Anyone in Alverstoke?

Hi (am all newbie and dim, apologies)

DH just got papers for move to Portsmouth posting in March. Tantalisingly close timing for being able to get DD into her first Primary school via "normal" application dates.

We'd really like to live in Alverstoke if possible and apply for her to go to Alverstoke County Infants School. But am hearing that Type IVs there are like gold dust. So, is this true? I need a spy to take a look at empty-house-numbers but I don't know anyone there.

Or here! Hoping this isn't bad forces sweetheart etiquette but would really like a few tips. Never moved before and DH newly promoted too so over excited at thoughts of extra bedroom and porches or whatever!

Cheers all.

Hi Squidgy (that sounds most familiar),
Few things in life are more important than good butties so you could be very useful indeed!

My oh my, have interview next Monday 2nd for a job in Portsmouth. Not quite sure I expected to get as far as interview?

On the downside it means a pricey overnighter in Portsmouth to make the appointed time; on the upside this means can have a recce of Old Portsmouth AND Alverstoke (might even try to visit a couple of schools?)

So this means I have a really good excuse to DM people and ask for precise location of cake shop & butty merchant! Maybe if Squidgeyeyeballs and Alloveryet still alert to this tread I will get to find out anyway without having to figure out how to DM? Oh go on, brain melted doing on-line school applications already!

SquIDGEyeyeballs · 25/10/2009 20:10

Well done on your interview LovelyKay! What time will it be?

I am working the morning of the 2nd but am around if you need any directions/pointers.

The nice coffee and bacon butty cafe is on Stokes Bay front, it's called the Bayside Cabin

Good luck!

LovelyKay · 25/10/2009 21:00

Brilliant, thanks.

Haven't quite worked out what I am doing - DH is taking kids to how parents for whole weekend so may come and have a nosey early-ish on Sunday to allow full scale inner torment pre-interview on the Monday! Must find notes from last interview, in July, (first since 1997...) as style very different to what I remember. Much like my hair, waistline and professional credibility perhaps?

alloveryet · 26/10/2009 19:54

I think that Alverstoke Inf has a Teacher training day on the 2nd, but if you make an app I'm sure they'd show you around.

Am around all day on the 2nd if you need to eat cake, I could prob force myself!

LovelyKay · 27/10/2009 20:04

Dear me, at this rate I shall be eating cake and butties and entirely forgetting about interview altogether. Oops and I bought new shoes too...

LovelyKay · 31/10/2009 22:41

Oh oh, alloveryet I never did ask you where the cake shop was? Planning to 'do' Gosport, Alverstoke section anyway, on Monday afternoon in post-interview haze before hiving off back home to family.

Go on then, where are the best cakes? I might need one after hoovering up a butty first at the Bayside Cabin!

Given up on idea of visiting schools as may put them off my best beloved though might hover outside to get a bit of a look.

(I know you're probably not still aware of this thread but worth a try...)

'The Tea Rooms' serves lovely homemade cakes. Its in Alverstloke 'centre', between the church and the fish and chip shop.

(The 'centre' is a whole street long so it shouldn't be too hard to find!)

Good luck @ the interview

LovelyKay · 01/11/2009 20:57

You star alloveryet. Am missing my babies (yuk did I really say that?) so thinking of running over on ferry first thing in morning then can head home asap after interview. Will need fortifying Eccles cake before ruinning back for ferry so will investigate Tea Rooms. Thanks!

largeginandtonic · 01/11/2009 21:04

May spy in to tea rooms for bimbling moomins in new shoes...

LovelyKay · 01/11/2009 22:05

Goodness LG&T the new shoes and smart togs won't go on till absolutely last minute at hotel nr station so as to Avoid Crumbs. This not dishonest as nowhere on person spec did it mention anything about basic table manners & napkin wielding.
Will do my bimbling in jeans & grey flannel hoody + furtive expression. And crumbs... See you there?

OP posts:
largeginandtonic · 01/11/2009 22:18

Oh yes.

I will be the plump one in the corner pretending to be on her 1st bit of cake.

Lovely lady runs it, she has my chickens you know

Good luck!

LovelyKay · 01/11/2009 22:27

Splendid. (My sister keeps chickens...)

Oh that went OK I think? Bracing Gosport air in the morning lent a rosy glow to my complexion & a spring to my step perhaps. But Old Portsmouth (exined in depth yesterday evening) also seems very nice. A quandary then or, excitingly, a win-win situation. Assuming we get either and as James would say assumption is the mother of all...

Thanks to all for the help and assistance. Portsmouth sweethearts a friendly and amusing bunch and no mistake!

Hey, I got a call today and they have offered me the job. OK, provisionally as have bureacratic hoops to jump through but this should be fine, so, hurrah! Have even taken into account my situation re move and said can start in January.

Guess this means I'll be off soon to start a new thread on childcare recommendations in Portsmouth/Gosport. Any useful tips? then maybe I'll see you there!

Singed · 03/11/2009 21:37

Well done, hurray, great news!!!!

We shall have to celebrate with cake next time you're down here

LouBavs · 25/03/2010 15:38

Sorry to bump this thread, we are moving to Portsmouth from an overseas posting and are trying to decide on our 3 choices.

If the 3 storey houses on Alvercliffe are Type IV, have they got 4 bedrooms? Also having looked at the google maps street view, are the detached houses with garages in the row behind also Type IV?

We really wanted Southwick Park, but were told that OH could only get a house up there if we were posted there.

Thank you.

MrsSnaplegs · 07/06/2010 12:38

Anyone mind if I rebump this thread? I start work in Alverstoke next week and OH going to be stuck in Northwood with LO until DE can find us a suitable 1/4. Don't like doing unaccompanied at best of times but esp not when I am pg. I am the serving one and he is house hubby so we are a bit odd compared to most service families (he is ex mil though!)

For medical reasons we need to be in Alverstoke and type 4 but can't do Alvecliff Drive as 3 stories so this is making it exceptionally difficult! DE are talking about possibly Xmas before we could possibly get somewhere - I'll be going on maternity leave then - HELP!!
We have NPFS, Dr and OT involved although that didn't seem to count with DE when we first applied - they didn't even bother to read the assessments!
If anyone knows of anywhere in Monckton, Nepean, Jellicoe or Coastguard coming up either a Type 4 or with a completely separate dining room please let me know!!

As such will be down there on my own for next few months - will be working mostly during day but might have to take a stroll to Tea Rooms in the village for cake at lunchtime! Is anyone a member of Miracles? Thinking of joining to keep up my exercise regime somewhere quiet and close to work. Any comments on it?

Mrs S

knit1purl1 · 22/06/2010 23:18

Hello Mrs S,
Did you have any joy getting a suitable house?

I am the one who started this thread ages ago (under another name! Sneaky...), noticed it was alive again and took a peek. We settled in Old Portsmouth in the end and it has been brilliant but I keep meaning to pop over to Gosport & sample the delights of that Tearoom again, very yummy cakes they were too.

Hope DE have come up trumps in the meantime,
E

MrsSnaplegs · 17/07/2010 21:09

knit1purl1 No luck on the house yet now waiting for an OT assessment - supposedly on OT Direct (NHS) critical list but will still have to wait 4 weeks!! Will then have to wait longer for DE to make a decision! Not sure what this OT will say differently to the 2 Dr's letters, OT assesment, personal statement and NPFS letter but hey ho - have to keep smiling.

Gennacy · 20/07/2010 20:35

Hi, was wondering if any of you ladies can help me.

My DH has just been informed he will be working at HMS Collingwood come November, so we are looking at areas we can live.

He is going to be a Sergant (snco) and we have 4 children, so entitled to a 4 bed D type(not a type IV though i think?)

As we are RAF we have NO IDEA about the Portsmouth area and we really need help!

Thank you so much for any help you can give

ilikeclunge · 20/07/2010 20:45

i live there. in cardboard box by lampost. its sweet man

Gennacy · 20/07/2010 20:53

Wow, must have great internet access then hubby will be happy!

mumbar · 20/07/2010 21:02

Actually a nice area near collingwood, Asda nearby and beach down the road with fort fareham opposite. Not mil so don't know about mil houses but people I know that live in ones in this areas are all nice.

MrsSnaplegs · 21/07/2010 14:27

Gennacy

Best bet is to get in touch wiht the HIVE at HMS Sultan, they will send you a link to all theproperty in the area. Best bet for you if hubby is going to Collingwood would be Seafield Park or Daedalus - mostly new builds, nice areas right by the sea in Hillhead. there are some in Fareham but not sure where abouts they are.
