certain races prefering certain meats?

OTTMummA · 04/06/2010 10:37

I have just started working again, in a food retail enviornement and i have noticed that people of certain races prefer a certain product containing a meat, and i can actually 95% of the time guess exactly what they are going to choose.
ive never really noticed this before and was wondering if it has always been this way or is a new thing, or a random coincidence happening where i work?
am very curious to find any info on this so any input would be great.

"Why is everyone getting at the OP for discussing cultural differences?"

Because she cannot differentiate between culture and race.

The use of the word 'race' implies that there is a genetic predisposition to a certain type of food, regardless of cultural context. This would be an extremely inflammatory thing to post.

Giving the OP the benefit of the doubt, if she means cultural preference, then it's a bit of a no-brainer really and not much of a discussion- people prefer the food they have been brought up with.

Urk, egg and cress should only ever be eaten in private, with the windows open.

maybe cultures was the correct term, its only a small place, family run so i can't really compare with another place as we are the only one, i think i will try and find if any research has been done, scientifically i mean, i find it very interesting.

Maybe you could give some detail on what you have noticed....

catinthehat2 · 04/06/2010 19:32

I think there are many many scientific papers on this subject and you shouldn't have too much trouble Googling it.

There is also a Harvard faculty dealing with this subject. It is the Department of Utterly Vague and Nonsensical Crapology. You might need to contact the senior academic staff if you can't get hold of these papers. Advise you to contact Professor Iggy Noramus, or Professor T Werp, either of whom would be gald to assist in your quest for knowledge.

well the owner has added some new stuff on the menu for summer, and tbh a lot of it hasn't been ordered, and when i suggest it to people, some act horrified that i would even suggest it/ or pull faces, one lady told me quite angry way that she doesn't eat that ( pork , i apologised and she ended up having exactly what she always has.
there have been quite a few other instances like this with the other staff aswell.
We are under pressure slightly to keep offering these new meals etc( its not working ) and i was thinking of giving a few menu ideas to the owner based on what the favourites at the moment are, but less bulky IYKWIM.

catinthehat2, I think a bit of wee just came out, and it appears to be your fault.

HurleySatOnMe · 04/06/2010 19:38

OP you are either taking the piss or are a little bit dim

HippyGalore · 04/06/2010 19:59

If there was preferences based on our genes, I can't actually see why that would be offensive - OP didn't say "X people only eat Y, can I stop them coming to my shop by serving Z." I think it is fairly well recognised that people of Eastern Asian descent are considerably more likely to be lactose intolerant and therefore less likely to pick the cheese sarnie. Subjectively I know my Indian friends who have grown up with spicier food than I did can handle hot tastes more (nurture obviously), but as we identify the genes that confer super-taster status it is quite likely they will vary by population and could have an effect on our choices.

I have also heard the hypothesis that the reason some people thrive on Aitkins and some people get really ill could be down to the dietary habits of our ancestors - I thought it interesting and not offensive to anyone (though perhaps my being Scottish would put me in the group with the most potential to be offended, so I wouldn't notice).

MrsBadger · 04/06/2010 20:08

ok so come on OTT

hit us with some specifics

is it a burger bar? a pub? a tea shop?

what are the most popular dishes?

what are the new dishes you're meant to be pushing?

OTTMummA · 04/06/2010 20:36

yes i am not very educated about different cultures, but i don't view them in a negative way, i am very interested in what ive noticed and am thinking of ways i can help the buisness!
I feel actually a little dim about these matters, and it affects my self confidence talking to people about it, thats why i thought i would come here as it would save me some embarresment in RL, but thanks for making me feel worse.
I have probably worded things wrongly, but i had no intention of causing this reaction.
