Vegan party food.

Dp is catering for a friend's 8 year old dd's birthday party in a few weeks. Friend's dd is allergic to dairy and one of the children who has been invited is allergic to nuts.

DP has decided to prepare entirely vegan food as it'll allow both children and any others at the party who might be vegetarian/vegan to eat everything. And it minimises the risks of cross contamination.

He has a few ideas already, but I'd appreciate it if MN could suggest any other items he could make.

The suggestions can be suited to adults or children or both, as there will also be a lot of adults at the party.

TIA.

My dd is allergic to dairy, egg, nuts etc and this is what I do for her when she goes to parties.

ham sandwiches with PURE dairy free spread (or you could make them jam sandwiches)

Jus-roll frozen sausage rolls (they are egg and dairy free)

This Carrot, apple and raisin cake is lovely and I sometimes make it as cupcakes and ice them.

Or you could make THIS Chocolate Brownie recipe as cupcakes.

I hope that helps

Thunderduck · 10/02/2009 17:22

TY. Dp is planning on making individual cupcakes and stacking them, rather than one large cake so these will be perfect.

If they're 8 they're old enough to know what they can and can't eat so there is no real need to stick to vegan food unless it's likely to be particularly popular, imo. Can't he just ask the child what party food she'd like?

CantSleepWontSleep · 10/02/2009 17:29

Hummous and roasted pepper sandwiches went down very well with the grown ups at dd's party at the weekend.

CantSleepWontSleep · 10/02/2009 17:31

As did Delia's low fat moist carrot cake (made with sunflower oil), if you want grown up cake too.

Mercy · 10/02/2009 17:31

A vegan diet often contains nuts!

StirlingTheStrong · 10/02/2009 17:34

FYI hummous has sesame seeds in so if they are allergic to nuts there is a chance they may be allergic to sesame also - I know my dd is

Another idea is chopped up carrots, cucumber and sugar snaps etc

also, at last party I made fruit kebabs (wooden skewers with melon, strawberry, grapes etc threaded on) and they were very popular!

ScummyMummy · 10/02/2009 17:35

I thought that, Mercy! I'm afraid I find a joylessness in the thought of vegan party food, which is probably most unfair.

Thunderduck · 10/02/2009 17:41

The child's mother also suggested exclusively vegan party food. So if she's happy with that I think it's fine, and it'll allow everyone to enjoy, or at least eat it.

DP is a great cook and I'm sure her family will survive one day of vegan food. It won't be all tofu and quorn I'm sure.

It's the birthday girl who is allergic to dairy so I wouldn't expect her mother to want dairy produce at the party.

The only possible exception is that dp makes crab stuffed mushrooms which are gorgeous and our friend is considering making that the one exception as she loves them so much.

Ah- if vegan is what has been ordered then that's a different matter.

Thunderduck · 10/02/2009 17:50

He wouldn't do that to her. It was a mutual decision. She thinks there may be at least one vegetarian child in her dd's class. She's paying for it so if she wanted a whole roast ox he'd do that.

Can I just clarify? vegan means NO animal product at all n'est pas? so whats with the crab, ham, sausage roll suggestions?? or am I losing the plot (very likely - pass the wine dahling..).
I make hummous without sesame seeds and it hasn't killed anyone yet...!

actually reading it again Thunderduck it sounds like crab is the exception - sorry - yep I'm losing the plot....

StirlingTheStrong · 10/02/2009 18:23

I suggested sausage rolls because they are dairy/egg free just in case they wanted to put them out for the meat eaters etc.

Takver · 10/02/2009 19:27

sosmix 'sausage' rolls are very nice
maybe home made hummus without the tahini (hummus generally seems popular with small children IME) with carrot sticks
olives (bizarre, but the children I know are all mad for them
rice crispie / cornflake cakes (the chocolate crunch thingies)
garlic mushrooms (again I find v popular at parties)
garlic bread done with pizza base & olive oil
I wouldn't think vegan party food was odd, much the easiest to have things that everyone can eat.

Cies · 10/02/2009 19:39

Some sort of bread topped with roast peppers.

Sundried tomato paste on crackers or melba toast.

Wedges (potato or sweet potato) with a dipping sauce.

Olives, mini gherkins, pickled onions.

Can you make that tzatziki (sp?) dip with soya yogurt/ soya creme fraiche?

BCLass · 10/02/2009 19:49

Thunderduck - quorn has egg in and so is not vegan.

Thunderduck · 10/02/2009 19:50

Yes, that's why we're avoiding Quorn. Besides it tastes vile.

I'm obviously being thick here but what about the child who is allergic to nuts?

ScummyMummy · 10/02/2009 20:06

I guess it's nut free vegan food, mercy?

CantSleepWontSleep · 10/02/2009 20:07

Ah, I forgot that vegans don't eat eggs. Scrub my delia cake recipe!

Mercy · 10/02/2009 20:16

Yes, I was just commenting on Thunderduck's post of 17.41

Erm, what about carrot/pepper/cucumber sticks with guacamole?

I can do vegetarian any day of the week but vegan and nut free would send me running for the hills.

Which reminds me , can you still get sausagemeat at this time of year? ds wants sausagerolls for his birthday party

[apologies for the carnivore intrusion]

Clure · 10/02/2009 20:20

falafel
guacamole
houmous dips
home made pizza without cheese (xtra veggies)

lots of soya products out there (soya ice-cream, soya cream fruit makes a knickerbocker glory)

plain soya yog - make tzaziki/dips

Thunderduck · 10/02/2009 20:21

All food will be nut free. Dp is obsessively checking labels on all produce we buy for this purpose, checking for traces of dairy and nuts.

He's also purchased new utensils to use for this and removing and clearing our kitchen of all nut produce a week or so before the party, and giving all surfaces a thorough clean.
A little OTT I think but he does tend to do things to excess. Still at least we know there'll be no nut contamination.

Sounds like you and DP have got everything under control - well done - I bow to your experience and superior knowledge . Enjoy the party !

ilovemydogandMrObama · 10/02/2009 21:13

non dairy cheese falafels?
tortilla chips with salsa
veggie tacos (fill your own - and have bowls of stuff)

Or what about doing a 'theme' - mexican may be the easiest as far as food; have games like pin the tail on the donkey, silly hats, 'virgin' margaritas, cocktails etc
