i am planning one for dh's birthday (i shall prob end up eating more than half of it though!). so far i have:

banon de provence
st agur
local camembert
mont d'or
quince jelly, apple wedges, rick stein oat biscuits, water biscuits

does it sound balanced or would you tweak it in some way?

zebramummy · 30/11/2009 20:30

maybe you should get a babysitter and cover yourself in cheese like samantha's sushi in the sex and the city movie.

sorry i know nothing about cheese.

zebramummy · 30/11/2009 20:37
Hmm

LetThereBeRock · 30/11/2009 20:39

I'd want at least one hard cheese.

BonjourIvresse · 30/11/2009 20:51

Comte or Beaufort,
Forme d'ambert
Ardrahan
Mont d'or
St Felicien
Grapes, french bread, quince paste.

My Dh would Lurve this, what a fab idea.

You could also cook a cheese meal, cheese soffle, followed by baked cambert and cheese cake

zebramummy · 30/11/2009 20:51

yes good point - maybe a small hard italian one?

OP posts:
zebramummy · 30/11/2009 20:56

ardrahan ? that is a name i don't recognise.
bonjour - i don't know if i could pull off a cheese meal without one of the courses going wrong: great idea though.

Comte or Beaufort are boh hard - or you could have montgomery cheddar. Where will you get them from?

zebramummy · 30/11/2009 21:00

oh probably f&m plus local farmers market - kerching!!! i would love to be in france. once we stayed up in the mountains and there was a huge wooden table set with at least 30 different varieties - many artisinal. i just wanted to cordon off the table, drag my chair up and dig in

BonjourIvresse · 30/11/2009 21:04

Ardrahan They have it in waitrose but they sell it too young, you'd need to buy it there a week in advance. You could get Stinking Bishop instead.

zebramummy · 30/11/2009 21:06

thanks for the link - i am curious enough to try it. stinking bishop would be a lot easier to source as the deli round the corner sell it and i happen to know already that dh likes it a lot (although he does not think that it is very smelly)

OP posts:
BonjourIvresse · 30/11/2009 21:17

Ardrahan is very like stinking bishop but not as stinky.

sallyjaygorce · 30/11/2009 21:21

We had cheese instead of cake for our wedding. Cornish Yarg - nice wrapped in nettle leaves although can have it in wild garlic leaves. I love a crumbly matur Manchego. Salty Roquefort. A little hard Provencal goats cheese. Had something lovely from Norfolk the other day - what the hell was it? Will try to remember. Like walnuts and Russet apples with my cheese. And bread.

For a blue cheese try Stichelton - it is really stilton but it can't be called that any more as it is made from raw (unpasteurised) milk. I'm also an Ardrahan fan and for a hard cheese I would go for Montgomery's Cheddar/Appleby's Cheshire/KIrkham's Lancashire.
The best oatcakes I have ever eaten were from the Ullapool Bakery

zebramummy · 30/11/2009 21:28

some of our regional cheese are amazing - i have problems remembering the names too though!thanks secondcoming - i think your tastes are the opposite to dh who HATES port salut and cheese with stuff added (such as fruit or onions) - i like bothe though

Had some lovely Lincolnshire Poacher in lieu of cheddar and some cashel blue which was delish.

MollieO · 30/11/2009 21:30

Dairylea triangles
Cheese strings
Babybel

zebramummy · 30/11/2009 21:32

yes - cashel blue is good, i agree. i think i am going downstairs to raid the fridge now strictly in the name of research!!!

Stick a wedge of Manchego on the plate too . Get it cut at the deli, not pre-packaged. It's a hard, spanish sheep's cheese which is meant to be served with membrillo (quince paste).

zebramummy · 01/12/2009 20:07

yes i like manchego - i do wonder if it would be able to hold its own next to a st agur though?

OP posts:
imkeepingmum · 01/12/2009 20:10

What a great idea! No suggestions on the cheeses although agree on Manchego, it's lovely. I feel I may need to steal this idea for DP's birthday next year...

Cobblers · 01/12/2009 20:13

You've got to have a Brie. I know you've got a Camembert but could you not change it for a runny Brie de Meaux? I also think Roquefort pans the arse off St Agur.

zebramummy · 01/12/2009 20:14

haha - it was also considering making the cheese into a kind of sculpture and carving it as a whole - however it could go horribly wrong and i would prob keep slicing bits off uneccesarily
