i mentioned the basics of this programme to a friend and at the end of a bit of a heated discussion concluded they didn't care about animal welfare and are just bothered about how much they spend in the supermarket. and that got me very cross as i have clearly misjudged this person. they are not empathic or compassionate. no, they are just tight (though we manage to buy organic and farm shop food for half their weekly budget for food).

I don't think you can necessarily assume that milk from a milkman is from happy cows in a field, is it a small local dairy that delivers?

Mojomummy · 02/08/2005 19:31

Good old Mumsnetters !!

I've been wanting to know where I can pick my own fruit & now I have a link to a local farm & the farmers markets - FAB !!

No more bloody 'big 4 supermarkets' for me.

PS I think Waitrose organic milk tastes the best - buy full fat for DD & semi skimmed for us - it's got the cleanest freshest taste

Anyone know where I can buy organic or non bagged watercress ?

swiperfox · 02/08/2005 19:33

Have you tried growing any?

alux · 02/08/2005 19:45

find your own nearest farmer's market.

and the nearest me:

Ooh yes, DD LOVES raspberries. So this year I bought a plant & so far she has had 3 raspberries & the birds have had 1 !!!.

Great Grandma is much more sucessful & sends down rapsberries/gooseberries/carrots/beetroot
/onions etc

I also have mint in my garden for mojitos & I've grown chilies too, but, again nothing substantial.

Not really getting it am I ?!

We do have a compost bin though, where all my organic( from the supermarket ) peelings & egg shells go into.

Will be making a concerted effort for next year...appreciate any suggestions

Tortington · 02/08/2005 21:20

no am not sure what the dairy is.

TwoIfBySea · 02/08/2005 22:03

For all Scottish mumsnetters there is this to help find alternates.

Am definitely going to go that step further and do as much as I can via the farmers markets. And there is a place near where I live called the Jam Kitchen selling, well jams and honey as well as seasonal fruit and potatoes. There has to be a way to wean myself off the supermarkets!

Mojomummy · 05/08/2005 11:01

alux just tried to access those links & msg comes back saying page can not be found. Can you double check the please ?

Furball · 05/08/2005 11:49

If you just manually type in the address that alux has put it's fine

Morgan · 05/08/2005 12:12

If you are interested in food issues then read Felicity Lawrence "Not on the label" and you will never shop in a big 4 supermarket again! Deals with the issues in the prog and a lot more.

Since reading the book i have severly changed my shopping habits. Have an organic fruit and veg box which is fab from Rivernene organics, make own bread in the breadmaker with organic ingredients and shop at Waitrose - i do believe they are better than the reat. Tesco are evil - do not shop there!! Also buy as much organic as i can.

alux · 05/08/2005 12:45

aaahhh, mojomummy, I am using firefox and microsoft explorer on my computer right now and I think that I must have been on mumsnet on one and opened the other to look for the webpages.

i've noticed in the past that they don't seem to like each other. [less than surprised emoticon.]

Mojomummy · 05/08/2005 20:14

Very proud to say I've been to the True Food Co-op in Reading, which seems pretty fab !

Variety of organic fruit & veg, grains, washing & cleaning products & some yummy chocs.

My bill came to £17.63 & this included choc of £2.09, olives at 99p & 1/2 banana cake £1.50. Spent less than at supermarkets

For anyone in Reading the link is

swiperfox · 05/08/2005 20:16

Where abouts in Reading is it mojo? I've lived there all my life and never heard of it!!!

Must admit, I miss the variety of grocers in reading - esp with all the west indian food........mmmmmmmmmmmm lol

Mojomummy · 05/08/2005 20:57

Hi Swiperfox, it's in the Whitely Wood community centre. they visit 2x a month. They also visit Woodley, Newtown, Tilehurst, Goring on Thames.

I also understand a fellow mumsnetter is somthing to do with an organic shop in Pangbourne.

ThePrisoner · 13/08/2005 00:33

Have been on our hols so very disappointed not to see the second programme. As a very committed organic veggie, I want to run round and round and shout "I told you so!" to all the people that have had a go at me over the years!!!
