Serving a ham hot/warm?

This could be the most irritating question about ham yet on MN this week...

In the past when I have roasted a ham I have always served it cold for buffets etc. I know this is a really, really, really dense question, but do people serve it warm, as in hot from the oven as well? If so, what would you serve it with? What sort of sauce would you have?

We have friends coming over a couple of days before Christmas so I want to do a festive meal but not Christmas dinner. Woulod ham served warm with potatoes dauphionoise be really, really wierd? Just trying to think of a way so that it wont be too dry and my mind is blank!

We serve hot ham with either cumberland or parsley sauce. 'Tis delicious. And def not dry.

It'd be good with dauphinoise or boulangere potatoes too - I usually do a mixture of roasted root vegetables to go with it.

Thanks Daisy- do you have a recipe you use for cumberland sauce, please? its not something Ive ever made before.

Delia has a recipe for Cumberland sauce in her Christmas book. I think it is on her website as well.

Yes I would serve ham warm - however am like you, normally leave it for cold cuts.

I have served it warm done in coke - ham boiled in coke and then covered in a treaclish glaze, baked in oven and served warm. It tastes very barbecuey and I served it with corn on cob mexu=can styley, and sweet potato wedges (prob too informal for you?)

If not cook it in cider and serve with parsley sauce, would certainly go very well with dauphinoise potatoes.

Thank you everyone, I just looked up delia's recipe for cumberland sauce and it looks delicious, i also found this one on waitrose http://www.waitrose.com/recipe/Honey-Roast_Ham_with_Cumberland_Sauce.aspx this one which sounds nice although the picture of the flourescent organge ham a bit disturbing!

I'd go with Delia's recipe - I've tried it and it was delicious. I was a bit wary of the Waitrose one; for no good reason really, but definitely wouldn't rely on it if I was cooking for guests and hadn't had time to try it out beforehand.

We're having hot ham tonight - a trial of the one I've ordered for Christmas. My lovely butcher gave it to me (for free! How cool is that?) so I can make sure I actually like the cure and smoke he's using for the Christmas Ham.

Wow Daisy that is so generous of your butcher! What are you serving your ham with tonight if I may ask?

I serve ham warm (refered to as 'bacon' in the fair country I live in) I serve it up with cabbage and spuds. Spuds with lots of butter. No sauce!!! Maybe a bit of mustard

daisydotandgertie · 12/12/2009 20:42

I served roasted root veg - beetroot, sweet potatoes, carrots, a few onions, parsnips and a bit of rosemary.

I also did a mix of green beans and mangetout and served the whole lot with parsley sauce.

My parents were here for supper.

MrsMattie · 12/12/2009 20:45

With cumberland sauce or a any Christmassy chutney. I also make a Cranberry & red wine gravy which goes well with ham.

Roasted root veg - as daisy said - is really good with ham. We're having this on Xmas Eve. I'm doing desiree potatoes, parsnip, carrot, squash and red onion roasted with Nigella's ham in coke.

I also call it bacon in RL@Buddleja. Love a good bit of bacon and cabbage

Ivykaty44 · 12/12/2009 20:48

I don't bake ham as I find it to dry - I cook in water and leave in the saucepan in the water to keep hot until I serve (keep the lid on the saucepan.

serve with mashed potato and pickles and chutneys.

or parsley sauce and mash?

Ivykaty44 · 12/12/2009 20:49

in rl I call it gammon

IckleJess · 12/12/2009 21:00
