just googled and found this!
Kamut is an heirloom, non-hybrid ancient grain from the Nile region of Egypt and has never been crossbred. Its recent cultivation in the U.S. encourages agricultural biodiversity and limits the reliance on mono-agriculture. Over 50 natural food manufacturers currently promote products made from Kamut grain. Kamut contains 29% more protein, 27% more lipids and measures higher in 8 of the 9 minerals found in common wheat. It also contains numerous trace minerals which it draws from the rich soil where it is grown.

Kamut is significantly higher in magnesium (23% higher) and zinc (25% higher). In terms of vitamins, Kamut contains more riboflavin, thiamine and niacin than common wheat, and is significantly higher in vitamin E. Of the 18 amino acids usually found in wheat, 16 are higher in Kamut. Threonine, cystine, arginine, histidine, aspartic acid and serine range from 34% to 65% higher in Kamut.

so there you go!

velcrobott, i am so impressed, please tell me you don't woh... otherwise all my excuses will be useless!

velcrobott · 29/04/2005 22:36

What's woh?

velcrobott · 29/04/2005 22:40

Mrspink - Kamut as you describe below is an old wheat. Some people who don't tolerate wheat eat Kamut instead.
You can find pasta and cereals made from Kamut.

Kamut grass- which looks like grass - " There is a vast difference between Kamut flour, which is made from the grain of Kamut, and Kamut grass juice, which is obtained by juicing the green grass. Kamut flour is about 1/6 the cost of Kamut grass juice and contains only a fraction of the nutrition found in the grass juice. Kamut grass helps to regulate pH balance as it has the highest pH of all green foods. It is rich in metabolic enzymes, contains high levels of trace minerals, and is a good source of magnesium, zinc, vitamins B1, B2, B3 and E. "

I currently chew on some 3 times a day... I became aware of it when my SIL started taking barley grass as a supplement....
" comes from barley grass that has been harvested during its early growth, supply vitamins and minerals at levels comparable to the green leafy vegetables. This green food is a rich source of ß-carotene, vitamin C, thiamin, riboflavin, pyridoxine (B6), folic acid, calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and potassium. Additionally, this juice powder supplies antioxidant activity; recently, the compound 2'-O-glycosylisovitexin has been identified in Barley grass, which exhibits antioxidant activity greater than that of vitamin E. Antioxidant nutrients such as those found in cereal grasses are important in maintaining health and the integrity of our bodies. Barley grass is also beneficial because it has an intestinal regulatory effect, and can be used for detoxification and to treat diarrhea and bowel inflammation. "

work outside the home...

velcrobott · 29/04/2005 22:46

I work outside teh home on most days but as I am self-employed I do quite a bit of admin from home.
I aim (for myself - don't care what others do) to be a domestic goddess.... not like Nigella at all.... I think she is way too much into unhealthy eating! but I am proud of what i make, I enjoy cooking and spending time in the kitchen, I really like sitting at the table and sharing a meal with my kids though you will see me at 8PM eating an extra meal with DH in front of tele so am not perfect.
But I am a great believer that health comes through food, more and more studies demonstrate this in every aspect of health... I think people have a poor knowledge of nutrition (sorry) and don't make an effort... now granted to me it is not an effort... but I love it!

bossykate · 29/04/2005 22:49

vb, i salute you, i am not worthy etc etc [smile} thanks for the info on this thread.

bossykate · 29/04/2005 22:49

gah!

velcrobott · 29/04/2005 22:50

LOL Bossykate
You know DS's school dinner was turkey twizzlers today luckily I spotted that and said - HERE IS YOUR PACKED LUNCH THERE IS NO WAY YOU'RE EATING THAT CRAP... LOL

mrspink27 · 29/04/2005 22:52

i was just about to ask whether your kids went to 'normal' school or whether they went to steiner or similar... just the whole organic thing and lifestyle which i am so in awe of, i do my best but know i could do more! not being rude there about steiner btw!

bossykate · 29/04/2005 22:54

ds came back from nursery and told me his favourite food was turkey twizzlers (this was a while ago) and i didn't know what he was talking about - except it didn't sound good. i cannot match your domestic goddess status but i don't allow c**p like that in my house!

ionesmum · 29/04/2005 22:54

Surely the turkey twizzler has been burned in hell????????????????????

Velcro, you are the sort of domestic goddess I would so dearly love to be but never will. Write a book, write a book!!!!

velcrobott · 29/04/2005 22:59

I am working on a book but not about that... though writing a book is REALLY hard !
DS goes to a "normal" school and initially was on school dinners now (since Jamie) - he is on packed lunch most days...
He has either small tomatoes or yellow/red pepper or carrot, 2 sandwitches (with my homemade bread), a fruit and water.... and he does ask for crisps and cakes but sorry - wrong mummy for that !

ionesmum · 29/04/2005 23:08

Can I be nosy and ask what you are writing about?

velcrobott · 29/04/2005 23:10

No you can't at the moment.... I will be happy to tell when I am more advanced (and I am so not.....)
Sorry

ionesmum · 29/04/2005 23:18

No problem, it was a bit cheeky of me to ask anyway! I love writing too and did try to get a book going but had dd2 instead!

Lots of luck with it!

Still think you should do a River Cottage type thing though! )

velcrobott · 29/04/2005 23:21

I have CATed you... I think you'll smile when you get it !

bossykate · 29/04/2005 23:26

why, vb, is it "turkey twizzlers: my part in their downfall" or otoh it could be "ready meals: how they have saved the lives of modern women"... whatever it is, wishing you luck with it

velcrobott · 29/04/2005 23:29

LOL BK!!!!

ionesmum · 29/04/2005 23:35

!

velcrobott · 29/04/2005 23:37

You didn't get it yet, did you????

ionesmum · 29/04/2005 23:39

No, that was my, 'oh that sounds interesting, I'm looking forward to it!' smile!

soapbox · 29/04/2005 23:40

bossykate · 29/04/2005 23:46
