Would you eat a chicken 5 days past use by date?

PavlovtheCat · 10/01/2010 15:17

Got a chicken delivered from ASDA, first time we have used them.

The chicken we got was use by the following day, which i did not realise at the time. I always buy the longest use by period, so did not even consider it. When i have bought from other online shops, the meat dates have all been at least a few days away.

So, we planned to have it today for sunday lunch, and the use by date it 5th Jan.

We are thinking its probably too late to use it, but i would like not to throw it away if it is useable at is a £6.00 bird, was meant to be doing chicken pie and curry, stock and soup with the rest .

NO

PavlovtheCat · 10/01/2010 15:19

Good, make me feel 1) i am chucking so much food away and at myself for not checking it and 2) that i am not awasting food without good reason.

Thanks

No. Been there, Pavlov, if that makes you feel any better!

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 10/01/2010 15:21

No way, not chicken.

MerlinsBeard · 10/01/2010 15:22

Only if it had been in the freezer.

shortandsweet2 · 10/01/2010 15:22

Don't use it but would also call asda up and tell them, they will normally refund you.

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 10/01/2010 15:24

It will absolutely honk if you unwrap it!
Throw it out and consider it a lesson learned about Asda and their bloody use by dates. Complain to Asda. And shop with Ocado from now on .

badgermonkey · 10/01/2010 15:26

No, not chicken, and I am very laissez-faire about dates on food.

TrillianAstra · 10/01/2010 15:26

Does it say 'use by' or 'best before'? Use by is much more serious. Best before means close to nothiing.

You can smell if chicken is wrong. I've had chicken within its dates smell wrong before.

No, not chicken. I've never had any problems with Asda sell by dates before, and they are really good at refunding.

dylsmum1998 · 10/01/2010 15:28

def don't use it. i refuse to shop with asda online now for that reason.
i did get a refund for the foods they delivered to me with the next mornings best before date on. however it took over 7 days to receive the refund and i had to ask my xMIL to go shopping for me in the meantime.
my dd had chicken pox so i couldn't get out and most of the food asda had delivered me was to short date to be of use

jellyjelly · 10/01/2010 15:31

not unless I wanted to get the shits.

duckyfuzz · 10/01/2010 15:37

no, not chicken. This is what I hate about getting shopping delivered, I always get long sell-bys but they rarely deliver them, I think they actively use up short sell bys on deliveries in fact

pooexplosions · 10/01/2010 15:38

Smell it. If its off it will reek, if it smells completely normal I would for sure use it.
Use by dates are quite arbitrary, use your eyes and nose and common sense instead.

MrsJohnDeere · 10/01/2010 15:40

No.

PavlovtheCat · 10/01/2010 15:47

Alas cannot use Ocado, do not deliver to our area. I will call Asda and ask them for a refund, most of the veg was useless too, gone off before we could use it. I normally {used to] use sainsbo for most things, and then local veg shop for veggies, but with a newborn thought i would try Asda.

It was a use by, rather than sell by. DH's attitude is that as it was delivered that evening, if he had been in the shop buying it, he would have expected it to be reduced in price.

DH said it has a stronger smell than a fresh bird, but not 'off' smelling. He has ditched it and is driving to sainsbo to pick up another one.

The alternative is a take away which i would prefer but we are attempting to conserve money!

If i had bothered to check though, i would have frozen it immediately.

Ocado do not rip you off with short sell-bys .

I do Asda online, to save money, but only the things that aren't fresh.

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 10/01/2010 15:49

Sorry, cross posted there banging on about Ocado !

PavlovtheCat · 10/01/2010 15:51

DH just told me Ocodo DO deliver here now. Are they ver ver expensive? {sighs] i have heard good things, but maternity leave means reduction in income/more creativity (but not out of date food!)

PavlovtheCat · 10/01/2010 15:55

have already decided Asda is not necessarily the best for saving money for us, as we do not buy the large quantities of everything needed to get the savings, like buy 2 get 3rd free, we prefer half price deals.

I think i will just do what i did before, but try morrisons for basics, and local shop for veg. I normally do wilko for domestics and DH said Lidl/aldi (cant remember which one he said) for stuff like olive oil. But toooooo many shops!

PavlovtheCat · 10/01/2010 15:57

DH lied. They don't - PHEW. That could have been disasterous!

Pavlov - I meal plan. I bought enough food to feed 5 for five days. £80. It is no more expensive than shopping anywhere else without a list. They do own brand which is just as good as the branded stuff and don't sell crap. Give it a go.

mummyofexcitedprincesses · 10/01/2010 16:36

I have had meat from ASDA and it doesn't seem to last well before its date, so I wouldn't dare eat it after. Their fresh stuff just doesn't seem to come up to scratch ime.
