Small children and barbaques vaguely heard from somewhere that they shouldn't have them

Is that true? Not sure where I heard it from but I'm sure I've read it somewhere. My mum said she heard it on bbc breakfast the other week that they shouldn't because it is cancergenic (can't spell it sorry!) Not sure if that is true thought it was more to do with food poisoning concerns. Anyway really hoping all this isn't the case as I LOVE bbqs!!!

Crock of shit imho! [girn] BBQ's are dangerous places for anyone if the meats not cooked properly. Go and enjoy.

sail05 · 02/05/2009 21:21

Great I will!

What a load of crap

My two adore barbecues and so do we, our friends and our frinds' children.

Carcinogenic? Poisoning? Honestly, some people spend so much time and energy joylesly striving to live just a little bit longer, I wonder whether they don't actually live any longer, but it just FEELS a lot longer

mosschops30 · 02/05/2009 21:26

God we love BBQ's and so do the kids.

Go enjoy

CarGirl · 02/05/2009 21:27

I would have thought it was more that bbq ie very hot potential very dangerous source of heat & small children don't always mix safely?

onepieceofcremeegg · 02/05/2009 21:27

I'm wondering if the concern was that if the food is very burnt/charred it is supposedly carcinogenic?

Tbh I would be more wary of the burning issue (i.e the children getting burnt, rather than the food)

Disclaimer: I still go to bbqs though

MintyyAeroEgg · 02/05/2009 21:32

Well, I don't give my dc barbecued food because I do believe the warnings about carcinogens in this particular case.

snickersnack · 02/05/2009 21:33

Burned food isn't thought to be particularly great for anyone - this is a very recent article about it. But it really should be fine in moderation. I wouldn't give my dcs burned food, but they probably wouldn't eat it anyway...and there are so many other risks out there, I can't really bring myself to worry unduly about the occasional grilled sausage.

Greensneeze · 02/05/2009 21:33

Really Minty? You wouldn't let them have a sausage at a bbq? blimey

mosschops30 · 02/05/2009 21:49

why does everyone assume that bbq = burnt.

dh is such a demon on the bbq (although terribly annoying when youre still waiting for a sausage 2 hours on) that he cooks meat on it better than I do in the oven

i love these MN moments 'tarquin can never have a sausage from a bbq because of the risk of cancer causing agents' ROFL do you make him wear a mask in the street due to exposure to fumes and suchlike?? Bonkers!!

MaureenMLove · 02/05/2009 21:49

BBQ food, doesn't automatically mean burnt food though!

MaureenMLove · 02/05/2009 21:49

LOL Chops!!

Overmydeadbody · 02/05/2009 21:55

Well, cooking food on a bbq doesn't actually mean it has to be burnt or charred.

The problem is that most people think they need to start cooking while there are still flames on the bbq. This burns the food. If you wait till all the charcoal is just embers the food won't burn, but will cook through peoperly at the right temperature(and it will taste much nicer too)

MintyyAeroEgg · 02/05/2009 22:00

I don't have a child called Tarquin. Neither of them wear masks in the street because of the fumes. I am not bonkers. But I don't like them having barbecued food. One of only 2 food rules I have, actually, Mosschops.

Why can I not be allowed to say this without having the piss taken out of me?

cornsilk · 02/05/2009 22:02

I've heard that burnt food is carcinogenic also.

MaureenMLove · 02/05/2009 22:04

For the record, I wasn't taking the piss out of you. My lol was because Chops posted the same comment as me, at the same time and NOT because she suggested your comments were odd. It's none of my damn business what you let your children eat and not eat!

PheasantPluckersSon · 02/05/2009 22:04

What a bagofshite!

Greensneeze · 02/05/2009 22:05

I wasn't taking the piss either, just surprised

MintyyAeroEgg · 02/05/2009 22:07

I addressed my comment to Mosschops!

Greensneeze · 02/05/2009 22:08

so you did

had never heard of somebody banning bbq food, that's all. I am maniacal about fruit shoots/ribena/etc, and blue sweets

MaureenMLove · 02/05/2009 22:12

I didn't think you were, but it's always a good idea to get these things in writing just in case the whole thread goes tits up!

MintyyAeroEgg · 02/05/2009 22:13

My rules are no bbq, no aspartame.

Overmydeadbody · 02/05/2009 22:13

what's your other food rule minty? (just curious that's all)

Overmydeadbody · 02/05/2009 22:13

Aaaah!

I thought it might be that. That's mine too.

sail05 · 02/05/2009 22:19

I started this thread because my children aged 3 years and 17 months have never been to a bbq. Not sure why in ds1s case ds2 was obviously to little last year. Anyway dh and I love bbqs. Went to our first one of the year last week when sil and her dp were down staying in their caravan and we visited them in the evening with my pil and we had a bbq too much wine etc!

Anyway dhs uncle and aunty are having a bbq on monday and I happened to mention it to my mum and she was horrified and said I mustn't give any to my dc as it is dangerious to small children as it is carciogenic. Spelt it right this time! Said she saw it on breakfast and read it in the dm. I vaguely remember reading somehwere back when I was weaning ds1 that you mustn't give burnt food to small children.
