Do you keep your ketchup and Jif Lemon in the fridge?

Have just noticed on the 2 year out of date bottle of Jif (in the cupboard), it says to keep in the fridge once opened. I remember when I was a kid my mum always kept n the cupboard.

Ketchup also says to keep in the fridge and also says to use within 6 weeks of opening! I keep mine till its used up even if thats a year.

DH says I will get food poisoning Do you think I need to buy new Jif if its best before 2007?

Jif lemon in fridge
Ketchup in cupboard but we get through Ketchup so quick it doesn't have time to go off.

Geepers · 23/02/2009 19:27

Both in fridge. Lemon gets thrown away actually after pancake day. Never look at ketchup as I don't use it but don't think it lasts 6 weeks in this house.

fruitshootsandheaves · 23/02/2009 19:28

never looked at the date on my jif lemon....surely its just lemon juice..can it go off?

mersmam · 23/02/2009 19:29

I don't think it will harm you - it will just have lost a lot of its flavour (but I'm no expert!)

Tidey · 23/02/2009 19:30

Both are kept in the cupboard here, but every time I go to use the lemon it's gone out of date and I end up buying another, like some kind of mad citrus vicious circle.

throckenholt · 23/02/2009 19:31

I keep both in the fridge, and throw the lemon on average a year after its use by date (when I notice in other words). The ketchup I guess doesn't last 6 weeks - 3 boys and DH all use it on anything that doesn't have gravey (despite my pleas to taste it first !) - and have a tendency to take more than they use.

Don't have any jif.
Ketchup sometimes goes back in the fridge. Other times it gets left out. A bottle never lasts as long as 6 weeks though!

My sister told me to keep ketchup in the fridge as it's possible to cultivate salmonella etc in it - especially if kids have been putting their own ketchup on and liberally smearing the top with food.

Disclaimer - my sister is by no means infallible.

ohdearwhatamess · 24/02/2009 21:39

Ketchup yes.
Don't use Jif.

MrsDoylesMole · 24/02/2009 21:39

yes

rookiemater · 24/02/2009 21:40

snaps with ohdear

PandaG · 24/02/2009 21:41

both in fridge here, although mum keeps hers in cupboard. I think there are fewer preservatives in them these days (at least I read that on here once)

mrstimlovejoy · 24/02/2009 21:56

always kept ketchup in cupboard but keep tomato puree in fridge.keep jif in cupboard too.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 24/02/2009 21:59

Both kept in the cupboard here!

ChopsTheDuck · 25/02/2009 13:03

i keep lemon juice for cooking, in case of running out of fresh. It def needs to be kept in the fridge. I used to leave it out in an oil type bottle and it went all curdled and lumpy, was yuck!

womblingfree · 25/02/2009 13:12

Always kept both in the cupboard like my mum, until I met DH who is a chef!!!!

DumbledoresGirl · 25/02/2009 13:19

Ketchup is kept in fridge. I don't use Jif, I buy lemons. If a lemon is half used, I put the other half in the fridge.

A lot of things now say keep refrigerated which used not to. I am thinking other sauce type things like salad cream, mustard, etc. I am not sure if this is because we have become paranoid about food poisoning or the manufacturers have taken out the preservatives that used to keep the food fresh in the cupboard.

BTW, I never look at use by dates unless it is something like meat. You can usually tell when something is off before you have consumed too much of it.

WowOoo · 25/02/2009 13:20

Both outside fridge. Both always seem to be fine.

Bubbaluv · 25/02/2009 13:26

Urgh, nothing worse than cold ketchup on your hot food. Defo in cupboard.
No idea what Jif is. Lemon juice? I just use lemons.

hidetheribbons · 25/02/2009 13:35

Agree with Bubbaluv - ketchup gets too cold in the fridge! Never use jif. Cut a slice of lemon and keep the rest in the fridge, cut side down on a plate. Also keep jam, honey, chocolate spread, marmalade etc in the cupboard. Refridgerated jam makes your toast too cold!
