Is there actually any food you can't freeze?

Moving on from 'can I freeze a fruitcake?' I thought we could just cut to the chase.

Okay, I know strawberries go mushy and three times cooked prawns are not and good idea- but there actually any foodstuff that can't be safely or practically frozen?

My mum currently has in her deepfreeze a whole round of camembert and a dead owl waiting to be stuffed both of which seem to be faring rather well, considering....

withorwithoutyou · 12/05/2010 20:30

Green beans.

Unless you blanche them first, apparently.

I don't know what blanching is.

SuSylvester · 12/05/2010 20:31

can i freeze cream

cyb · 12/05/2010 20:31

yes it will be ice cream

you nob

BallpointPen · 12/05/2010 20:34

Not single but double cream can be frozen. Milk is fine in the freezer, I always have a couple of pints on stand by in the freezer.

Blocks of cheddar don't do well, end up dry when de-frosted.

SilveryMoon · 12/05/2010 20:34

Blanching is part cooking.

I'llbe watching this thread with interest. I always wonder if I can freeze my extra's from dinner, but am not really sure of what I can't freeze

mashed potato is disgusting after freezing, it goes all bitty.

MrsDinky · 12/05/2010 20:37

Cucumber, cooked eggs. Raw eggs too presumably?

VoulezVouzCrochezAvecJACK · 12/05/2010 20:37

Unless you buy aunt bessie's frozen mashed potato, as I found in MIL's freezer....

cyb · 12/05/2010 20:38

nigella freezes egg whites for mereingues and says her freezer resembles a sperm bank

bibbitybobbityhat · 12/05/2010 20:39

You can freeze double cream or whipping cream but not single cream.

bibbitybobbityhat · 12/05/2010 20:40

Why would you freeze uncooked pasta?

DilysPrice · 12/05/2010 20:41

You can freeze raw egg whites according to Nigella at her most Domestic Goddessy.

Bananas can be frozen and then used for baking (although their skin goes completely black which is unnerving). If I have one that's too old to eat I put it in the freezer until I fancy making banana bread etc. You can also allegedly shove them straight into a smoothie without defrosting them which sounds like quite a good idea (bloody Nigella again).

brockleybelle · 12/05/2010 20:42

Why does frozen milk look like wee?

expatinscotland · 12/05/2010 20:44

parmesan cheese doesn't freeze well.

bananas can definitely be frozen, but probably best to use them in baking or smoothies.

wukter · 12/05/2010 20:44

mushrooms. They come out all rubbery.

ButterPie · 12/05/2010 20:44

You can freeze uncooked pasta (not dried, obv, but the soft kind). And milk. I have both in my freezer AT THIS VERY MOMENT.

TrillianAstra · 12/05/2010 20:44

Uncooked fresh lovingly handmade pasta? Or just dry spaghetti?

Everything can be frozen, but it might not be very nice when you unfreeze it.

ButterPie · 12/05/2010 20:45

Leek and potato soup goes a bit odd.

nannyl · 12/05/2010 20:47

i have home made pasta in my freezer... we make a double bath so some for now and some for later

homogonised milk freezes ok, but if you buy non homogonised milk (ie waitrose ORGANIC milk is not homogonised but most other brands of milk are) then it will not freeze properly
