Going to a friends for a 1970's themed meal and I am taking the starter. A few don't like prawns so prawn cocktail is out. Apart from Melon & parma ham, what others are/were there?. Just saw on t'net Celery and primula cheese . Any ideas please? Ta

Cheese and pineapple hedgehog? More of a canape I suppose.

I would probably do mushrooms a la Greque (this recipe is almost word for word the one my mum gave me yonks ago).

thereistheball · 14/06/2010 08:16

Oh, you serve them with a baguette.

sharbiebowtiesarecool · 14/06/2010 08:18

pate?

taramasalata?

avocado?

thumbwitch · 14/06/2010 08:20

Cheese and pineapple on a stick, cheese and silverskin onions on a stick, cheese and olives on a stick.

Celery can be done with Philadelphia instead of Primula (my mum used to use Dairylea) and then you dust it with paprika - it's not as bad as it sounds, honest!

Soup? Don't know what the soup du decade was though, probably carrot and coriander?

Vol-au-vents with a bit of coronation chicken or mushroom and cream cheese

mini-quiches

Smoked salmon rolled around cream cheese (or was that more 80s?)

GooseyLoosey · 14/06/2010 08:28

Melon with cocktail cherries on it.

Granny23 · 14/06/2010 08:43

Typically 70's starters not mentioned so far:

consomme
halved boiled eggs with pink sauce
Fresh fruit juice
pate with melba toast

ilovemydogandMrObama · 14/06/2010 08:44

prawn cocktail
cheese and pineapple on stick

Or just do a fondue!

PenguinNZ · 14/06/2010 08:52

Breaded garlic mushrooms. Avocado with vinagerette (sp?).

Although it prob wouldn't go down well I can just about remember when both orange juice and a corn on the cob where offered as starters on restaurant menus.

AvadaKedavra · 14/06/2010 08:59

It has to be vol-au-vents with that nasty tinned creamed mushroom slop in them

DelGirl · 14/06/2010 11:04

yum, loving these recipes

ok, I think I may do a few celery, though can't stand it myself. Pate & Melba toast and maybe some melon & parma ham. Does that sound ok? I may do a few cheese/pineapple sticks for good measure!

I could have done a fondue but i've just given the one I had in the garage to charity doh! It had never been used either!

Penguin, I saw avacado vinegraitte (sp) on come dine with me. The guy called it vinney gray and just put the vinegar neat onto the avacado. Nice!

I have a few 1970s Home and Garden magazines, and the food pages include:

-tomatoes stuffed with cream cheese
-salami boats stuffed with cream cheese
-ham rolls stuffed with cream cheese
-boiled eggs stuffed with cream cheese
-brown windsor soup with- yes, you've guessed it- a dollop of cream cheese in the middle.

Are you sensing a theme?

taffetacat · 14/06/2010 11:36

tethersend - maybe Philadelphia sponsored it

Melba toast is brilliantly 70's along with that kind of pinky chicken liver pate and a twee garnish on the side

I also remember a sort of baked avocado mush thing

The other thing my mum used to do was a hard boiled egg thing with the yolks taken out and mushed up with mayo and black pepper and then seived back into the whites holes with prawns round the side. I guess the non prawn lovers could have it with some lettuce. Iceberg, natch.

tethersend · 14/06/2010 11:38

You would think so- but no, it was in an article by a French chef in one of London's top restaurants

Don't forget some sprigs of parsley! And a bottle of Mateus Rose.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 14/06/2010 11:47

Oh yeah! deviled eggs

hard boiled eggs, sliced in half, take out yolks, dump in a ton of mayonnaise, put back in white bits, and sprinkle paprika on top....

AlaskaNebraska · 14/06/2010 11:47

Wasn't avocado 80s?

lucykate · 14/06/2010 11:47

my mum used to do curried eggs a lot in the 70's. hard boiled eggs, halved, scoop out the yolk and mix with mayo and curry powder, the scoop mixture (or pipe for a real 70's look) back into the egg.

AlaskaNebraska · 14/06/2010 11:49

Yes melon an fruit juice. Think vol au vents are canapes

JulesJules · 14/06/2010 11:53

Oh spicy stuffed eggs - I still LOVE those, and the dds love them too - the way my Mum did them. Cut hard boiled eggs in half, remove yolks and mash with mayo and curry powder to taste, pile back into whites, sprinkle with pinch of cayenne pepper. Serve retrotastically on bed of lettuce decorated with radish 'roses' and tomato 'flowers'. Groovy.

JulesJules · 14/06/2010 11:54

x posts, lucykate !

blinder · 14/06/2010 11:56

Has anyone said pineapple and cheese sticks??

lucykate · 14/06/2010 12:00

jj my mum's favorite cook book was this one
it's full of 70's recipes.
