Cheese ponces, walk this way!

The 'favourite cheese' thread has inspired me to try a new cheese every week to broaden my tolerance for obscure cheese poncery

I started the ball rolling with tetilla, which was my first 'new' cheese - a rustic pear shaped cheese from the Galicia region of Spain. Was firm on the outside but quite soft in the middle, a bit like Brie, but had a mild creamy taste, a bit like Saint Paulin.

But what should I try next? Any ideas please? The more obscure the better! (I have a well-stocked Waitrose nearby )

am craving some appenzeller now! I think I may have found some in waitrose once, not sure. Anyway you can get the blue/red/silver one which I think is the original, or you can get a black one which is stronger. I love strong cheeses but I think appenzeller works better when it's not so strong. I'd say try the blue/red one first, then try the black. Sorry, am going on a bit aren't I, my mouth is watering. Where do you live whoamireally? If you're in London they do it in La Fromagerie (off Marylebone High St and Highbury). If you're not in London and are visiting one day, I recommend you go there mmmmmmmmm

I bought that cheeses with the mango round it at xmas as well - and the cranberry version. The cranberry one was lush.

Whoamireally · 30/03/2010 19:00

What was it called though? Desperate to try it!

they only had it in at xmas I think

No-one seems to remember what the mango cheese is called Twice it's been mentioned now. I will have to ask the cheese man.

I was so excited about cheese I started telling this teenager on the cheese counter about all the cheeses I'd tried, only to eventually twig when I noticed that he looked a bit glazed over that instead of being impressed he just saw an 'old' (I'm 35 but when you're a teenager anyone over 21 is old) woman with no life

Migola unfortunately I live in Warwickshire, so the delights of La Fromagerie are not open to me You lucky thing!

We like Pié d'Angloys from Sainsburys and also tried a couple of Norfolk cheeses from the farm shop this week - Norfolk Dapple, an unpasteurised hard cheese, and Binham Blue. Yum.

Whoamireally · 31/03/2010 20:23

Funnily enough I almost picked up the Pie D'Angloys today...but I did manage to get some Appenzeller ( at how expensive it is!!) so looking forward to that tomorrow

Abondance?
A bit like Appenzeller but different moutains.

meltedmarsbars · 01/04/2010 10:28

Have you tried lanark blue? Very tasty, mmm!

Whoamireally · 01/04/2010 13:16

Appenzeller was delicious - very strong flavours of caramel, can def recommend to those who have yet to try it - £20 a kilo though

meltedmarsbars have to admit that am not a huge blue cheese fan, but the Lanark Blue is suitably poncey Is it a 'strong' blue or mild? If it's mild I'll give it a go.

Is there such a thing as a mild blue cheese?
