Well Ive bought organic for years and couldnt buy an organic chicken at the weekend because everyone else had decided to buy them. Hopefully most people will retunr to their turkey twizzlers soon and leave the good quality stuff for me

Serious point being made though - can supply of organic produce meet demand?

TwinSetAndPearls · 01/08/2005 19:44

Went to sainsburys today and it looks as if everyone had been watching as there was only one piece of organic chicken left which I had to pinch from under someones nose!

When paying for my shopping the lady at the till laughed and said another channel four viewer?? as my basket was full of organic purchases.

Absolutely disgusted once again! Did you see the dairy cows???

I am going to try, from this weekend coming, to buy as little as i possibly can from the supermarket from now on.

Who wants to join me?? I would like to do an 'experiment' and post exactly what i buy, what is available and the prices so that any of you interested can see the differences. I want to find out exactly how much we are being conned by being led to believe that it is cheaper to go the supermarket than the local butcher/baker/grocer and market. I also want to see if it makes a difference to dd (3.7)(behaviour/concentration etc) It would be good if a load of us could do it and post what we have bought, prices, what meals we made etc. I would also like to try organic ranges as well and post the differences.

Anyone fancy it?

expatinscotland · 01/08/2005 21:08

I'm up for it, swiper! DH is just off to ASDA, but the only food items on the list are a can of Percol, organic milk, organic lemons and sugar. The list is just bits and bobs like kitchen towels and loo roll.

We are going to buy ALL of our food from the farmer's market this Saturday - we've still got enough from our last run a week ago Saturday.

Who else wants to join?

TwoIfBySea · 01/08/2005 21:13

Has it gone too far do you think? What I mean is that the whole way of shopping for food, how the farmers supply it seemed to be no turning back.

I have always bought organic milk though, and to start swiperfoxes idea off it is never more than 5-10p dearer and yes, it is tastier. Excellent for milkshakes and the like.

I wonder if buying organic from the supermarkets though won't make them start to mess around with how that is produced. Need - to - get - organised!!!! Got to start making an effort.

Blackduck · 01/08/2005 21:15

I've been trying to do this since reading 'Shopped' - I buy my meat from a farmers market and my (mis-shappen) veg from the local Indian shop (great range and cheap - garlic at 9p anyone?).
Will try to keep it up...

swiperfox · 01/08/2005 21:17

TIBS - I was really shocked at what the farmers were saying about the way they are ripped off by the supermarkets. I was also amazed that when supermarkets do 'buy one get one free' its the farmers who lose money, not the supermarkets!

lilaclotus · 01/08/2005 21:18

yes, i think i will think twice about picking up a fruit/veg bogof now.

swiperfox · 01/08/2005 21:19

Did you see the kids parrot cafe juice as well? - more sugar than a can of coke !!!!!

swiperfox · 01/08/2005 21:21

Hi expat I've started another thread in food for us to post on. I will get a few bits this week but will do my main shop on Friday and start properly then - will keep bumping though to get a load of us it hopefully!!

RTKangaMummy · 01/08/2005 21:27

How do you find local farmers market?

OP posts:
swiperfox · 01/08/2005 21:30

Hiya Kanga - the ones i've ever seen have just been advertised as you drive around - boards on the side of the road type thing....

swiperfox · 01/08/2005 21:33

National list of farmers markets

RTKangaMummy · 01/08/2005 21:40

I buy very little from the supermarkets now, mostly use health food shop, green grocers and butchers for food and the market for cleaning stuff. I don't think it is any more money than visiting supermarket.

I sometimes pop into our local sainsbury on my way home to get something for tea and don't have time to go into the village. But I try and make sure I buy fairtrade or organic. I seemed to spend more in sainsbury's than I would do in the village but that may have been because I was paying for it all in one shop rather than lots of littler bills

Shout · 01/08/2005 22:23

I didn't like what I saw and I too amd keen to try local from now on.

There needs to be some sort of website set up so farmers can highlight the not so pretty food stuffs are available we could buy at a reasonable price instaed of the items rotting.
Surely it wouldn't take that long before Tesco notice via the club card that meet and veg is missing from the regular weekly shop.

Only thing I do like is paying by credit card not sure you can do this at farm shops?

Shout · 01/08/2005 22:27

whoops ...sorry about the typo's below.
Plus, just incase my english teacher was around checking my spelling, it should be 'Meat and veg'!!!!

MrsFogi · 01/08/2005 22:29

Seeing the big misshapen potatoes brought back lovely memories of stuffed baked potatoes years ago - I really miss being able to choose between different shapes and sizes.

expatinscotland · 01/08/2005 23:00

They were such beautiful potatoes, too. I wish there were a way for people to buy such good, edible veg.

flashingnose · 02/08/2005 14:03

farm shopping

I'm never setting foot in Tesco's again

I have visited a number of factories over the years including chicken and cow abbattoirs, the result is I'm now a vegetarian.

Feel I always have to justify it though "you don't eat meat like theres something wrong with me" and I say "well if you have seen what I have over the years you wouldn't eat meat either" to which I usually get the reply "don't I don't want to know" I find it crazy people don't want to know what they are putting in their mouths.

Tortington · 02/08/2005 18:10
