Just noticed we were running out of thread!

starfleet which other Unis is your DS interested in apart from Liverpool? DD seems pretty focused on what she does & doesn't want course wise now, so think she is starting to whittle it down! Exeter & Manchester are next visits & maybe one other London one as she's done two London Taster Days now.

starfleet · 10/07/2017 01:28

TheDrs - I thought the halls and the area they are in looked quite nice, green open spaces and almost park like - they don't seem to be too close to residential houses. Was it the city halls your neighbours DS had horror stories about or the student village ones?

Lashings - DS said he would pick Manchester if it wasn't so close to us (it's virtually on our doorstep) I have told him that he doesn't need to live at home...! He quite liked Nottingham and Leeds. He hasn't looked further south than Nottingham so far although has made noises about maybe visiting Birmingham....he might be going on his own as I have open day fatigue and information overload right now.

TheDrsDocMartens · 10/07/2017 03:42

starfleet I'm not sure, just talked of a high number of prostitutes working the area. He did graduate a couple of years ago so they could have cleaned up by now.

MsAwesomeDragon · 10/07/2017 22:49

We're off to Lancaster on Saturday. I'm glad it's the last one this summer, even though it's only our third. Dd has pretty much decided that she really, really, really wants to go to Durham, and will happily visit other places and even apply for other places, but she's planning on going to Durham.

PandaG · 10/07/2017 23:25

I live in Sheffield, and am.involved with current students from both uni and hallam - feel free to ask questions and I will help if I can. :)

LoniceraJaponica · 10/07/2017 23:28

When is the open day for the medical school in Sheffield?

NoHaudinMaWheest · 11/07/2017 13:51

msdragon we are going to Lancaster on Friday. What is your dd looking at?

PandaG · 11/07/2017 14:07

Sorry, that I don't know, I meant more about accommodation or the city in general. :)

LoniceraJaponica · 11/07/2017 14:10

We are near Sheffield and are familiar with it. I know they had an open day at the weekend, but not for the medical school.

arsenicistheanswer · 11/07/2017 15:24

WOW! I had no idea how easy it might be to arrange a visit out with Open Days. I just emailed the relevant department of one place DD is keen on but can't get to the open day of. They replied within the hour with an appointment with the admissions tutor! She doesn't need to see the rest of the uni, accommodation etc, because for various reasons, she knows it all already. I'm slightly emboldened, and might try to do the same with one or two more she's interested in but we just couldn't get to on the open day.

lashingsofgingerbeer · 11/07/2017 16:27

starfleet can totally relate to Open Day fatigue & information overload! Confused Did your DS like Nottingham's BA Geog with Management, or is he only interested in BA Geog? Liked Nottingham's Geog talk by Geog student & HOD & the Geog lecture on economics side of music business.
MsAwesome & NoHaudin would be interested to hear what you think of Lancaster as we can't make open day.

UrsulaPandress · 11/07/2017 16:34

arsenic is that during the summer holidays?

MsAwesomeDragon · 11/07/2017 18:33

NoHaudin we're looking at computing science. I think we'll have a look at some accommodation too.

muffinmonster · 11/07/2017 18:53

arsenic, I found the same when looking around with DD - course directors and admission tutors were really approachable and willing to spend time and show her around outside of the normal open day It's always worth asking! (and then there was the Open Day where DD was the only person attending for her subject and got the full guided tour with the course director. Smile)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/07/2017 21:46

hmmm, maybe I shouldn't have been buying train tickets for weekends then for visits. I doubt they would want to see dd at a weekend.

starfleet · 11/07/2017 22:25

lashings DS is definitely leaning towards a BA not BSc. Human over Physical.

arsenicistheanswer · 11/07/2017 23:39

Yes Ursula it is in the holidays. We are coincidentally nearby on holiday anyway, so I thought I'd ask. DD has already had a tour and accommodation visit when looking at a different course, so "all" she needs to do is talk to the department properly. It is further from home than I'd like, but if it is the right place for her we'd best get our heads round it!

chocolateworshipper · 12/07/2017 18:03

Anyone had results of internal exams yet? DD's friends seem to have all done really badly. According to them it's because the exams were based on past A level papers, but they've obviously only covered the first year. Those with Us are being told they can't continue into the second year. I am feeling even more grateful that DD is doing 2 BTECs!

More good news is that she's just found out that the BTEC subject she wanted to do instead of the one A level (because she knows she will have failed the AS) is now being offered as a one year intensive course. This means she can come out with 3 BTECs - all equivalent to A levels. Previously we thought this 3rd course would only be equivalent to half an A level because she only had a year to do it in.

starfleet · 12/07/2017 18:23

Yep. They were all over the place.

I emailed all his teachers as we didn't receive the end of year reports when they said we would. None of them seem to be concerned and his predicted grades have stayed the same. He put all of his efforts into revising for Maths AS and as his Biology teacher said "it's obvious he's taken his eye off the ball for these exams". That didn't stop him sending home a shed load of papers for DS to work through over the hols.

School have said that all Yr12 need a minimum of a D in the subjects they are taking to stay on and in some cases an E.

MsAwesomeDragon · 12/07/2017 20:14

We've had results for most of the internal mocks. She seems to be on track for meeting her predicted grades, which is good because she gets really frustrated with herself if she misses a grade. She's got one paper still to get back, and that's the one she thought she'd messed up on.

FantasyAndHope · 12/07/2017 20:58

Sorry! Dd has had a hetic time recently with her ex boyfriend. She has just revealed everything to me this past week. Some of the abuse she's put up with Shock I'm horrrified
Anyway....dd prefers a city uni she said campus is too like school and she wants a major change.
Hull uni open day this Saturday

starfleet · 12/07/2017 22:01

Hope your DD is OK Fantasy. Seems like she's had a pretty tough time of it recently.

We are booked in for Hull on Saturday - DS now unsure if he wants to go and visit...

He has decided he likes Liverpool.

LoniceraJaponica · 12/07/2017 22:15

"School have said that all Yr12 need a minimum of a D in the subjects they are taking to stay on"

Same at DD's school. They all did AS levels though, so no results until next month.

arsenicistheanswer · 13/07/2017 00:04

All AS for DD, so no report, no results and no predictions till September. It is agonising!

starfleet · 13/07/2017 07:06

Only took AS's in the subject they are dropping and General Studies. The rest were all internal exams.
