Vegan party food.

Dp is catering for a friend's 8 year old dd's birthday party in a few weeks. Friend's dd is allergic to dairy and one of the children who has been invited is allergic to nuts.

DP has decided to prepare entirely vegan food as it'll allow both children and any others at the party who might be vegetarian/vegan to eat everything. And it minimises the risks of cross contamination.

He has a few ideas already, but I'd appreciate it if MN could suggest any other items he could make.

The suggestions can be suited to adults or children or both, as there will also be a lot of adults at the party.

TIA.

A theme sounds fun. We'll suggest that. He was thinking of making about half of the dishes Indian cuisine as it's easy to make it vegan. no ghee of course.
But Mexican would also go down very well.

We are vegan and there is loads of lovely things you can make that are far from joyless

Word of warning although sosmix is vegan, many similar packet mixes are not so be careful if you think about going down that line.

I would suggest

Sandwiches - marmite, cucumber, avocado
Dips and veg - gucamole, hummus (homemade minus tahini), roasted red pepper with silken tofu (v yummy, made with garlic, olive oil all blended together)
Falafel with a garlicy soya yogurt dip
Filo parcels/rolls stuffed with a mixture of spinach, bulgar wheat, raisins, garlic, etc..
no-sausage rolls (frozen puff pastry is vegan and you could make a sausage mix up or use veggie sausages such as Linda McCartney)
Popcorn and crisps
Fresh fruit dipped in dark chocolate
rice crispy cakes (made with plain chocolate again)
birthday cake

is dark chocolate 100% vegan? Thought there were some milk solids in them?

If not, then what about a chocolate fountain!

Klio · 10/02/2009 22:16

Most dark chocolate is, especially if it is good quality stuff like Lindt or Green and Blacks. I don't think I'd survive otherwise

Also if you want to check up on something being vegan there is a good website www.isitvegan.com that has a database of brands and products that are vegan friendly

Klio - G&B have changed their recipe lately and do list milk as an ingredient now.

'Divine' dark choc is milk free though, and as the name suggests .

Klio · 11/02/2009 14:03

That's interesting CSWS I was aware that G&B had to admit to "may contain milk traces" ever since they were bought by Cadburys as their chocolates were being made alongside products containing milk. I didn't know that they have since actually changed their recipe to contain milk solids, I'll have to look into this further

Beware though that Divine dark fruit & nut is not milk free - DH is allergic to dairy and can eat their dark choc but not the fruit & nut, it has butter fat in it.

most recipes that use eggs can be converted for vegans. check www.vegweb.com for egg substitute ideas - i often use the arrowroot/soy flour and water sub.
"Vegan cupcakes rule the world" is a classic for yummy party cakes. I also do vegan sausage rolls, vegan pizza's with melting cheezly, garlic bread (not using butter but marg). as well as cooking for myself (i'm vegan) i also cater regularly for a vegan with nut allergy (she's now a healthy 16 year old) and its not too difficult once you get into the swing of it
