Gluten free desserts anybody?

MorrisZapp · 23/03/2009 14:58

I'm going to a dinner party and have offered to take dessert.

There will somebody there who can only eat gluten free. I'm not intending to cook, just buy something nice from M&S, Waitrose etc.

Does anybody know of any desserts that happen to be gluten free? Alternatively, any ice cream that is gluten free that I could serve with fruit?

Is all fruit gluten free?

How about banoffi pie using GF digestive biscuits?
Pavlova and fruit.

Peachy · 23/03/2009 15:02

Sainsburys o a whole GF section you know, easiest option (M&S useless for that but they do a nice grown up jelly that works)

All fruit GF

Most supermarkets do an ice cream calledswedish glace- gawd is it lovely! Yum! dairy free also (other ice creams might be but reading ingredients is soul destroying if youre not forced to)- ice cream and nice fruit would do, no?

mrsdisorganised · 23/03/2009 15:02

Gluten free is foods that don't contain...wheat, oats, barley and rye.

MadameCastafiore · 23/03/2009 15:03

Do the nigella pavlova - it is yum.

Or she has a chocolate cake that has a whole orange in and ground almonds instead of flour - that is yummy too.

mrsdisorganised · 23/03/2009 15:05

OOohhh madamecastfiore have you got the recipie for the cake??

notwavingjustironing · 23/03/2009 15:06

Anything with meringue is great

MorrisZapp · 23/03/2009 15:25

Thanks for great suggestions but I don't want to make anything from scratch - just grab out out of the supermarket fridge!

I've seen the Sainsburys section but isn't that all store cupboard foods ie not fresh, chilled dessert?

Thanks for the ice cream tip - would be a lovely choice.

M&S do a lovely pannacotta with raspberries which is gluten free. All their food is very clearly labelled if it contains gluten

As a coeliac, ice cream and fruit for pudding at a dinner party is right next to fruit salad in my disappointing desserts list tbh.

pecanpie · 23/03/2009 15:36

Buy mini meringues, raspberries and cream or ice cream. Simple but yum. Most haagen dazs ice cream is gluten free - except for things like cookie dough!

MorrisZapp · 23/03/2009 15:41

I saw that pannacotta yesterday and I was hoping it was gluten free!

Superb. Tvm.

Sorry to be dense but can you just confirm for me that foods from M&S are gluten free unless they say on the back 'contains gluten'?

It's just that I suppose I was expecting it to say 'gluten free' on the front. Don't want to take a gamble as I did that last time and the poor girl couldn't eat the dessert.

CMOTdibbler · 23/03/2009 15:43

Yes, they all have a 'contains gluten' statement in the allergy box (if appropriate). The only things that say gluten free on the front are things like the sausages and cripbakes that are specifically gluten free (rather than just happen to be)

CMOTdibbler · 23/03/2009 15:46

And you can download their GF list from here that has everything they do that is GF on it

LackaDAISYcal · 23/03/2009 15:55

A nice pavlova?

eton mess with mini meringues?

A creamy and rich rice pudding?
a no cook cheese cake with a gluten free base

pavlova is my dessert of choice since being diagnosed with coeliac disease four years ago and agree that ice cream and fruit is a bit of a let down, but most ice cream is gluten free anyway unless it contains cookies or something like that. No need for the dairy free stuff, although it's quite nice in itself.

M&S used to do a really lovely gluten free cherry and chocolate cake (I'd defy anyone to know it was GF) but I haven't seen it instore for ages. their pannacotta is nice, and we had the jelly thing yesterday as part of their Mother's Day menu and it was rather nice......jelly, but for grown ups and delicious with their really thick double cream

Oh, more info like that link, plox, CMOTdibbler. How about Waitrose?

LibrasJusticeLeagueofBiscuits · 23/03/2009 15:58

MorrisZapp do you have a Cook near you?
www.cookfood.net/

they have all types of meringuey desserts which will be gluten free.

BowdyLair · 23/03/2009 15:58

You know when you do your online shop, I wish they'd highlight which are gf. Must be possible..,

LackaDAISYcal · 23/03/2009 15:59

oooh, that link says they still do the chocolate and cherry cake

CMOTdibbler · 23/03/2009 16:01

You have to email Waitrose - details here

Sainsburys here

Getting the fab M&S cherry choc cake is a bit hit and miss for some reason - but is gorgeous

MorrisZapp · 23/03/2009 16:09

Wow - thanks for that link. Superb.

Good old M&S, taking the worry out of food shopping as usual!

CMOTdibbler · 23/03/2009 16:12

Bowdy - we've just got Waitrose Delivers here, and you can tell it to only show you what is GF in each section. It makes life so much easier

notwavingjustironing · 23/03/2009 16:20

the cherry and chocolate cake at M&S has been in and out of the shops, they re-designed the packaging, and its only now stocked in shops where there is a demand for it (we use it as a quick "at home" birthday cake for the kids as it's not very big)

Peachy · 23/03/2009 17:44

Ah you see CMOT, ice cream is right up there in my things that will be waiting in Heaven list LOL (DS1 is GF CF, I am CF- casein, btw if anyone doesn't know is milk protein)

BowdyLair · 23/03/2009 18:16

Bloody hell, that is fantastic, CMOT!

BowdyLair · 23/03/2009 18:27

Sorry for swearing ! How about Tesco??

kingprawntikka · 24/03/2009 16:21

Thank you so much for that CMOT. My son is gluten free and it drives me nuts that when you do online shopping with Ocado/Waitrose you never get adequate info. Off to email now!!
