cheese and potato pie?

jeminthecellar · 16/01/2010 10:01

Are you thinking of cheese and onion pie?

WeWantYourDoofDoofs · 16/01/2010 10:02

At my school it was simply cheese and onion mashed potato inside a pastry crust, couldn't imagine you'd need a recipe for that? (aside from pastry maybe)

teamcullen · 16/01/2010 10:23

Did it have potato in? I cant remember

It was a thicker consistancy than a flan though, but it didnt have a lid. It wasnt like a Hollands cheese and onion pie.

You must be so much younger than me..all I remeber about school dinners is cabbage and tapioca pudding....

jeminthecellar · 16/01/2010 10:25

My mum makes a cheese and onion pie that sounds like you describe- like an oniony quiche really...but orange as she uses red leicester cheese...

NewYearNewKnickers0nMaHead · 16/01/2010 10:27

We used to have a dish with just potatoes and cheese mixed up the cheese was sprinkled on top and baked in the oven.

Was delish but have never managed to make it quite the same!

littledawley · 16/01/2010 10:28

I loved that pie!!

Zweig · 16/01/2010 10:29

I'm sure our school one was as WeWantYourDoofDoofs describes, but I've always wondered what you do with the onion?

presumably you cook and mash potato, grate cheese but do you need to pre-cook the onion before mixing together and putting in pastry? or simply chop it finely, mix in and hope it cooks when the whole thing is put in the oven?

WeWantYourDoofDoofs · 16/01/2010 10:38

I'd fry the onion till it was soft then mix it into the mash/cheese.

NorkilyChallenged · 16/01/2010 10:41

Thanks WWYDD - looking back I loved that cheese pie (which was weirdly always served with chips - potato and more potato) but sometimes the onion was a bit crunchy and stronger-tasting so maybe sometimes they didn't soften it enough first?

teamcullen · 16/01/2010 10:41

If it had potato in it I bet it was smash.

Maybe if the smash was made quite watery with loads of cheese added and then baked in the oven, it would de-hydrate to give the right consistancy.

we had one which was like a quiche but with so much cheese it was orange! (In t'good old days before uncoloured cheddar )
TOP.

teamcullen · 16/01/2010 10:45

Jamima- i was one of those rare breads of children who would eat anything put in front of them. Tapioca and cabbage included. But I know lots of people who liked the cheese pie, so it must have been good!

We had this all the time at infants/juniors. Always served with mash, so if you didn't like it you could sculpt a little hideaway for it under the mash and pretend you were only leaving one thing. Used to do the same with spam fritters (bleurgh).

foxinsocks · 16/01/2010 10:50

god I LOVED that cheese pie from school. Was thinking about it the other day when dd was talking about her (rather nice sounding) school meals.

MollyRoger · 16/01/2010 10:52

oh Tapioca. I used to get around 14 portions of that as I was the only child who liked it. Still do....
but not semolina. That is the devil's jizz.

foxinsocks · 16/01/2010 10:55

actually, I ate anything as a child too (as long as it wasn't fish other than fish n chips of course)

even that runny rice pudding they served up with a dollop of jam on top

Heated · 16/01/2010 10:57

That cheesy potato pie was lovely. Not much else was, but we ate school dinners on the basis it did your immune system good.

foxinsocks · 16/01/2010 11:00

I have a love of overboiled cabbage and meat gravy entirely due to years of it in school

mii · 16/01/2010 11:34

Cheese and potato pie is our poor dish

We just cook and mash the potatoes, put in a lasagna type dish grate tons of cheese on top and stick it in the oven

lovely with baked beans

We had it when kids and it was my parents poor dish along with eggs, chips and beans (usually the only thing left on a friday!

Most people have some spuds and a bit of cheese hanging around at the end of the week, tis good comfort food

WeWantYourDoofDoofs · 16/01/2010 13:12

It was our poor dish too but served with crispy bacon bits crumbled on top (went further that way) and HP sauce. And a watery thin tomato slice bunged on top [boak]

Heated · 16/01/2010 15:01

School version always had pastry, so definitely a pie.

I too only like overcooked white cabbage

janeite · 16/01/2010 18:53

My mum used to one in a quiche dish, which consisted of blind-baked pastry, filled with mashed potato that was mixed with boiled onions and grated cheese then baked. Yum.

Dp makes one which is essentially that but without the pastry. The dds love it.

ProfYaffle · 16/01/2010 18:58

I hated cheese pie at school but love it now, carbs 'n' cheese mmmmmmm ......
