Making my own wedding cake-2 tiers please help!

I have decided to make my own wedding cake as we are on a tiny budget. 20-25 guests plus a few elderly relatives to send slices to.

We would like a stacked 2 tier square cake, sponge, a bit of a quirky design, I am wearing black velvet and DP is wearing a purple velvet jacket, so not a traditional wedding.

ANY advice on how, designs that I will be able to manage, how far in advance I could make it etc etc would be wildly appreciated

Have found this on ebay, the seller has said that they will do it with purple & black beads for me, I think this will work well.

looks like you've been busy, bratnav. I think it'll work well in black & purple on the cake you described! Not a bad price either compared to some I have been looking at

It is like wedding planning central round here, I am just waiting for DP to confirm that we can have his friend's restaurant for the reception and I can relax (slightly).

Also need to sort a weekend honeymoon for no money

The cake topper looks really lovely.

I've made the lemon cake from this recipe for a birthday - www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/4578/creating-your-wedding-cake the chocolae one looks good too. WOuld be nice to have both is you are doing two teirs.

lucysmam · 16/02/2009 11:27

Where do you fancy for your honeymoon?

bratnav · 16/02/2009 11:52

I fancy the Maldives, but a cosy country hotel with log fires, nice food, gentle walks etc for a couple of nights would be lovely.

goodnightssleep, I saw that, but thought I would use the sponge recipe on there as that way I know everyone will like it.

have fun I'm back to searching for a cake I like the look of as a starting point for mine

MaureenMLove · 16/02/2009 12:19

We went to France for the day for our honeymoon! We were so skint, we bought one slab of beer and then didn't even have enough money for a cup of coffee on the way back!

We saved for the following year and went to the carribean.

PlumBumMum · 16/02/2009 12:21

Lucysmam I went to Vegas for my honeymoon
i loved vegas

PlumBumMum · 16/02/2009 12:26

So can't wait to see what you come up with
"heres a black white and red one"

lucysmam · 16/02/2009 12:28

Plum, we're going to have to save hard for a honeymoon in Vegas, let alone a wedding so thought a loosely themed vegas wedding would be the ideal in-between as everyone can get dressed up & have some fun. Plus neither of us has seen many of our baby-less mates since having our lo so would be nice to see them as well.

I just don't seem to be having much luck cake wise at the mo

PlumBumMum · 16/02/2009 12:37

Theres a website called charm city cakes, hes also on discovery channel
Theres a cake called thanks bratnav that might be nice in your colour scheme

lucysmam · 16/02/2009 13:02

Cherry Blossoms is very pretty & lovely colours. I like a lot of the very bright coloured ones as well though

bratnav · 16/02/2009 15:22

I'm back, MIL bought dresses, cardis, tights AND shoes (which I was meant to be buying ).

So pleased with them all, also DP has now confirmed the reception venue, who have agreed no room hire charge, free bubbly on arrival for everyone and £15 per head for a 3 course meal (usually £27.50), he is a clever boy

Thanks Plum, will check it out.

Sounds like your budgeting well, you might get to the maldives afterall

bratnav · 16/02/2009 20:17

Sadly not, we only have a long weekend before we get the girls back from our exes.

Snuggly hotel in the country would be fab though
