And what time do you eat it? And what sort of food is it?

Dinner?
Tea?
Supper?

mrsdisorganised · 16/02/2009 19:12

Dinner, at around 5pm

peachygirl · 16/02/2009 19:13

Tea. We eat 6-7.30 it varies on what time DH is back from work. DD eats earlier

Dh says dinner

Maria2007 · 16/02/2009 19:18

Supper. We eat it between 7.30-8.00

Lotster · 16/02/2009 19:18

Dinner.

I'm southern, so it's lunch in the day and then dinner at night as far as I'm concerned!

All my northern relatives called lunch "dinner" and dinner "tea".

And it's only the posher Southerners I know say "Supper" for the evening meal

ComeWhineWithMe · 16/02/2009 19:19

Tea ..normal evening meal pasta ,meat and veg ,casserole etc .

Lotster · 16/02/2009 19:20

timing wise, my 2 year old eats at 12pm and 5pm, we join him on both these times on a Sunday. Otherwise we eat our dinner when he's gone to bed in the evening.

Dinner. DCs eat at 6pm. Me and DH at 8.30 -9.00pm.

It unreasonably drives me wild when my MIL refers to lunch as "dinner".

I even say "school lunches" not school dinners.

Am such a snob.

CuriousSquid · 16/02/2009 19:26

tea somewhere between 5(with the DCs) and 8 although i try not to eat after 7

Rindercella · 16/02/2009 19:27

Dinner, unless we eat much later then it's supper. But I am quite posh.

Lunch is always lunch, never ever must it be referred to as dinner.

LoveMyLapTop · 16/02/2009 19:27

Tea between 6-7pm on work days
Around 5pm with the kids on other days

bananapaddlepop · 16/02/2009 19:27

Supper - we eat at 7.30pm ish.

If we have people over for evening meal we call it dinner though.

Never tea - Tea is for drinking

piratecat · 16/02/2009 19:28

brought up in wales, me and a friend were having this conversation the other day. She is form Stoke, and also says (like me)

dinner (12-1)
tea (6-7) int he evening.

I have lived down south for many years tho, and have been known to say lunch.

but tea is at teatime!!

Takver · 16/02/2009 19:29

Depends what it is:
boiled eggs in the evening if we've had a big sunday roast midday = tea
main meal eaten at home in the evening = dinner
I suppose the rule for us would be that if it is your main meal, then it is your dinner, IYSWIM.

PerArduaAdNauseum · 16/02/2009 19:30

Supper (anywhere between 6 and 9pm). Dinner if people are coming over, but also call school lunches school dinners for some reason

Mercy · 16/02/2009 19:34

Same as Takver.

(although the dc occasionally have a picnic/bits and pieces type meal which we call tea but is eaten in place of dinner (if any of that makes sense)

Beantin · 16/02/2009 19:36

dinner.

WinkyWinkola · 16/02/2009 19:37

Supper. 6-7pm.

lollystar · 16/02/2009 19:43

Used to be tea until I met my DH. With his southern accent he started to get confused when I asked him what he wanted for dinner at noon! Now it's lunch and dinner

Lotster · 16/02/2009 19:53

Was thinking, if you go on a date, you're being "taken out for dinner" aren't you?

You wouldn't say, "would you like to have tea with me?/can I take you out for tea?" Would you? Surely that makes dinner the definitive word for the evening meal??

I do think it's a geographical thing - like when my northern husband calls his trousers "pants" and his pants "underpants", makes me chuckle...

Seona1973 · 16/02/2009 19:56

I'm in Scotland and it's lunch at 12pm and dinner around 5pm (for the kids). I have my own dinner later with dh.

Supercherry · 17/02/2009 14:00

Dinner now, but before university, Tea. DS has it at 5pm, while my DP has it at 7pm when he finishes work. It should have veggies and carbs and protein ideally eg. beef stew with veggies and potatoes.

RandomStranger · 17/02/2009 14:02

Children have tea before husband comes home

elsiepiddock · 17/02/2009 14:02
