What did your child have for tea today?

My dd1 is 3 and a half and tonight she had sausages, couscous, carrots and broccoli (all half eaten!) then a Munch Bunch fromage frais for pudding. She drank diluted apple juice.

I would love to know what other children of any age have for their tea - just out of nosiness and also to get some more ideas!

Thanks!

ds (2 1/2) - 3 fish fingers, carrots, peas and potatoes and of course lashings of ketchup! Grapes for pud. And this is the boy who broke his tooth yesterday! (see health thread).

Tissy · 20/05/2003 11:37

Cheese, thats all, cheese! She's on a cheese only diet at the moment - won't eat anything else!!!! (oh I hope this passes!)

ThomCat · 20/05/2003 12:33

Well first off - I'm printing this thread off and sticking it to the frifdge for some new food ideas - fab, thanks!
Mine threw her roast dinner the childminder gave her on the floor and point blank refused the bits of roast chicken, potato, parsnip & 3 kinds of veg, instead had a marmite sandwich and lots of water! What are you gonna do??!!
Lunch today is pasta and pesto with fruit after and some cheese as as a snack & this evening's tea is smoked mackeral with potato & veg & some dried fruit (prunes, figs, dates & peaches).

whellid · 20/05/2003 12:38

ThomCat - I'm impressed that you know whats for tea already - that's what I aspire to! You've got me thinking now, as I sent ds off to his childminders with chilli and mash potatoes, then fromage frais. Think it will have to be a spanish omelette tonight as then I can use all the bits and bobs I have in the fridge.

ThomCat · 20/05/2003 12:57

Ha, ha, it's more down to the fact that I give the childminder her lunch & tea every day. On Friday's and weekend's I try to be organised but it doesn't alwys happen. Personally i think it's fab that your littl 'un is having chilli and mash and not getting frozen pizza for tea hon' so pat yourself on the back for that! xx

whellid · 20/05/2003 13:03

Thanks! Ds gets whatever I remember to defrost overnight (or in the microwave in the morning) for lunch. I always manage to cook far more than we need of every meal so have a freezer full of child size portions of chilli, casseroles, curries, anything in cheese sauce etc He does love pizza and garlic bread though!

Iota,
they all do it differently. My ds 3 1/2 had a tantrum one day last week cos I didn't have any smoked salmon to put in his teatime sandwich. He had to have prawns and mayonnaise instead.

My childless friend who was here at the time was utterly gobsmacked

pupuce · 20/05/2003 19:45

My DS 3 1/2 and DD 21 months had an ayurvedic recipe DH makes it's based on rice, raisins and loads of nice spices... he added broccoli.
They had water and no pudding - we try to avoid puddings during the week. We give enough of the "main" course not be hungry and ask for a pud... but they often still do

Lindy · 20/05/2003 19:49

Easy - my son loves smoked salmon too !!

Yesterday's supper might have been healthy but tonight's was frozen pizza, spaghetti hoops, ice cream and a swig of my wine !! Plus crisps! I was on my second glass after having five extra children round tonight!!

Me too Lindy

Just polished off a bottle of wine after entertaining 3 extra children tonight - along with my 3 (all same ages too).

As they were all staying for dinner - I cooked pasta with a tomato and basil sauce with grated cheese on top.

Pudding was fresh strawberries and icecream!

JulieF · 20/05/2003 23:21

DD (18 months) had cheese on toast and a yoghurt. My mum feeds her on Tuesdays as I don't get home from work until 6pm.

Demented · 20/05/2003 23:22

Both my DS1 and 2 (4 years and 11 months respectively) had home made macaroni cheese with sliced tomatoes on the top, DS1 had an apple afterwards, they both had diluted fresh apple juice (DS2's very diluted). Great thread!

dottyparker · 20/05/2003 23:39

waffles and spag hoops ( tinned of course) a snickers before hand and a can of fizzy drink

leander · 20/05/2003 23:54

baked spud peas cod fillet and parsley sauce with a banana and juice.Carbanara for tomorrow well for him anyway i am trying to diet!!

Ghosty · 21/05/2003 04:55

Home made chicken nuggets ... potatoes ... peas, carrots, sweetcorn, green beans (you know .. the frozen mixed veg!)
Followed by an apple and a fromage frais.
Tonight he will have risotto.

debster · 21/05/2003 13:41

Ooh Ghosty how do you make home made chicken nuggets? I am revolted by what they put into shop bought ones after watching a programme about them a few months ago.

ThomCat · 21/05/2003 13:45

those Blue Parrot chicken nuggets you get in Sainsbury's look OK, are they not??????????

Philippat · 21/05/2003 13:47

Pasta and cheesy tomato-y sauce, dried apricots and raisins for pud (a bit constipated which perhaps explains the previous day's refusal of her favourites).

Carmel · 21/05/2003 13:49

I have just purchased the good shopping guide(shopping with a clear conscience). This tells you what all the main companys get up to i.e. workers rights, oppresive regimes, factory farming etc. So tea at the moment is a half hour disccusion with my Partner. Who thinks im loosing the plot!

Enid · 21/05/2003 13:51

Last night dd1 (3.5) had pasta shells with homemade tomato sauce mixed with Philly (hey presto - 'pink' sauce!), cucumber (on the side) and garlic bread and dd2 (7 months) had mash, broccoli, carrots in cheese sauce.

Chicken nuggets are the devils food, they put all kinds of rubbish in them. Blue Parrot Cafe are just as bad as anyone IMO. You can cut up strips of chicken and fry them yourself, much healthier and cheaper in the long run. Also frying chicken strips takes less time than nuggets! And if you buy a whole chicken its cheaper than buying two skinless chicken breasts!

I'll shut up now.

soothepoo · 21/05/2003 13:57

Have a look at this about chicken nuggets.

54321 · 21/05/2003 14:32

problem with chicken nuggets etc etc is we all hate them but the children eat them and don't throw up etc etc. Then again they will eat a full roast and then again not just like the convenience foods it all depends on what they feel like mine have gone to bed on bread and butter many times as they refuse to eat anything I cook for them at times then come bed time they want food so out comes bread and butter. Keep thinking I must not give them anything and let them go to bed hungry but you can't do that plus they are too small to say just how hungry they are and I would hate to think I was starving them!

florenceuk · 21/05/2003 14:45

This thread is very interesting, if somewhat depressing. Last night DS (18mths) refused his chicken casserole and rice, and had grapes, half a banana and a breadstick! Woke up at 9pm, hopefully unrelated...??

WideWebWitch · 21/05/2003 15:14

Completely agree with Enid et al re chicken nuggets and other junk aimed at children.
