So MIL and SFIL are coming next week

Saltire · 06/04/2010 10:22

Neither of them will eat anything with even a hint of spice - so no curries, chilli etc.
SFIL is allergic to pulses and beans, onions and peas, as well as what MIL calls cheap sausages (according to her the only ones he can eat are Halls, which are cheaper than the average butcher).
I ahve a couple of nice pasta recipes but they both have chilli int ehm so that's out the window. I have a leg of lamb for Sunday, but MIL informs us she doens't eat lamb, so am tempted to buy a birds eye chicken thing for her.
They won't eat pork apart from bacon - well SFIL does, but MIL won't. No eggs either unless fried

I need some inspiration otherwise it's going to be
spag bol
mince and tatties/shepherds pie
chicken in a sauce (has to be knorr chicken tonight sauce)(because they won't know what ingredients I might put in)
and now I'm stuck.

Do a beeg instead of leg of lamb? Or a chicken? I don't eat spices much, or sausages and I hate beans

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 06/04/2010 10:24

beeg = beef

Saltire · 06/04/2010 10:26

I would do beef, but I already have this huge leg of lamb in the freezer, I don't buy big joints very often, just because it was on offer and asked DH what he preffered and he said lamb

I ahve some lovely recipes that we all enjoy as a family, but it means either doing 2 lots of meals, or eating their type of food for a week,a dn my mind hass gone a bit blank

Saltire · 06/04/2010 10:27

OH I have braising steak, I could do that in the slow cooker one day

I would cook whatever YOU want to, then treat them exactly as you would a fussy kid -

"no pudding if you can't eat that! etc etc etc."

They are grown-ups, and you are the host!

And go out for some meals, takes the pressure off - even if it is only a Greggs!

(How're you feeling now btw Saltire?)

I am ok, a lot clamer, although have had a migraine for 4 days and a flare up, so mentally am ok.

herbie - she won't eat chips unless they are cooked in a fryer and I don't have one.
She won't eat potatoe wedges either, unless they come out of a packet with McCain written on the front. DH makes his own ones but no they aren't right

Doodleydoo · 06/04/2010 10:36

I do not envy you! What a shag! Was going to suggest somethings but they either have garlic, lemon or peas and onions involved so am assuming they won't be ok. I would just do sausages then for them!

MIL won't take cheese either, such as brie or mozzarella, even if it's cooked. The only cheese she will eat is a very mild cheddar

mnistooaddictive · 06/04/2010 10:40

Make your pasta dich and then sparate it into two dishes - one with chilli and one without!

FakePlasticTrees · 06/04/2010 10:55

will they eat fish? If so, some salmon steaks cooked in white wine, butter, lemon juice/slices and dill (wrap up in a little foil parcel) served with sweet potato mash (or normal mash if that's too racy for them) and wilted spinich or other greens.

(for a quick sauce, add cream and a tiny bit of cornflour to the liquid, heating through for a min before serving)

Saltire · 06/04/2010 10:57

SFIL will eat fish, MIL won't touch it, unless it's birds eye stuff in a box

OP posts:
compo · 06/04/2010 10:58

I wouldn't get anything in

then at about 5pm say 'what shall we do for dinner, what would you like'

and then just go to nearest supermarket for whatever they say

or to the chippie

Saltire · 06/04/2010 11:03

I am doing lasagne on Saturday night, with garlic bread, but am using a jar of white lasagne sauce (will make the mince part myself) as neither of them will eat home made white/cheese sauce.

has she always been like this??? can you get DH to give you alist of meals he had as a child? (who's happy to have frozen fish but not fresh???)

actually - tell DH he's in charge for the week...

MrsToffeeCrisp · 06/04/2010 11:05

How about some baked potatoes one night? Not very exciting but make a big salad too and let people put their own toppings on.

Saltire · 06/04/2010 11:11

She won't eat pork, only bacon because "you don't know where it's come from" Er a pig?

She won't eat meat from a proper butcher, because "you don't know what they add to it", yet will eat Birds Eye chicken, and Halls sausages.
On the rare occasions I do get meat from a butcher (instead of supermarket) I just say i got it in tesco/Asda

OP posts:
compo · 06/04/2010 11:13

she sounds rude
just serve up what you normally eat
don't ask her or get into a debate about it
if she's hungry she can always eat bread
why are you going to such lengths?

FakePlasticTrees · 06/04/2010 11:13

steak and chips? (expensive but needs must)

toad in the hole telling her they are the sausages she likes (buy whatever you want, bet she can't tell)

roast chicken.

beef hotpot.

something involving chicken, pasta, pesto, cream and peppers

chicken and mushroom pie (use your knorr for the sauce, a bit grim compared to making it yourself, but needs must)

bacon sarnies????

Saltire · 06/04/2010 11:14

Becasue she's MIL,a nd I feel that I have to be the dutiful DIL. In fact, you know what, you're right, I'll cook what I like and if she doesn't eat it then she goes without. Tough.

OP posts:
compo · 06/04/2010 11:21

the thing is if you always pander to her she'll always be like that
if you stick to your guns she'll realise you mean business, lol

MaMight · 06/04/2010 11:22

Gracious. They sound terribly rude. Big fuss about nothing.

Allergies are fair enough, and a real dislike for something can be accomodated, but only eating a certain brand of something? Nonsense.

Oh dear, I am not really answering the OP am I?

Shepherds pie?
Breakfast for supper?
Pizza?
Beefburgers in buns with a choice of gubbins to put in?
Soup?
Flan / tart / quiche?
Risotto?
Couscous and roasted veg tagine thingy?

clam · 06/04/2010 11:31

What do they eat at home?

The good news is, of course, that if they're such a pain to host, then you won't feel too guilty about not inviting them again for a few years!
