Cheese ponces, walk this way!

The 'favourite cheese' thread has inspired me to try a new cheese every week to broaden my tolerance for obscure cheese poncery

I started the ball rolling with tetilla, which was my first 'new' cheese - a rustic pear shaped cheese from the Galicia region of Spain. Was firm on the outside but quite soft in the middle, a bit like Brie, but had a mild creamy taste, a bit like Saint Paulin.

But what should I try next? Any ideas please? The more obscure the better! (I have a well-stocked Waitrose nearby )

I did this after that thread. Next time I was in Sainsbo's I picked a cheese I had never had before and I love it.

It was parlick fell sheeps cheese - really tasty & salty.

I am going to have to buy more now

pushmepullyou · 04/03/2010 17:09

I love the parlick fell sheep's cheese. in fact I love most cheese

Have a browse here for inspiration. I got sent a gift box when DD was born and I was allowed a free rein!

StirlingIsFedUpOfTheSnow · 04/03/2010 17:51

Oooh, pushme, a cheese porn website

May have to order something now.

Whoamireally · 04/03/2010 18:44

Yum, my mouth is watering after looking at the parlick fell.....

This thread is very exciting for me. I amdef a cheese slut- bought four types at Waitrose today.

Of course exotic is good, but don't forget the excellent traditionally made Cheddars that Waitrose stocks- I love Quickes and Keen's. And there's also Lincolnshire Poacher (try that with some quince cheese).I imagine if there is really such a thing as mad cheese induced dreams, Lincolnshire Poacher would produce something pretty psychadelic!

BigBadMummy · 04/03/2010 21:36

mmmm to cheese porn. We go to a restaurant in London purely because they have a cheese trolley with around 30 different cheeses.

Orgasmic

Will be following this thread for people's recommendations.

Whoamireally · 04/03/2010 23:28

Fellow Cheesesluts, have just seen possibly the most exciting cheese ever on the cheese porn site - Gourgandine a la Violette, 'a semi soft mountain cheese flavoured with violets' but which (more importantly) has aphrodisiac properties!!! What more does a Cheeseslut need!

BigBadMum--What's the name of the restaurant? I need to go there!!

June2009 · 06/03/2010 10:54

bigbadmummy which restaurant is it

Whoamireally · 11/03/2010 13:33

Ok, it's obviously just me that wants to play so I will embark on a ill fated solo mission to change the cheese eating habits of the Universe

Today I picked out the cheese with the longest name I have ever seen, in the expectation that a long name = poncey cheese.

I tried Caseificio Alta Langa Bucconcino Di Puri Capra which was a little goats cheese, which looked a bit like a mini brie, and was soft and gooey inside rather than creamy/crumbly. Lovely mellow flavour - slightly sweet - none of the sharpness you sometimes get with goats cheese. Very nice and quite moreish

It really is just me! Is this what it's like writing a blog? Is this turning into My Cheese Blog? OMG. I need a life

Wow Whoamireally , sounds like you're making your way through some gorgeous cheeses. So thanks to your great tip about Waitrose from the other cheese thread I have been reacquainted with my beloved tetilla after years of not being able to get hold it. It was a wonderful moment, so thanks again!!

LouIsOnAHighwayToHell · 15/03/2010 09:59

Mm cheese. We have a fabulous cheese shop on out little high street. I am glad I am not the only one out there who lusts after cheese.

Whoamireally · 15/03/2010 10:36

Fanfare it's my pleasure

So, Lou, come on then, what have you bought this week?

Hi Barry, thanks for sharing! Yarg looks lovely, have you seen the Tornegus? Tempted to try it on the strength of the name.

Am mildly amused by The Cheese Shed's filing system, it's either Cheddar or 'Not Cheddar' Why make things complicated hey?

OK last week's cheese was Ossau Iraty, which is possibly the ponciest cheese ever as it's made from the milk of a single breed of sheep from the Basque region... t'was very nice - creamy, buttery, with a slight twang to it. Worked well in a toasted sandwich too

This week's cheese is Ardrahan which is an Irish semi-soft cheese with a washed rind - could it be a bit like Epoisses? Will report back (assuming anyone is interested!)

Also - cheese fans - Waitrose has an Irish Cheese promotion on the deli counter at the moment. They had a couple of cheeses even I had never heard of including a goat's cheese which looked really good....

migola · 28/03/2010 17:53

appenzeler, love it (prob not that obscure) - nutty hard cheese

helyg · 28/03/2010 21:21

Current favourite cheeses:

preseli
perl las
pont gar

You may be able to spot the influence of the Welsh deli in which I have been shopping...

Whoamireally · 29/03/2010 13:40

Yum yum thanks for the cheese suggestions - particularly like the idea of Baked Pont Gar

Have never heard of appenzeler, will see if (sorry to keep on about them but their cheese selection is second to none!) Waitrose have got some!

Ardrahan was OK - the rind was a bit crusty and, now being under the influence of a cold, couldn't taste all that much My 3 year old (budding cheese ponce) said it was 'a bit pongy'
