Making my own wedding cake-2 tiers please help!

I have decided to make my own wedding cake as we are on a tiny budget. 20-25 guests plus a few elderly relatives to send slices to.

We would like a stacked 2 tier square cake, sponge, a bit of a quirky design, I am wearing black velvet and DP is wearing a purple velvet jacket, so not a traditional wedding.

ANY advice on how, designs that I will be able to manage, how far in advance I could make it etc etc would be wildly appreciated

Quirky is lovely, like the black and silver version of your dress too!

lucysmam · 17/02/2009 12:21

bratnav · 17/02/2009 12:59

Bratnav was at a friends house today who makes cakes, she had a beautiful black and white one
two teirs then like a black candlestick holder holding the top teir, with atopper like urs on top with mr & mr sitting on the edge

But the cakes were all white with black pattern round the sides the black pattern was actually a paper cut out border, it looked fab

The black candlestick looked brilliant, just an idea

Hi bratnav, i love the dresses they are all lovely, its so exciting! really like the topper youve chosen, any more thoughts on the cake?

bratnav · 17/02/2009 20:41

Will have a look out tomorow at the shop for acandlestick thing, thanks Plum.

I am definitely thinking a 2 tier, stacked, squares, top one like a diamond IYSWIM. Deep purple plain icing on both, black velvet ribbon round the bottom of both tiers with the sparkly thing on top.

It was really ornate she had two teirs and then a smaller teir on top, although hers were circles

PlumBumMum · 17/02/2009 20:52

sort of like this

bratnav · 18/02/2009 08:48

hope you find something lovely, I am very envious that all your plans are coming together...mine seem to be taking forever to get off the ground!

Is your mil ok?

bratnav · 18/02/2009 23:11

She is fine, she just got flattened by a UTI (bet she will love me sharing that!)

You think my plans are coming together, you should see the fuss I have caused on AIBU re the meal out!

lucysmam · 19/02/2009 12:38

lol, I'll have a look! possibly tmi about your MIL but never mind

PlumBumMum · 19/02/2009 12:47

oh bratnav are you the one who wants everyone to pay, haven't went on yet, just seen the title

bratnav · 19/02/2009 13:59

That's me plum.

Went to the shop, got the tins to make the sponges this weekend, dowels and cake boards, 2kg of fondant icing and paste to dye it with.

Can anyone offer any advice for the best way to do this?

Thanks

Sorry I have tried the icing bit, so you'll have to wait for lucysmam or maureen to come along

Had a wee look at your other thread, caused a stir there didn't you
tbh I found all our friend gave us money which more than covered the bill, if thats any help
what have you decided?

PlumBumMum · 19/02/2009 16:29

*haven't

lucysmam · 19/02/2009 18:09

the paste for the fondant icing, if you uncover it & use a cocktail stick to add a tiny bit of colour at a time & knead it like you would Play D'oh so that the colour mixes in iyswim?

I found it looks a bit marbley at first but if you keep kneading little amounts into the icing until you get the colour you want, it does even itself out so it's all even

hth. If it doesn't make sense I'll try again tomorrow when I haven't got my bil cooking in my kitchen creating mess

bratnav · 19/02/2009 22:05

Plum - we are going ahead as planned

Lucysmam - thanks for the advice, I was planning to do it on the Wednesday for the wedding on the Friday, would that be ok?

lucysmam · 20/02/2009 09:16

I'm so glad it made sense, wasn't sure as I was trying to make sure my kitchen was in one piece still with my bil cooking in there.

Yeah I would have thought it would keep fine, so long as you keep the cake covered & in a cool place. Don't put it in the fridge though!! The icing will go funny & kind of gooey-sticky

I lol at your other thread btw, definately caused a stir! But good on you for sticking to your plans!

bratnav · 20/02/2009 11:11

Right cakes are in the oven, that was very stressful as I didn't realise there would be quite so much mixture and ended up with bowls all over the place!

All done now though, lets hope it all works out

Oooh and dress has arrived, mmm I tried it on and did indeed feel like a medieval princess

OP posts:
lucysmam · 20/02/2009 14:44

I'm excited for you! Glad the dress fitted nicely

lol@ bowls all over the place, I haven't got a big enough mixing bowl to do my big cake tin mix in so normally have to do them in my big stew pan which provides no end of amusement to my MIL when she's here & I'm baking!

How are the cakes looking?
