POLICE PAY CUTS

This morning the govt have said police will face "pay cuts"

I suspect this is a harsh statement clearing the way for something less serious

Police pay is complex with overtime and much sick leave.

In my experience the police usually win their battles with governments.

To put some bones on it a newly qualified PC gets between 23 and 25 grand a year..with extras.

Perhaps more than a nurse or teacher for starters. cheers "Gabby"

Pensions

I forgot mention that the police do something like 22 years service. That would leave them retiring at under 50 if they join up young "Gabby"

Not sure why this thread is in this forum.

The police are on a pay freeze (like the rest of the public sector). As staff costs are a high proportion of the budget, this accounts for a lot of the reduction in the overall cut to the police budget. This means that the headline cut (including pay freeze savings) is rather higher than the remaining cut which will impact on what the police can actually do.

But even aiming off for that, the cut is still described as "challenging" (anyone know what that's code for: "will hit the front line"?)

vintageteacups · 02/03/2011 11:24

I assume Gabby was thinking of police forces so woudl be in this forces sweethearts thread?

GabbyLoggon · 02/03/2011 11:32

meditrina. This forum can take serious and jocular subjects. (as you prove)

I repeat police pay is a complex issue. (some of it partially buried.)

Teresa May, who became famous for calling the Tories the "nasty party," Is the Home secretary
handling it.

And it is common practice for politicians to up the anti on early statements. (to inspire press headlines.)
The press call some of the shots all the time. The voters once every 5 years. So lets try and keep
real; and not romanticise the politicians, the police;or indeed the posters Cheers "Gabby"

PS Are you directly or indiractly involved with the police or politics Meditrina. ( I just observe the scene, go to court, talk to coppers and write about it)

Gabby - I think it's because she meant this forum isn't about any of the three HM services - army/navy/raf etc.

meditrina · 02/03/2011 11:43

No, I just happened to catch some of the statement on SKY.

It seems the overall pay bill will be smaller (because of impending pay freeze), and that this is a large slice of the headline figure for cuts.

What bothers me is the use of the word "challenging" in terms of the reductions in the rest of the budget (even if that's a smaller %age than the headline cut including pay). It strikes me as very Sir Humphrey, and seems to be foreshadowing some painful reorganisation (about which nothing definite has yet been said publicly - or can anyone point to info I've missed?)

[PS: only questioned about it being in this forum as I'd though "forces" meant the Armed Forces - happy to be corrected!]

Vintage....Forces sweethearts. You sound as if you have a photo of Very Lynn on your bedroom wall.

This is a police thread, the boys and girls in blue, the thin blue line, the police v Govt..

the Big Match over the next few months; if you like. Teresa May or may not(as a non- Tory, I rather like her.) Did you see that coat of many colours she wore in the Commons? (Or was it a cardi?)"Gabby"

I too thought that this forum was armed forces; not police, fire or ambulance?

And no - I don't have a picture of VL on my wall Smile

scaryteacher · 02/03/2011 11:56

Might be better moving this to In the News Gabby, as Forces sweethearts tends to be HM Forces stuff. FYI Forces sweethearts is from a toast ' Wives and sweethearts, may they never meet'.

GabbyLoggon · 02/03/2011 11:58

Med thanks for posting. There is some hidden stuff going on.

But the police Commissioner election is said to be going ahead. It will be interesting. And it suprises me. cheers "Gabby"

Vintage Am I supposed to gather from your frivolity you have no interest in policing our nation? (Or perhaps you are a police officer on
undercover posting?)

Laid any demonstrators yet? "Gabby"

FreakOfNature · 02/03/2011 13:07

"Gabby", with all due respect, you may want to take a look at other threads on this board. You will find that most of the posters here are primarily concerned with the Army/RAF/Navy.

Like most people, posters here will have concerns about policing our nation but the ups and downs of military life tend to be the main source of chat.

GabbyLoggon · 02/03/2011 13:15

fair enough chuckerbutty

But I did the Army and Panorama "Soldiers to teachers" prog. It went well and veered all over the place. I am older and perhaps more versatile subjectwise than most posters.

I dont want to become a one subject johnny at this stage of my life.

I am content to let Mumsnet run the show. But not self appointed supervisors. Seems very reasonable to me "Gabby"

back to the subject Perhaps some people are wary about posting on a police issue. I have done it for years. And my local police accept that. "Gabby"

vintageteacups · 02/03/2011 13:57

blimey - all I meant was that I thought it was in the wrong thread. Wasn't being anything other than helpful.

vintageteacups · 02/03/2011 13:57

............and generally, the topics are supposed to helpful in knowing what to post where; you wouldn't post about an ingrowing toe nail in the goodhousekeeping section for example Wink

scaryteacher · 02/03/2011 19:03

No-one is trying to supervise you Gabby, but you won't get many bites on here; you may get more of a response on In the News, as suggested previously.

We are all a bit more concerned about redundancies in HM Forces than with the police frankly.

penguin73 · 03/03/2011 08:07

Gabby, I think the point your missing is that this forum is normally where we talk about things to do with the Armed Forces, you would get a better uptake if you posted elsewhere just as scary has said- and those of us who are interested/concerned will follow you there. It is unlikely that non-mil types will click on forces sweethearts and see your thread.

Barbieissick · 03/03/2011 11:36

Hmm Confused Biscuit

GypsyMoth · 03/03/2011 11:43

Does it matter tho? I mean there is also the military police and MOD police. Where would they be discussed?

AnnieLobeseder · 03/03/2011 11:48

Gabby, your point is a valid one and is already being discussed on other threads, like this one.

The Forces Sweethearts board is for discussing the Armed Forces, not the police, so you would probably get a more interesting discussion going if you reposted somewhere else.

GabbyLoggon · 03/03/2011 11:53

Tiffany

Military police? Here if you like. I did not have much to do with them; but like most authority figures they were totally non smilling on duty.

MOD? Mod rhymes with God...and the Ministry of Defense do act like God on occasions. Chin up

"Gabby"

OP posts:
meditrina · 03/03/2011 11:55

MoD Plod are covered by the Armed Forces Pay Review Board and thus are not affected by yesterday's announcement.

penguin73 · 03/03/2011 11:59

I think you're missing the point, we're not saying don't post here, just that this isn't what this forum is normally about so you wont get as much feedback as you will somewhere else - eg chat/news/AIBU.

(I have met some lovely smiley MOD policemen and women btw)
