Very very very very limited diet - help!

waitingforbedtime · 11/03/2010 18:35

Ok so am vegetarian so no meat or fish.

I dont like spicy food or nuts.

I cant eat ANY cheese or pasta because whilst Im pregnant for some reason it gives me horrendous stomach pains.

I am avoiding the usual not allowed in pregnancy things quite strictly as am paranoid.

I am soooooooooo bored of eating potatoes and bread and thats pretty much it (aside from fruit etc obv) - can you help inspire me?

I would happily live on salads but what can I have that fit all the requirements above that isnt just lettuce, tomatoes, onion and erm - what else?

Would really appreciate any help...

and, this may sound mean, but you really need to stop being picky!!! think of your health and that of your child!

there are certain things that I don't particularly like, but being on a limited diet I MAKE myself eat because i know it's good for me!

pesto recipe is something along the lines of:

one big packet of basil
dash of sea salt
dash black pepper
garlic clove (or 2, or none if you don't like it!)
small handful walnuts
tbsp nutritional yeast (optional, but good for B vitamins)
good glug of olive oil

blitz in a food processor or with a hand blender. you're aiming to get a thick paste, if too thick then add more oil

do you like rice pudding? am guessing not if you don't like rice in general, but just in case, I nearly always add good couple of tablespoons of ground almonds to a rice pudding.

you can do the same with porridge too, if you like that?

thisisyesterday · 11/03/2010 19:15

oof actually i had a lovely recipe for a salad that had something like:

cos lettuce

tin of beans (any you fancy, think it had kidney beans but you could substitute for pretty much anything, or chick peas)

big avocado cubed

hard boiled egg, quartered

and some lemon and coriander dressing (english provender co do a lovely one)

waitingforbedtime · 11/03/2010 19:17

Sorry I do understand you can make scrambled eggs am not simpleton - more meant how to make nice sandwiches / salads involving eggs - shouldve made myself clearer maybe.

I do like rice pudding - good idea re the almonds.

I have honey and sultanas on porridge usually but maybe could add almond too - thanks!

what about stir frys too? quick and easy

seashore · 11/03/2010 19:20

Agree that tofu is poisonous stuff! But the thing is, if you don't want to eat meat than you wind up having to eat what the meat eats! ie. soya.

My veggie diet gave me IBS. Really it might be timefor you to stop. I was all about the ethics of it, but for 9 months maybe just think about the ethics of producing a healthy baby.

Don't want to sound like your mum but you wouldn't know yourself after a chicken meal!

I couldn't manage most of my veggie food anyway, pasta, nut burgers, etc it all gave me the runs. Too much vegetables will do that to anyone. My dh was fine as a veggie, his system could endure, but after the same length as a veggie he eats meat now too.

By the way, i hate the term veggie but it's just too long to type.

Bean stew?

Tin of toms
2 tins of beans (any will do, ie kidney beans/adzuki beans, flagelot, cannelini etc)
2 cloves garlic
3 bay leaves
1 onion finely chopped
salt and pepper to taste
1 fresh chilli finely chopped or about a half to one teaspoon of chilli flakes
veg stock/bouillon

heat pan and lightly fry onions and garlic till onions are transparent.
Add tomatoes, bay leaves, chilli and simmer for a few mins.
Add stock and then simmer gently for about 25 mins til it starts to thicken a little
Add beans, simmer for another ten minutes.
Serve with green salad and bread if you want it.

itsmeitsmeolord · 11/03/2010 19:31

ffs leave the girl alone! She is a veggie, it's fine, she just wanted some recipes/ideas, not a blardy lecture and coersion into eating meat.

seashore · 11/03/2010 19:40

hey there, if you mean me, I wasn't lecturing, just sharing my experience since I was too was veggie for 15 yrs and it can be tough. Isn't what this forum is all about?

seashore · 11/03/2010 19:49

Also itsmeitsmeolord, its' interesting, isn't it, that on mumsnet talk anything can be discussed, any detail of childbirth, bad relationships etc, but women and food, is a no, no. Not allowed be honest and say you might actually be wasting your time sitting there hungry.

itsmeitsmeolord · 11/03/2010 19:52

I actually meaNT others as well as you.

How the fuck do you know she is hungry. She isn't, she said she is bored with her diet not starving.

No one said you can't discuss women and food, you are lecturing and now you are also being a bit of a tit.

seashore · 11/03/2010 19:54

Wouldn't really know what to say to such a hostile post. Excuse me.

waitingforbedtime · 11/03/2010 19:56

itsmeitsmeolord - cheers recipe looks good and appreciate your comments too.

Fwiw - I am not hungry, I just wanted ideas of how to eat healthily and within the unfortunate parameters.

seashore - I know you probably werent meaning anything in a bad way. I dont get the comment about women and food though?
