Would you eat a chicken 5 days past use by date?

Got a chicken delivered from ASDA, first time we have used them.

The chicken we got was use by the following day, which i did not realise at the time. I always buy the longest use by period, so did not even consider it. When i have bought from other online shops, the meat dates have all been at least a few days away.

So, we planned to have it today for sunday lunch, and the use by date it 5th Jan.

We are thinking its probably too late to use it, but i would like not to throw it away if it is useable at is a £6.00 bird, was meant to be doing chicken pie and curry, stock and soup with the rest .

Pavlov - I used a chicken that was at least 3 days past its use by date earlier this year and it was fine!

I asked on here and was advised that as long as it didn't smell really bad when I unwrapped it, and as long as it was well cooked it wouldn't be a problem. Lots of people screamed 'NO!' though!

Entire family, including small dc, had no ill effects at all.

Can you fish it out the bin?

smell it. That's what we all did before those ridiculous use by dates.

If it smells fine, it will be fine.

If it smells bad (applies to chicken technically within use by date) don't eat it

fab problem with meal planning, is that would rely on me cooking. And DH is the cook in this house and he often changes his mind about what he wants to eat or uses things meant for other meals, so then we run out of what we need and have to buy more things to make that meal! We do meal plan of sorts, with a bit more.

I guess it was not too bad. I spent £106, planned for 10 days meals, and got 7 from it (not had fish pie yet) given that the chicken was off and we had less veg than intended However, I am struggling for food to snack on as I did not buy enough (breastfeeding, ALWAYS hungry). Problem is, by the time i have got in car and driven to another shop for meat, i have spent money on petrol, and wasted more time, i might not save that much.

I have just done a shop at tesco, with lots of half price offers on things we need right now, and I know that they never have the cheaper free range chickens so will send me a bigger more expensive one as s substitute and not charge the difference!

hambler DH was not happy with it. He is normally the one saying 'eat it!' when i say no, but he was quite unsure. He said it did not smell rank, but there was a slight whiff which made him so not taking the chance.

What about cereal to eat between meals? I remember the breast feeding hunger.

fab eating cereal, and bread. If i eat any more bread/toasts/crumpets i will turn into a slice of bread of bread!

Porridge is good though, got lots of that too! Eating with frozen (thawed) fruit made into compot, tinned mangoes (yum!), bananas, jam, so

You've probably done this already, Pavlov, but have you had a good look at your diet and cut out refined carbs, sugar etc?

I find my blood sugar copes much better if I stay away from those things. A good big bowl of Jordans natural muesli keeps me going till lunch too...

bella no i have not done that...i am eating everything in sight! I am also find i have a BIG appetite for sweet things, which i did not before he arrived. I am very much a savoury person normally, preferring a bowl of pasta to a bowl of ice cream. Now however, give me a magnum and a bar or fruit and nut any day! (plus the pasta! ). I have just had a roast, and ate twice the amount i would normally. And I am struggling to keep the weight on. Certainly not running the risk of keeping the pounds on...

Wasn't suggesting it as a weight loss method. I just meant as a way of stabilising your blood sugar and stopping you feeling so very hungry. Before I changed my diet I got really bad blood sugar lows and got very grumpy, but now I'm on a (slightly ) more even keel.

I find that if I do have lots of sugar one day then I really crave it the next. If I eat lots of protein, complex carbs and a fair dollop of fat then I feel a lot fuller for longer.

Chocolate is clearly acceptable though

...but then again....if you're really eating loads and can't keep the weight on, would it be worth having your thyroid function checked maybe?

I am definitely grumpier than normal! I guess you burn sugar more quickly too so will get hungrier quicker. No, i did not think you were suggesting a weight loss programme! I definitely don't need one. Problem is, i had hardly any weight gain during pg due to HG, so now, there is nothing spare, so it is all from food, which means I really need to increase my intake, and agree, need to make it more fuel efficient. I have 6wk check this week so will talk to gp about thyroid but sure it is just having a hungry boy!
