Yes, as long as it is lean mince and has been in a proper freezer not a freezer compartment. If it was something fatty like duck or pork I'd say 'No' as the fat goes rancid.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 06/05/2009 12:12

Probably safe enough if you cook it through but after that length of time it won't taste very nice.

meltedmarsbars · 06/05/2009 12:14

Of course its safe as long as its been in a proper freezer and as long as you cook it well.

It doen't "rot" in a freezer.

It freezes. Solid. A method of preserving food.

Excellent, thanks!
Has been in at -18 since the day after I bought it. My mum always says that thing only last 6 months in freezers, and I've never bothered to check up!

It's for spag bol so will make sure I bung in plenty of red wine and herbs so it tastes okay.

You mean beef mince ???

Blimey yes of course, it's fine.

I just made some bolognese from minced beef that was frozen from one of my sister's cattle 2 years ago.

This pack got lost in the bottom of her freezer for a while.

SOLOisMeredithGrey · 06/05/2009 12:19

I've had things like that and a big joint of pork in the freezer for several years(and longer)and they've been fine.

monkeybumsmum · 06/05/2009 12:20

Thanks clumsymum Must be handy having a sister who can provide you with fresh meat!

How about a new thread, 'what's the longest period of time you've had something in the freezer then eaten it?'!!!!!

clumsymum · 06/05/2009 12:23

Ruby, why not? what do you think is wrong with it ?

ThingOne · 06/05/2009 12:24

The time limits for freezing are more like guidelines for "best before" rather than "not safe after". Some food doesn't freeze terribly well and even if wrapped up properly gets "freezer burn" and tastes rank. Mince? Fine .

Ruby, If that happens to stuff from your freezer after 12 - 24 months, then either
your freezer is not doing the job properly, and you need to replace it
or
you don't wrap the food adequately and it gets freezer burn.

A good modern deep freeze should keep food 'deeply frozen', and the decay process is virtually stopped (altho the food does need to be fresh/in good condition when it is first frozen).
I would expect something simple like mince to keep quite happily, with little deterioration over 1 to 2 years.

We did ditch some smoked salmon which had been in the freezer for 2 years. It didn't taste nice (tho not dangerous in any way).

profiterole · 06/05/2009 13:36

ooohhh
i have a joke about this....

MAN how long will a turket last in the freezer?

WOMAN i think about 6 months

MAN i thought that too but i put one in last night and it was dead this morning

i thank you

meltedmarsbars · 06/05/2009 13:37

Clumsymum - is the smoked salmon thing something to do with fat content not freezing as well?

clumsymum · 06/05/2009 13:43

I guess it might be meltedmarsbars, I didn't really think too much about it. It wasn't a deliberate act to leave it in the freezer that long, just a failure to properly stock rotate, and I will watch for that in the future.

But generally speaking, I don't expect any food would come out of long-term freezing and actually kill you (or make you ill). The bacteria in a freezer that works properly will be held off pretty much forever, I reckon.

meltedmarsbars · 06/05/2009 13:45

"failure to stock rotate"!!!!!! You stock rotate? Your house sounds a bit more organised than mine!!

No we don't, that's how come we eat food that's 2 years old

JoeJoe1977 · 06/05/2009 13:52

Yes it is the fat thing with smoked salmon, it's an oily fish. It wouldn't have been hazardous to eat but the taste would've been affected by the fat degrading. If you want fat to freeze then you need a -70 freezer.

The thing with the large joint of pork was that it was just too big for me and a young child, so I kept passing it over...decided to get it out and use it one Christmas with family(I think)and it was lovely!

Anifrangapani · 06/05/2009 14:23

Cook it & feed it to dh. If he feels ill don't eat it.
