HELP! it looked like a bargain, loads of meat for a fiver, but it's been sat in the fridge for a week and I don't know what to do with it.

Any suggestions welcome

I cover mine with mango chutney, and bung it in a roasting bag (from most supermarkets)
Gives you a dinner, then sandwiches for the rest of the week

cut into thick slices put a ring of pineapple on each and then cover with cheese and bake in the oven, serve with potatoes and veg,

or cover in mustard and honey and serve as a roast dinner

or do it with fried eggs and chips

or just cook it, let it cool and eat it cold with salad, or in sandwiches

MrsBadger · 14/12/2009 19:34

poach it in cider with chopped veg and eat cold (yum)

I've heard that the way to do it brilliants is boil it in coca cola a la Nigella!

MrsJamin · 14/12/2009 19:37

*brilliantly

I will probably do one hot meal, prob egg and chips, and the rest sandwiches.

does that nigella thing really work? I mentioned it to dp and he thought it was a con.

A friend of mine swears by that coca cola recipe, it's not a con at all!

notamumyetbutoneday · 15/12/2009 13:18

I boil mine in a pan for a couple of hours, transfer to oven and glaze with a mixture of honey and wholegrain mustard then bake in oven for another hour or two (depends on size of joint).

Remove and scoff immediately leaving nothing for lunch

MostHighlyFavouredLady · 15/12/2009 13:25

The Nigella thing does work, as does her apple juice and cider recipes - but personally I think it's just as good slowly boiled in water.
(Soak overnight in cold water to reduce the salt, or bring to the boils and re-fill with fresh water.)

If you add an onion studded with a few cloves, some celery, bouquet garni and carrots, you're left with a lovely stock to make lentil/lentil and ham soup with later.

You can coat with honey and mustard powder after and brown in hot oven for 20 mins or so.

Afair the reason Nigella uses fancy stuff is for the stock at the end. No need to complicate things.

CatherineHMumsnet · 20/03/2010 12:36

I've just made Nigella's ham in coca cola (Sainsbury's is currently doing half price ham joints) and have no idea what to do with the stock that's left. any ideas?

notsoteenagemum · 20/03/2010 12:44

Cook red cabbage in it and serve with the ham and Jacket potatoes omm nom nom.

notsoteenagemum · 20/03/2010 12:45

The ham in Cherry coke is really nice as well.

Northernlurker · 20/03/2010 12:54

I do boil for a few hours dependant on size and then glaze with treacle and mustard and roast.

CatherineHMumsnet · 20/03/2010 15:51

Do you think the stock might keep for a few days? Was wondering whether I could use it to cook potatoes boulangere later on this week?
