky about it that she isn't doing any revision except in actual physics lessons.
Her ASD makes it really hard for her to ask for help unless the teacher is right in front of her. I don't know whether to flag this up with the school or not. And she doesn't know whether she wants me to or not either which doesn't help.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/05/2018 13:55

Thanks NoHaudin. That's helpful :)

Your poor dd.
I've found that when dd doesn't know if she wants help or not, then she's relieved when I do. I think in the interests of getting her through physics I'd contact school.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 09/05/2018 17:05

I think that I will have to. The school has always been very supportive so is shouldn't be a problem.

UrsulaPandress · 09/05/2018 18:45

English and History coursework finally submitted.

FantasyAndHope · 09/05/2018 18:58

Dd has to pay for prescriptions and I still get CB she’s 19
Blood results back
She’s vitamin D deficient
She’s vitamin B12 deficient doctor needs to ring her to discuss
Borderline folate deficient

Explains the tiredness and coeliac test is awaiting to come back

Hurray ursula that’s a nice relief
loni social anxiety is a bastard as kitten rightly said.

haudin
Dd refuses to ask for help it’s hard

Nettleskeins · 09/05/2018 19:34

when they say to supplement with over the counter Vit D or B12, Fantasy try to pin down exactly the amount. Ds was taking 20,000 a week for a month when he was first diagnosed with deficiency (under 25) and I had to push the doctor for a higher dose than the original 10,000 a week, which in fact a maintenance dose. Ds is taking 10,000 a week in one single capsule atm and he has been not been deficient since last Feb. It has helped him so much. My doctor recommended HealthAid brand. Most Gps are not so clear on how to bump up a deficiency and very scared of toxic doses, which is in fact quite difficult to achieve apparently.

Ds unfortunately has been playing computer games since doing a little bit of revision on Handmaid's Tale, I've now given him supper and locked him back in the front room with his notes. Luckily ds2's desk is in the same room as the xbox.

FantasyAndHope · 09/05/2018 19:38

nettles
She was too low for over the counter stuff so she was prescribed vitamin D on prescription
She’s yet to know how they will deal with the B12 defiency

Nettleskeins · 09/05/2018 19:52

B12 is often injection, a friend's dd had this.

dd's Vitamin D was 55 recently which is sufficient and she is still tired, so I've given her some every day (25mcg a day) she is tanned and outdoorsy and had three sunshine holidays over oct and dec (one was a friend, one was Lanzarote and one was ski-ing with school) It really is so easy to be low on Vitamin D or B vitamins particularily if you have a typical teen girl diet.

Nettleskeins · 09/05/2018 19:53

I meant DESPITE 3 sunshine holidays she is still has a comparatively low reading. She has quite olive skin which possibly is another factor in her medium reading, and always wears suncream religiously.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 09/05/2018 20:25

Fantasy I oversimplified. CB is paid until the end of August/beginning of September after child finishes full-time non advanced education. Free prescriptions stop automatically once child reaches 19th birthday. However they can claim on the HC1 form on the basis of their own income. I claimed this for ds as he did an extra year in 6th form and has a September birthday. Unless your dd is earning lots from her holiday job (unlikely I would have thought) she can get free prescriptions and dental treatment etc.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/05/2018 21:46

It sounds like that your dd is getting there with her health Fantasy. Hopefully by the time she starts university all of this will have been sorted and she will feel much much better. It's no wonder she is always so tired.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/05/2018 21:47

Ursula that's brilliant. Hooray!

HesMyLobster · 09/05/2018 22:04

Ursula hooray for the coursework going in! Hope you're celebrating with a big glass of something!
I'm currently up to my ears in buttercream, icing sugar and wrapping paper!
DD's Birthday tomorrow and for some reason I decided I needed to bake an actual cake for her little gathering. Confused
Let's just say it's not quite as simple in construction as it was in my head . . .
I also still have her presents to wrap!

DD was wafting around earlier reciting conjugations but I think I just heard the shower so hopefully she'll be in bed soon so I can crack on with decorations and balloons.
I still like to wait til they're asleep so it's a surprise on their birthday morning - even after 18 years!

UrsulaPandress · 09/05/2018 22:06

Aw. Happy Birthday to your DD Lobster.

LoniceraJaponica · 09/05/2018 22:14

Happy birthday to your DD Lobster

DD doesn't turn 18 until the middle of July and can't wait to be old enough to go into town with her friends. So many places require you to be 18 to get into these days.

Also, the only ID they will accept is a driving licence/provisional driving licence or a passport, so DD will have to apply for a licence even though she has no intention to learn to drive any time soon.

Does anyone know how many times you can keep renewing a provisional driving licence?

starfleet · 09/05/2018 22:38

Happy Birthday to your DD Lobster!
