Does such a thing exist? Iced black coffee makes me gag but I really, really like need caffeine during the day. It doesn't necessarily have to be sweet-tasting, but preferably not as vile as cold black coffee.

sparkly water with elderflower is lovely

BoysAreLikeDogs · 24/05/2010 19:02

oh sorry, no caffeine

LynetteScavo · 24/05/2010 19:03

Just have sparkling water and take some pro plus caffeine pills

BananaPudding · 24/05/2010 19:03

I love iced tea. I do a double strength black tea, pour over a pitcher full of ice and top up with more ice when that's melted. Can add lemon. I sometimes sweeten with agave nectar, it's nice and low on the glycemic index.

Mmm tea.

does red bull have sugar or aspartame??
Iced tea? that has sugar and/or sweeteners in it I think though

TheCappster · 24/05/2010 19:04

My vote would be for normal coffee and lots of iced water.

In separate receptacles, of course

theyoungvisiter · 24/05/2010 19:04

what about iced coffee, only with milk? I don't like black iced coffee but milky is fine.

Or iced tea?

bran · 24/05/2010 19:04

I do love elderflower, and I'll add it to my Ocado order despite the lack of caffeine. I couldn't drink much though as it usually has loads of sugar in the cordial.

iced milky coffee is delicious though. Iced green tea is also good although not so caffeiney.

Water with pro-plus?

BananaPudding · 24/05/2010 19:11

Well, iced tea would only have sweeteners in it if you put them there. If you make it yourself, it can be completely unsweetened. Like I said, I sweeten it with agave if I sweeten it at all.

Am not talking about iced tea mixes

bran · 24/05/2010 19:17

I don't drink milk (unless I actually want to fart incessantly and do explosive poos ) so can't do iced latte.

I'll add Pro Plus to my order too, I've never tried it before.

I wonder if iced Lady Grey would be good. I might give it a try.

Have I shocked you all and killed my own thread with TMI about lactose intolerance?

Thank you for your suggestions so far, sorry for repulsing you.

BananaPudding · 25/05/2010 00:02

Lol no, not repulsed as I have the same problem. I do soy lattes

Out of curiosity, is agave very available in the UK? It's just occurred to me that it might be common here because of our proximity to Mexico.

bran · 25/05/2010 10:25

Yes, you can buy agave syrup in the supermarket. It's not as good as the GI score would suggest though. I read up on it when I was diagnosed with diabetes and there is some evidence that it does still cause a spike in blood sugar, just not within the timescale that they use to calculate a GI score. So the advice to diabetics is to use it in moderation as they would with sugar.

why do you "need" all this caffeine? snot good for you you know....

PersonalClown · 25/05/2010 10:36

Bran, you might want to try Asda's own version of coke zero.

No Aspartame or sugar in it and I still get my caffeine fix. Tastes fab too!

bran · 26/05/2010 16:29

No, I'm sure it's not good for me, nothing is. I need it in the school holidays because I'm naturally low-energy and introverted and DS is immensely high-energy, extrovert and attention seeking. If I can't keep up to his speed he tends to cause chaos. In term time there isn't so much of a problem as it's just me and DD, and I'm usually fine all day with just my breakfast cup of coffee.

I'll check out Asda's cola PC, thanks. It contains sucralose which hasn't been around for very long and therefore hasn't had much independent research done on it but it will be good for a desperate measure.

Today was just about the right level of buzz. I had a double espresso made into an americano with breakfast, two Pro Plus tablets before we went out at about 9am and another americano on the way to the playground at about 10.30am. I didn't feel like a wet rag until about 4pm which is pretty good for me.

I gave up diet coke (was addicted) about 2 months ago. I gave up due to a thread I read on here about aspartame, speficially wrt mental health effects and the fact aspartame could cause weight gain. My mood swings and depression have imporved immeasurably, and I have also lost a stone, so I really recommend it.

I drink more coffee now, but I really missed the fizz of coke. I drink Sainso's el cheapo squash (no aspartame) mixed with fizzy water. No cals (or barely) and still as fizzy. A lot cheaper than coke as well.

Proplus is a bit wierd though - can make you feel a bit jittery. So if I were you I would just have some strong coffee and see if you can get on with that initiallu.

strandedatsea · 26/05/2010 16:58

Cold fizzy water and a big chunk of good quality dark chocolate (I gather chocolate contains caffeine and the right chocolate in moderation is meant to be very good for you).

I read that Aspartame thread too and although I haven't totally given up Coke Zero, it has at least made me think about it.

bran · 26/05/2010 17:32

The trouble with strong coffee is that it takes time to make and also time to drink. So often I make a cup and then don't get a chance to drink it before I go out, sometimes I don't even finish making it. The advantage of a cold drink is that you just open the fridge and glug it down. A can is also quite hand to throw into a bag for later. Also if we ever get a proper summer it's not much fun drinking hot coffee once that day has heated up.

I already have G&B dark chocolate now and then, I don't think there's really enough caffeine in it to matter.

I didn't feel that jittery with the Pro Plus GOML, and it has the advantage that I can just chase some down with water before I walk out the door, when I wouldn't have time to make coffee.
