Do you let your children have chocolate spread??

I am running out of things to try and give dd for breakfast. She is a nightmare and won't eat any cereals. I have so far managed to get her to eat some toast but the last few days she's starting to say she doesn't like it so i need something to make her eat at least some toast!!
Have tried jam, marmite, cheese, lemon curd, just butter, you name it she's had it!! I've deliberately avoided chocolate spread but am thinking it might be the one thing she'll eat!
Is it really really bad for them??

I don't think it's the devil's work, give it if you want to Ms Wong and anyone else. But you might as well let them have a bar of chocolate with sugar on top for breakfast. If that's what you want to do, fine! Go ahead, I wouldn't that's all. But I really really don't care enough about this to fight about it. Plus it's too hot to fight and I'm going out in a minute

sorrel · 13/07/2005 09:47

could make a fruit compote with blueberries and raspberries. then you can control sugar content.
dn who was brought up in Holland for first 4 years used to love apple sauce too. can make it easily and add it to yog or put it on toast or just eat it as it is.

swiperfox · 13/07/2005 09:47

It could well be that she isn't a breakfast child. I never have been. I've never eaten breakfast!! Although i do make a point of sitting with her and having something so that she will.
My mum used to go mad at me for never having breakfast - now i see why!!

oo pancakes are another option..u can get traditional ones which we love to have for brekkie sometimes, also crumpets, eggy bread

WideWebWitch · 13/07/2005 09:48

Smoothies are a great idea. Or plain strawberries/melon/fruit. Or it doesn't have to be breakfast things, it can be anything she likes, so something you'd normally give at lunch say.

okapi · 13/07/2005 09:50

I give mine whatever they will eat - sometimes it's apple and crackers with marmite on, sometimes it's jaffa cakes, sometimes it's yoghurt, sometimes it's cereal.

they don't like chocolate spread BTW or I might try that

suzywong · 13/07/2005 09:50

if it were cooler WWW could we have a tussell?

NotQuiteCockney · 13/07/2005 09:51

swiperfox, smoothie-makers are a waste of time. If you have a wand blender, or a regular blender, that'll do the job just fine.

Milk, a banana and a few strawberries (maybe some plain yogurt too?) make a lovely smoothie.

Nemo, I can't imagine buying pancakes. Such a strange thought. I know they sell them here, but it'd be like buying ready-made tea. Or toast. They're not that hard to make.

Pennies · 13/07/2005 09:51

Another vote for amercian style pancakes here - they are a bit of a faff but if you make a load you can freeze them and re-heat tem in the oven in a couple of minutes. Freeze them with prices of greaseproof paper in between them so they don't get all stuck together.

NotQuiteCockney · 13/07/2005 09:51

Hmm, that came out harsher than I meant, Nemo. Obviously buying pancakes is normal here, they sell them everywhere. It's just odd to me.

WideWebWitch · 13/07/2005 09:51

Oo er sw, tell you what, you tell me not to post on something and I'll give you more than that!

okapi · 13/07/2005 09:52

agree with WWW - mine sometimes have toasted cheese sandwiches or tuna on crackers for breakfast - who cares if it's not traditional breakfast food?

Nemo1977 · 13/07/2005 09:52

lol SW they are hard for me...they always end up burnt/under cooked or on the floor. I really am bad with pancakes. Plus they are great to have in the freezer and u just defrost n cook.

Nemo1977 · 13/07/2005 09:52

oops meant NQC not sw

TinyGang · 13/07/2005 09:53

Here

I don't use a special smoothie maker just use a Braun hand blender thingy - seems to work ok.

NotQuiteCockney · 13/07/2005 09:54

I don't know how you end up with them on the floor (oh no, you're not trying to flip them are you? That's a movie trick, real people don't do that), but making sure they're cooked enough is dead easy - when you're cooking the first side, wait until you see bubbles coming through, and then turn them. They just need a minute or two on the other side.

FrenchGirl · 13/07/2005 09:54

what about homemade muffins? Many different types you can make, reasonably healthy, sweet or savoury. DD who's not brilliant at breakfast loves them.

Flamesparrow · 13/07/2005 09:56

Have you got a decent frying pan Nemo? Mine is useless for pancakes cos its really old and sort of domes in the middle...

Enid · 13/07/2005 09:56

I give choc spread under peanut butter (the wholefood sort) after MI's sage advice (needed ideas for high calorie snacks to build up erstwhile veggie child)

They have it on toast pretty much every day.

gingerbear · 13/07/2005 09:57

a smoothie maker is just a blender with a tap (and £10 more expensive)
Tesco own brand blender with lovely glass jug is £17

swiperfox · 13/07/2005 09:58

ooh she's a muffin fiend! how do you get healthy muffins??

gingerbear · 13/07/2005 09:58

Eggy bread - spread with marmite - yum.

tarantula · 13/07/2005 09:58

In direct answer to te question. No not unless I can help it. Its MY green and blacks chocolate spread and I dont want to share it [stamps foot]. Am sure dp gives it to dd tho when Im not looking.

As for breakfast Im not a breakfast person and neither is dd really. We get up at about 7.30/8 and I go to work and then have a bowl of muesli (about 9.30) and dp feeds dd breakfast at about that time too (porridge with raisins and prunes..a small bowl). She wont eat before that time and likes to have a good run around to build up her appetite.

fresh banana and strawberry milkshake is popular in this house - v quick to whizz up in the blender and is a meal in itself.
