...I've already made an apple crumble and DH made an apple sponge cake thing. We have loads still on the tree despite giving some away too, what else can we make? Thanks!

Spicy apple soup; apple and cinammon muffins; apple cake ; apple sauce; tarte aux pommes ; you can freeze the apple sauce

sherby · 13/08/2009 22:14

we have tons of apples on our tree too, but I am not sure if they are eating apples or cooking ones, how do you tell [thicko emoticon]

MrsBadger · 13/08/2009 22:15

when I run out of ideas I just stew the bastards and freeze them till I can think of something exciting to do with them

I wish you could make jam of them but have never found a decent recipe

MrsBadger · 13/08/2009 22:17

sherby, if you bite one and it is revolting (not just a bit sharp) then they are cookers

otherwise they are eaters (but may still be better cooked)

weegiemum · 13/08/2009 22:17

I have a recipie somewhere for Apple nad Blackcurant Jelly which was sublime

Will try to find!

ilikeyoursleeves · 13/08/2009 22:21

I don't even know if ours are eating or cooking apples! Only ever cooked them, they make a deelish crumble though

Wobblypig, do you have a recipe for spicy apple soup? Sounds interesting!

The apple and blackcurrant jelly sounds good too...

oh no not jelly

fannying about straining through muslins

I want stew-sweeten-boil-pot like I do with all the other donated fruit

we eat a lot of jam chez badge and without next door's greengages / PILs damsons / colleagues' rhubarb etc I would be Bonne Maman's biggest investor

WobblyPig · 13/08/2009 22:25

I do at home but am on holiday at moment so don't have it to hand. Try googling it.
Also slice and roast with pork or cook with sausages.

VelvetCushions · 14/08/2009 12:08

We have a tree with loads too.
I was intending on making some apple chutney this year - maybe to give out at Xmas.

I found this recipe below but need to get some jars

Sorry I know this thread is old but does anyone know the answer to this!?

Silkiescatz · 31/08/2021 19:13

Bite the apple and if its really sour its a cooking apple.

Window1 · 31/08/2021 19:17

@Silkiescatz

Bite the apple and if its really sour its a cooking apple.

Thanks I'll taste one. It's strange as a don't think twice about eating an apple from the supermarket but feel a bit odd about eating one from the garden down the road!

Cookerhood · 31/08/2021 19:29

Also when you cook them cooking apples tend to "fall" (go mushy). Eating apples keep their shape more.

Silkiescatz · 31/08/2021 19:33

I am like that too Window. I would wash it and then give it DH to bite. Grin

The cooking ones are often larger, ones we had were about twice as big as a regular apple and all green.

Starrynight468 · 31/08/2021 19:35

Apparently if you wrap them individually in newspaper and in a single stack they last all winter!

Redannie118 · 31/08/2021 19:54

An American friend of ours gifted us some jars of American apple sauce. Totally different to ours, not as sweet and with a bit of spice in it too. Is sublime with cheese and crackers and would make a lovely Christmas gift if you know any foodies.

Apple butter - it’s a bit of a labour of love, but lasts for ages jarred up and is delicious.
Or you can freeze peeled and sliced raw apple for crumbles etc later - dip in lemon juice.

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 01/09/2021 01:24

We make stewed apple and freeze it for apple crumbles etc. I may try juicing some to add to vegetable juice for that bit of sweetness.

Saladd0dger · 01/09/2021 01:37

Pork & apple meatloaf. Freezes well

LaudamusTe · 01/09/2021 02:26

Apple butter and apple sauce. Can it and give away as gifts for xmas.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/09/2021 09:21

Apple chutney. Keeps for months in the cupboard if potted in sterilised jars. Rose Elliott has a good recipe, but from memory you need apples, onions, raisins or sultanas, ginger, salt, vinegar, brown sugar. Any kind of apple would work.

LavendulaAngustifolia · 02/09/2021 12:54

You can make apple butter in a slow cooker if you have one.

Apple brandy is a big hit in this house. Make as you would sloe gin or a blackberry whisky.

FreeBritnee · 02/09/2021 12:58

I used to fret about not using the apples but the birds and insects adore them so I have no issue with chucking the ones that fall into the undergrowth around the garden and letting the wildlife go at them.

We do have a traditional of blackberry picking and then using the blackberries and some bramleys to make a wicked cake. I’ll see if I can find the recipe as it’s blinking delicious and easy.

Easiest cake in the world.

I pickle apples. They're good with cheese or cold meats in place of chutney. I love them, but have recieved a mixed reaction from others, so maybe ine to try a small amount of first...

They are edible as soon as you're done and keep through the winter if unopened. Don't need to be stored for months first.
