What do you use your food processor for and how often do you use it???

My mum has really kindly offered to buy me one as a house warming present and I've never had one and so my cooking has evolved to not need one other than very occasionally. There are things I would love one for like making coleslaw for example but DH thinks it will just sit on the side and clutter up the place. Is he right??

Blender bit makes cocktails

Whizzy bit makes breadcrumbs and cuts up onion v small for meatballs. Would do slicing for coleslaw if that bit worked.

MaureenMLove · 28/03/2010 21:01

I use mine to mince up my ginger nuts for the base of a cheese cake and to make a spinach dip. That's it. So that would be about 4 times a year then, since I only ever make those two things during the BBQ season!

SixtyFootDoll · 28/03/2010 21:03

I use mine about three times a year to chop up onions really small.

SusieCarmichael · 28/03/2010 21:03

smoothies milkshakes and breadcrumbs only but i use it a lot for these things

SixtyFootDoll · 28/03/2010 21:03

oh and to make breadcrumbs

SixtyFootDoll · 28/03/2010 21:04

Oh trill - just realised I said the same as you

SusieKettles · 28/03/2010 21:05

Most baking, if I have to grate a lot of cheese, coleslaw, grating beetroot for borscht, making houmous.

hoxtonchick · 28/03/2010 21:06

i made a cake in mine today, make pesto most weeks, & soup. great for breadcrumbs. i use it most days i reckon. get a magimix.

MrsTriangle · 28/03/2010 21:06

oh of course - humous - i tried it in a blender once and it was a disaster.

Does your live out on the side or in a cupboard?

OP posts:
SusieKettles · 28/03/2010 21:07

Oh, and I use it about once a week probably.

Got it as a present and probably wouldn't have shelled out the cash for it myself, but now it's here it's pretty useful. And I keep it in a cupboard because we've got about 2cm of worktop.

helyg · 28/03/2010 21:07

I use mine quite a lot, at least 3 or 4 times a week. I use it to make cakes, hoummus, smoothies, breadcrumbs, dough, chopping veg, juicing fruit, grating cheese etc etc.

MrsTriangle · 28/03/2010 21:09

oooh juicing fruit? How does it do that? Don't you need a proper juicer?

What do you all do with all these bread crumbs you're producing?!?!?

Will it chop carrots in to crudite type sticks??

Pastry, cakes, breadcrumbs, bread dough, yorkshire pudding mix, blender for soup.

I love mine, its someting that you can start using and it will just make every thing better and quicker.

Fleecy · 28/03/2010 21:10

Mine has a processor and separate liquidiser. I use the processor for baking and for breadcrumbs.

I use the liquidiser for blending home-made sauces so I cen get extra veg into the kids without them knowing Also for smoothies.

If you have a dishwasher, get one you can bung in there so you don't have to wash it up separately by hand.

FabIsGettingThere · 28/03/2010 21:11

I used it loads when my kids were babies for their purees.

I use it now for baking and use it a good few times a week.

MrsTriangle · 28/03/2010 21:11

I just make my cakes in a big bowl with a wooden spoon and use a hand whisk if I need to. rather old fashioned by the sounds of it....!

Beetroot borscht sounds lovely - I'll google it now!

It probably would MrsT if you have the right blade.

I found the instruction booklet the other day after it being awol for about 5 years and was amazed at the things it could do if I only shelled out for a gajillion different attachments (think the juicer was one of them).

RubiMama · 28/03/2010 21:14

I use mine almost everyday for making fresh juices, and 2-3 times a weeks for humous, pesto, fishcakes, grating, and ginding nuts for cakes and things like that. Lives on worktop. I second getting a magimix. I heart mine!

MrsTriangle · 28/03/2010 21:20

oh crikey - which attachments are a must have.
Do you have the juicer one and is it as good as a dedicated juicer?

I'm looking at the magimix 5200....

MrsTriange - DH bought me one as a present one year... I use it to liquidise soups and make breadcrumbs. Like you, I use the electric whisk to make cskes if necessary, whip egg whites etc., and those magic choppers you can buy are great and so easy to clean.

If I had to buy a new one, I would buy the smallest, cheapest one available - how expensive should one's breadcrumb maker be!

SusieKettles · 28/03/2010 21:28

I've got the compact one (3200 or whatever the model was 5 years ago - I think mines maybe 3100) so the 5200 probably comes with lots of extra things included.

I have to say I've never used more than the normal blade, mini blade and the grater. I've got a bread machine so never use the dough hook.

The mini bowl (comes as standard with mini blade) is great for chopping small amounts. Makes great houmous with one can of chickpeas plus the tahini paste etc.

janeite · 28/03/2010 21:34

I use mine for:
pesto - at least twice a month;
hoummus - maybe once a month or so;
soup - around once very couple of weeks as usually I make ones that don't need blending;
mango lassi - a couple of times a month; grating cheese when I need a lot of it as I hate grating cheese.

So - it is invaluable but not an everyday thing here.

LauraIngallsWilder · 28/03/2010 21:37

Would some of you mind comingover here and telling me which food processor is the one to own

It would be appreciated!

Ta muchly

ravenAK · 28/03/2010 21:41

I use mine for:

curry paste, when I fancy making my own

Yorkshire pudding batter

crumble or anything pastry like

whizzing stale bread into crumbs, to freeze & use on top of pasta bakes etc

soup

Probably once a week or so! It was in daily use when the dc were at the puree stage. I still wouldn't be without it, but only ever use the basic blade & couldn't really justify a cool Magimix, much though I'd love to...

differentID · 28/03/2010 21:50

I use mine to do breadcrumbs, soups, getting pastry to "breadcrumb" level, pureeing swede and carrot when doing a root veg mash. I have a mini-chopper for onions and garlic.
