What cereals etc do you feed your dc? (looking for inspiration for my toddler)

DD has either porridge or shreddies but I feel she is becoming bored by them.

What other healthy options do you feed your children?

Weetabix, puffed wheat, cornflakes, and sometimes those apricot wheat things (like shreddies only not Nestle and with a fruit filling).

Marne · 22/01/2010 20:47

Dd1- wheatabix, shreddies, corn flakes, rice crispies.

Dd2's not keen on cereal and i always struggle to find her anything she likes for breakfast.

Fruit and yoghurt?

almost always porridge, that's what they like

QOFE, beware... some own brands are made by nestle (tesco and sainsburys i believe)

IWillNotNeverEatATomato · 22/01/2010 20:49

DS has Sainsbury's version of Cheerios (I think they call them Multigrain Hoops) a fraction of the price of real Cheerios,

He also likes Sainsbury's version of Rice Krispies

bamboobutton · 22/01/2010 20:51

ds likes
crunchy nut cornflakes
weetabix
toast with marmite
cinnamon bagels smothered in butter

he used to love readybrek but he's gone off that recently.

ChatterNatterChatter · 22/01/2010 20:54

Are rice krispies full of sugar? That's the impression I have but I am not all clued up about any of this.

I try to read the labels but get so confused and I'm not sure how much is too much sugar, salt etc

OP posts:

most cereals are full of sugar

that's why we stick mainly to porridge!
or toast/bagels/croissantss

blithedance · 22/01/2010 21:02

Weetabix
Mini shredded wheat
Ready Brek
Shreddies

(or to be truthful, Aldi or Asda generic versions of the above!)

If reluctant they get a spoonful of raisins or dusting of sugar.

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 22/01/2010 21:07

Are they? Oh no - but surely not Waitrose ones?

thisisyesterday · 22/01/2010 21:08

no, i think waitrose are ok

check babymilkaction though

Bumperlicious · 22/01/2010 21:09

DD is really fussy about cereal so mainly eats ours: bran flakes, Special K and museli, yet refuses Cheerios

slng · 22/01/2010 21:09

We use cereal as "garnish" on fresh and dry fruits and yogurt. Adds a bit of crunch and hopefully doesn't do too much harm. Perhaps I shouldn't believe everything I read but I did read something about how these highly processed cereals are not good for you and can't get it out of my mind ...

In any case I buy multigrain hoops, weetabix, bran flakes, shreddies, and sometimes rice crispies (because I like it and it's nice with tinned pears).

slng · 22/01/2010 21:10

We do buy Waitrose ones.

Takver · 22/01/2010 21:10

Porridge, toast or a boiled egg here generally.

I mostly eat Suma's own brand 'de luxe' muesli (no sugar or milk powder, can't stand sweetened cereals) which is nice but dd prefers a hot breakfast in winter.

ruddynorah · 22/01/2010 21:10

all the crap ones. but we treat them more as puddings/snacks rather than nutritious breakfast items! so here it's weetos, frosted wheats and coco pops. at nursery she has shreddies or porridge.

raspberrytart · 22/01/2010 21:16

Porridge, shreddies, cheerios, bran flakes with fruit and sometimes yoghurt.
Not all at once but sometimes a mixture.
Bacony egg at w/e!

Ewe · 22/01/2010 21:21

Weetabix or cheerios here.

BertieBotts · 22/01/2010 21:25

Cheerios - which is probably the only Nestle thing I still buy, but can't find a decent alternative. Honey nut loops are not the same

Also raisin/apricot/blueberry wheats. Tesco even do cranberry and pomegranate ones but am a bit reluctant to try them.

BertieBotts · 22/01/2010 21:26

Ooh Tomato thanks for the Sainsbury's tip, will have to try those

Ewe · 22/01/2010 21:50

DD knows if I try and buy fake cheerios, she refuses to eat them, fussy madam!

MrsKitty · 22/01/2010 21:57

DS (2.11) currently enjoys a medley of cereals for breakfast so he has weetabix with a sprinkling of own brand rice krispies and a further sprinkling of own brand shreddies

He also likes muesli, but only from my bowl

Cereal is currently supplemented by a slice of buttered toast and an apple ("Cut-up Mummeeeeee")

jollydiane · 22/01/2010 21:58

Bid odd this - Rice Crispies at the botton, Coco pops on the top, springle of cornflakes and the some Sultanas

cranbury · 22/01/2010 23:02

Waitrose multigrain hoops nicer than cheerios, a bit less sugary.

ruhavingalarf · 22/01/2010 23:12

weetabix
cheerios as a treat when I am feeling weak
cornflakes
fruit and fibre when they see me eating it
hot oats ( porridge - y ) with cinnamon and sultanas
homemade granola ( do I get a star? )

sometimes at the weekends we have hot cross buns. but don't tell the sugar police.
